When Lin Feng woke up, it was already ten in the morning. There was no helping it; last night had been exhausting with all the chaos and capturing Wolf Gang. It was impossible to say it didn't take a toll on him, and since Lin Feng had nothing planned for the morning, sleeping in a bit didn't matter.
After getting up and washing up, Lin Feng went downstairs.
Downstairs, Dong Jie had already opened for business and had been working for a while. When she saw Lin Feng come down, she pulled him into the kitchen at the back, pointed at the food on the table, and said to him, "Lin Feng, I just heated everything up again. Perfect timing! You’re awake now, come on, try my cooking." With that, she pushed Lin Feng into a chair by the table, almost as if she wanted to feed him herself.
Seeing Dong Jie act this way made Lin Feng feel a bit awkward. Looking at the breakfast spread that could serve nearly ten people, he was somewhat puzzled.
Before Lin Feng could wrap his head around it, Dong Jie had already served him a bowl of soy milk, blew on it to cool it down a bit, and brought it right to his lips.
Though he wasn't used to this treatment, Lin Feng cooperatively drank the bowl of soy milk. It was warm but not hot; having a bowl upon waking felt refreshing.
Watching Lin Feng drink the soy milk so cooperatively made Dong Jie smile even brighter, filling her with an inexplicable sense of satisfaction.
After all, everything on the table was prepared by Dong Jie specifically for Lin Feng that morning.
Since he couldn't quite understand what was going on, Lin Feng decided not to deny his stomach. After finishing the soy milk, he started munching on the youtiao (fried dough sticks) and other snacks on the table. He figured that since he couldn't finish everything anyway, taking a few bites of each would be better than wasting food.
As he ate heartily, Dong Jie found a seat nearby and sat down. Her gaze never left Lin Feng's face. The look in her eyes was reminiscent of how she used to look at her younger brother but also held some other meaning.
As for what that meaning was—well, that's for you to interpret.
Once he finished his breakfast, Lin Feng looked up at the still-smiling Dong Jie. He waved his hand in front of her and joked, "Sister Jie, have you gone crazy?"
"Shut up! Now that you're full, clean this place up," Dong Jie said playfully. Lin Feng's blunt comment interrupted her thoughts and naturally put her in a slightly bad mood; however, she only lightly scolded him. Her tone sounded more like playful teasing between lovers.
Lin Feng scratched his head in confusion. How did things change overnight? Nevertheless, he obediently began to clean up the dishes. After all, she had just prepared breakfast for him; it would be inconsiderate to eat and then leave without helping out.
"Fool!" Dong Jie silently cursed Lin Feng as she saw him tidying up the dishes, then went to the front of the store to attend to the business.
After finishing everything, Lin Feng also came out from the kitchen and approached Dong Jie, who was sitting at the counter.
"Jie, is there anything I can help you with?" Lin Feng asked Dong Jie.
"No, the goods were unloaded yesterday, and there's not much to do today. As long as I'm here, everything will be fine. If you have something to take care of, go ahead," Dong Jie replied as she noticed Lin Feng coming over and adjusted his clothes.
"Okay, then Jie, I'm going out for a bit." Lin Feng was already used to Dong Jie adjusting his clothes; he just felt that today she seemed a bit different, though he couldn't pinpoint exactly how.
In fact, after the events of the past few days, Dong Jie felt that Lin Feng was no longer the little brother he used to be. This kid had grown up and could now stand in front of her to protect her. This feeling was wonderful; it was exactly what Dong Jie had been looking for. So, she slept soundly last night and when she woke up this morning and saw Lin Feng sleeping peacefully, she couldn't help but steal a kiss on his cheek.
"Alright, go ahead. By the way, Lin Feng, here’s something for you. At your age, it's inconvenient not to have a phone for contact," Dong Jie called out to Lin Feng just as he was about to leave the store and handed him a mobile phone.
"Did you buy this yesterday, Jie?" Lin Feng asked as he took it.
"Yes! Our Lin Feng has grown up and even helped his sister collect protection money from Wolf Gang. So I bought you a phone as a reward. How about that? Isn’t Jie good to you?" Dong Jie said with a smile, her tone finally returning to its usual self.
Looking at the Nokia phone in his hand, Lin Feng thought it was about time he had one too. After all, now that he was in charge of Wolf Gang, there were some things that needed communication.
