The Seven School Joint Examination is a significant event in our city. Every school takes it seriously, as it is a competition among students and a subtle rivalry between schools. My examination venue is set at Five Middle School.
As I entered the examination room, the proctor cast a concerned glance my way. I smiled lightly at him and then took my seat. Soon, the exam began. The questions were very simple, as easy for me as eating and drinking. I wrote furiously and finished in just half an hour.
Just as I took a few steps, the proctor called out to me. "Wait a moment." I stopped, turned around to look at him. "What’s wrong?"
The proctor looked at me and asked, "Aren't you going to check your answers again?" I smiled at him and replied, "No need."
The proctor continued, "Why not?" I looked at him and said, "Because I've already checked."
"When did you check?" he asked.
"Just now," I answered.
"Just now?"
I nodded and replied, "Yes."
"After checking just now, why didn't you submit your paper?"
"Because I hadn't finished writing yet."
"Have you finished now?"
I nodded again and said, "I have finished."
"Are you sure?"
"I'm sure."
"Alright, you can go."
I looked at him and smiled, "Okay."
I turned and walked towards the door.
After taking a few steps, he called me again.
"Wait a moment."
I couldn't hold back any longer and turned to glare at him.
"What now?"
The proctor looked at me and asked, "Where is your Test Paper?"
"It's right here."
Saying this, I handed him the Test Paper.
The proctor took the Test Paper, glanced at it, and looked shocked.
"What happened?"
"Why is your Test Paper blank?"
I looked at him and smiled, "Because I didn't want to write."
"Then why didn't you want to write?"
"Because I forgot."
"Then why aren't you writing now?"
"Because I've already submitted it."
The proctor stared at me without saying a word.
He then asked, "Are you sure you submitted a blank paper?"
I nodded and replied, "Yes."
The proctor looked at me and said, "Alright, you can go."
I turned and walked towards the door.
This time, he finally didn't call me back.
Two days later, the Joint Examination Results were released, shocking the entire school.
When classmates checked their scores, they were surprised to find my name was not among the top one hundred in the grade.
"What’s going on? Isn't the first place Jiang Ming?"
"Yeah, why can't we find Jiang Ming's name?"
"Where did Jiang Ming go?"
The classmates were discussing among themselves, unsure of what was happening.
Finally, the student who had consistently ranked last exclaimed, "Why am I not at the bottom of the rankings?"
The classmates were taken aback, then quickly realized.
"Jiang Ming can’t be at the bottom, right?"
"That’s very likely; otherwise, how could we not find her?"
"But she was first in the last monthly exam, wasn’t she?"
"Yeah, and she was also first in the preliminary test."
"So what’s going on?"
"I don’t know."
In the office.
Principal threw a stack of answer sheets in front of me, visibly upset.
"Jiang Ming, what’s going on?"
I looked at him with an indifferent expression.
"What do you mean by 'what's going on'?"
Principal stared at me and said, "These answer sheets are all yours, right?"
I nodded and replied, "Yes, they are mine."
"You submitted blank sheets?"
"Is that a problem?"
"Why?"
I looked at him and countered, "What do you mean by 'why'?"
"Why did you submit blank sheets?"
I smiled and said, "Principal, asking that makes it sound like submitting blank sheets is a serious crime."
"You submitted a blank exam, and that was indeed a big mistake."
"What mistake did I make?"
"You embarrassed our school in the Seven School Joint Examination."
"What does that have to do with me?"
"Of course it has something to do with you."
"What connection is there?"
"Because of your blank exam, none of our students made it into the top ten in the city."
"So what?"
"What did you say?"
"I can no longer be guaranteed admission; how many points I score is my business. Even if I submit a blank exam, I don't mind."
The Principal looked at me and said, "Jiang Ming, do you know what you're saying?"
"I know."
"Don't you think you're being unreasonable?"
"I don't think I'm being unreasonable."
"You submitted a blank exam and still don't realize your mistake."
"My mistake is not submitting a blank exam."
"What is it then?"
"My mistake is not following the school's arrangements."
"What do you mean?"
"My mistake is being forced to give up my guaranteed admission spot."
"Jiang Ming, don't go too far."
"Principal, that statement should be directed at you."
"What do you mean?"
"You said that guaranteed admission spots are not only based on grades but also on overall quality. Yet you didn't even look at me before giving my spot to someone else. Aren't you being a bit unreasonable?"
The Principal looked at me and remained silent.
