My sister is sick; she is lying in bed. 0
She said, "I'm going to die." 0
I held her and shook her gently. 0
I shouted, "Sister! Sister!" 0
My sister opened her eyes and looked at me. 0
She touched my face and said, "Zhao Di, Xiao Sanzi tricked Gousheng." 0
I looked at my sister and replied, "I understand." 0
I walked out of the courtyard and closed the gate behind me. 0
I searched everywhere for three days, but I couldn't find Xiao Sanzi. 0
On the fourth day, I saw a group of beggars in a dilapidated courtyard. 0
They were gathered around a corpse, dividing the flesh of that body. 0
It was Xiao Sanzi; he couldn't call out or move. 0
The beggars were grabbing at Xiao Sanzi's flesh, chewing on it and licking his blood. 0
I ran out of the broken courtyard and onto the street. 0
I crouched down and cried loudly. 0
As night fell, my sister pulled me back home. 0
She closed the courtyard gate behind us. 0
She held me close and patted my back. 0
General Wang led his troops to seize supplies from the enemy, bringing life-saving grain to New City. 0
Large pots were set up on the streets, and thin porridge saved many lives. 0
The soldiers were dark and thin, yet they were very talkative. 0
They spoke highly of General Wang, praising him endlessly. 0
They said General Wang was a friend of national heroes; like them, he cared for the vulnerable. 0
They said General Wang was righteous; like a hero, he was a good person. 0
My sister stood nearby, listening to what the soldiers had to say. 0

My sister's lips curled into a smile. We received our rations; although not much, it would last us a while longer. Having regained some strength, my sister and I sat in front of Gousheng's grave. We were knitting gloves together. My sister asked me, "What is a hero like?" I replied, "Very tall." She said, "A hero stands tall even when they die." Looking at me, she continued, "A hero is a great hero who stands firm." With her head lowered, she focused on knitting the gloves. She didn't cry; she was very gentle. 0

We gave the gloves to the soldiers who brought us food. They were immensely grateful and reluctant to wear them. Instead, they hung the gloves around their necks while still wearing their tattered cotton gloves. They looked at us and saluted. Tears streamed down their faces as they gazed at us. 0

General Wang sent more food supplies, and life gradually returned to the city. People began to dream of the war ending and returning home to live well. I also fantasized about opening a tofu shop in the future. However, enemies approached. Panic ensued as people shouted, "The enemy is here!" My sister and I joined the crowd rushing out of the city to help, screaming as we ran back inside. 0

The city guards were caught off guard; several soldiers were killed, and the city gates were breached by the enemy. The attackers came fiercely and in large numbers. People screamed and scattered in all directions. A child fell to the ground while his mother froze in place. The enemy's wheels rolled over the child, sending him flying away. His mother stretched out her arms, standing there watching her child, unable to make a sound. 0

She looked at the child, kneeling on the ground. 0
The enemy had arrived, and people fled into the courtyard. 0
I grabbed my sister and ran into the alley. 0
Pushing open the courtyard door, I pulled my sister inside to hide. 0
I closed the door and took my sister into the cupboard to hide. 0
Gangsters came in, armed with guns, kicking open the courtyard door. 0
My sister and I hid in the cupboard, holding each other tightly, afraid to make a sound. 0
Two gangsters barged in, starting to rummage through things, turning everything upside down. 0
They discovered my cupboard and opened the door. 0
I swung a pair of scissors, lunging at the gangster. 0
The gangster grabbed my hand and took away the scissors. 0
They tied up my sister and me. 0
They dragged me to the living room and pushed me to the ground. 0
I lifted my head and looked at the gangsters. 0
They looked at me and laughed. 0
"This little girl is quite tough." 0
"Just wondering if she might be worth something." 0
They stared at me, discussing a price. 0
"Can this girl be worth five thousand?" 0
"Not likely." 0
"This girl is thin; she won't fetch a good price." 0
"That one over there is fat; she's worth something." 0
They continued to discuss while looking at my sister and me. 0