Lin Feng didn't have many requirements for a phone; being able to make calls and receive texts was enough. In his previous life, he had seen what smartphones could do—amazing devices that had nearly all the functions of a computer.
"Thanks, Jie." Since Dong Jie gave him a phone, Lin Feng accepted it without hesitation; he didn't feel the need to be overly polite with this lovely lady.
"Why are you thanking me? Alright, hurry along now," Dong Jie waved her hand at Lin Feng and continued with her work.
Nodding, Lin Feng left the Self-Service Store.
What he didn’t notice was that as he turned to leave, Dong Jie looked up again, watching his back thoughtfully with a smile on her lips.
Walking down the road, Lin Feng fiddled with his new phone, saved Li Zhong's number into it, and sent him a text message with his own number before deciding to check on those guys in the dormitory.
Lin Feng had not slept in the dormitory for two nights, and he wondered where that group of people would let their rich imaginations take them this time. With that thought, a smile appeared on Lin Feng's face.
"Lin Feng..." A screech of brakes interrupted Lin Feng's thoughts. Accompanying it was a clear female voice calling his name.
Looking towards the source of the voice, Lin Feng saw two cars appearing beside him, one behind the other.
A BMW was in the back, and a Bora was in front. It was the owner of the Bora who was calling out to Lin Feng.
He recognized her; it was Su Xue.
What was she doing here? Lin Feng felt a bit puzzled.
Seeing that she had no intention of getting out of the car, Lin Feng walked over to the other side of the Bora, opened the door, and got in, taking a seat in the passenger seat.
After all, she had just helped him at the police station; Lin Feng felt he should show some appreciation.
Su Xue was quite pleased with Lin Feng's actions. It seemed that the saying about being soft on those who help you held some truth. Even this stubborn guy, Lin Feng, had shown some tact today.
Isn't that why human relationships can be exhausting?
"Lin Feng, you slipped away pretty quickly that night. What’s this? Burning bridges after crossing them?" Su Xue teased with a smile.
"Where? I had something urgent come up. Thank you and Ouyang Teacher for that night; I was planning to treat you both to dinner sometime to express my gratitude!" Lin Feng could only explain with a smile at this moment; he really did have something to attend to. Moreover, he felt genuinely touched by Su Xue and Ouyang Qian's timely arrival that evening.
"Well, at least you have a conscience! Forget about treating us to dinner; there's something I need your help with right now. What do you say?" Su Xue was very satisfied with Lin Feng's response and directly put forth her request.
So soon? He really had to repay her kindness. Although Lin Feng was somewhat prepared for this, he was still surprised by how direct she was.
Seeing that Lin Feng remained silent, Su Xue also kept quiet, simply watching him to see how he would respond.
"Alright, go ahead. What do you need?" After pondering for a moment, Lin Feng realized this was inevitable; it would be better to resolve it sooner rather than later.
"Why do you have to be so realistic? We're friends, right? Can't you just help me out a bit? I don't mean to make you feel like you owe me!" Su Xue said, noticing Lin Feng's serious demeanor. She really didn't intend to use that night as leverage to get Lin Feng to help her.
Hearing Su Xue say this, Lin Feng relaxed. Indeed, it was true that Su Xue had arrived just in time that night; perhaps it was really the kind of mutual assistance friends provide for each other.
Since the girl was willing to lend a helping hand, Lin Feng felt he shouldn't be petty about it. It was just a small favor, after all.
"Hehe... So, Miss Su, what exactly is this favor? I hope I'm not going to end up being sold out while counting your money," Lin Feng said, his tone much lighter now that the atmosphere had eased.
"What else could it be? It's about pretending to be my boyfriend. Chen Zisheng asked me out today, and my family insists I go, so I came to find you. You have to take responsibility for this," Su Xue explained directly, adding a hint of intrigue.
"Alright then, I'll accompany you. I guarantee that Chen Zisheng will think twice about approaching you. Don't worry; if all else fails, I'll take care of him," Lin Feng joked with a smile. Since he had nothing else to do, helping out seemed fine.
"Hehe... Now that's more like it. Let's go," Su Xue said as she started the Bora.
The BMW behind them also started up; it was naturally Chen Xinni inside. She had just been upset by Lin Feng the day before and certainly wasn't going to greet him now.
Lin Feng didn't have any intention of forcing a greeting either.
And so, the three of them set off in two cars.
