A few days later, Ming Yue was reviewing memorials in his study when he suddenly heard a melodious flute sound coming from outside the window.
The flute was clear and beautiful, yet carried a hint of mischief, as if it were deliberately teasing his senses.
Ming Yue set down the memorial he was holding, stood up, and walked to the window, looking in the direction from which the flute sound originated.
Not far away, under a Peach Blossom Tree, a woman dressed in a pink dress stood with her back to him, engrossed in playing a bamboo flute.
The woman had a slender figure, and her long black hair was casually tied with a pink ribbon, gently swaying in the breeze, highlighting her snow-like skin and ethereal demeanor.
Ming Yue recognized her at a glance; it was Li Rong.
A smile unconsciously crept onto his lips; it seemed she was ready for a "direct confrontation."
With that thought in mind, Ming Yue stepped towards Li Rong.
---
Li Rong stood under the Peach Blossom Tree in her pink dress, with her back to Ming Yue. Her delicate fingers moved gracefully as the flute sounded at times crisp and lively like a mountain stream, at times melodious and lingering like an orchid in a secluded valley, and occasionally mixed with playful tremors that starkly contrasted with her usual dignified Supreme Deity image, resembling more the quirky A Li from years ago.
Ming Yue stood not far behind Li Rong with his hands clasped behind his back, quietly listening to the flute. A subtle smile flickered in his deep-set eyes. The music seemed to pull him back hundreds of years to that brief yet beautiful memory of the mortal realm.
As the piece concluded, Li Rong slowly lowered her Jade Flute and turned to face Ming Yue, a meaningful smile playing on her lips. "What does the Young Emperor think of my flute playing?"
Ming Yue's gaze flickered slightly as he approached nonchalantly. "The Supreme Deity's flute skills are naturally excellent."
Li Rong let out a light laugh, her tone carrying a hint of provocation. "Oh? I wonder how it compares to that 'A Li' from back then?"
Ming Yue raised an eyebrow, meeting Li Rong's gaze, which seemed to hold a smile yet was inscrutable. She realized that Li Rong indeed remembered the events of that time.
"I was young back then, and many things have faded from my memory," Ming Yue replied calmly, her voice betraying no emotion. "However, the sound of your flute reminds me of an old friend. The pieces she played were just as lively and unique as yours."
"Is that so?" Li Rong feigned surprise, covering her mouth with a light laugh. "It seems this old friend must hold a very special place in the Young Emperor's heart."
Ming Yue did not confirm or deny, simply gazing at Li Rong quietly. Her deep eyes seemed to conceal countless words, yet they remained elusive.
Li Rong felt a twinge of unease under her scrutiny but maintained her composure as she met Ming Yue's gaze. She pondered whether he was testing her or if he truly remembered something.
Watching from the side, Qin Ze noticed the subtle tension between the two and couldn't help but feel anxious for Li Rong. He quietly moved behind her and lowered his voice to remind her, "Supreme Deity, take it easy; don't push too far."
Li Rong gave him a reassuring glance and continued to engage with Ming Yue.
"May I ask who this old friend is, Young Emperor? Perhaps I know her as well?" Li Rong inquired tentatively.
Ming Yue responded with a question of his own: "Supreme Deity, do you still remember if you encountered any interesting people or events during your time in the mortal realm?"
Li Rong's heart skipped a beat, though she kept her expression neutral. "The matters of the mortal realm are now hundreds of years in the past; I've forgotten them completely. Yet you, Young Emperor, seem to be quite fixated on those events."
"Perhaps," Ming Yue said meaningfully as he glanced at her. "Some things and some people remain etched in our memories, even after a long time has passed."
With that, Ming Yue turned and walked away, leaving Li Rong and Qin Ze standing there, exchanging puzzled looks.
Li Rong watched Ming Yue's departing figure, feeling a mix of emotions. She knew that Ming Yue was trying to set a trap for her, and it was up to her to see how she would respond.
"What should we do now, Supreme Deity?" Qin Ze asked anxiously.
"What are you afraid of? When the soldiers come, we will meet them; when the water comes, we will cover it with earth," Li Rong said lightly, patting Qin Ze on the shoulder. "Come on, let's go back."
With that, Li Rong led Qin Ze out of the Imperial Garden.
---
As Li Rong turned to leave with Qin Ze, she was called back by Ming Yue. "Supreme Deity, please wait."
Li Rong paused, silently cursing in her heart but maintaining a calm facade. She turned and smiled, "What advice do you have, Young Emperor?"
Ming Yue walked slowly in front of Li Rong, his gaze falling on a jade pendant hanging at her waist. It was intricately carved and radiated a warm luster, clearly not an ordinary item.
Following his gaze to her waist, Li Rong's heart sank. This pendant was something she had impulsively "borrowed" from Ming Yue during their time in the mortal realm. After returning to the celestial realm, she had kept it with her and had completely forgotten about it.
Noticing her change in expression, Ming Yue's lips curled into a knowing smile. "Supreme Deity, do you still remember where this jade pendant came from?"
Feigning calmness, Li Rong held the pendant tightly in her hand, her eyes flickering. "This pendant was given to me by an old friend. Why? Have you seen it before, Young Emperor?"
"Oh? Is that so?" Ming Yue replied casually but with an undeniable certainty in his tone. "I recall meeting an interesting young girl during our time in the mortal realm; she also had an identical jade pendant."
He paused, his gaze fixed on Li Rong, and slowly said, "That little girl was quite mischievous, always dressed in pink, especially fond of playing pranks. I remember one time..."
He deliberately stopped, observing the change in Li Rong's expression.
Li Rong felt a chill run down her spine under his gaze but could only feign calmness as she listened, quickly recalling what kind of "pranks" she had played during her time in the mortal realm.
"I remember one time, that little girl took my jade pendant when I wasn't paying attention and left a note saying I had to buy her candied hawthorn to get it back," Ming Yue said, a hint of a smile appearing at the corner of his mouth as if reminiscing about something very amusing.
"And then?" Li Rong couldn't help but ask, secretly lamenting how Ming Yue still held onto grudges even now.
"And then?" Ming Yue raised an eyebrow. "Then I really went and bought her candied hawthorn and promised her that I wouldn't get angry so easily in the future."
Li Rong's heart skipped a beat; this childhood trinket was known only to her and Ming Yue. Could it be... he really recognized her?
"Supreme Deity, what's wrong?" Ming Yue asked with concern when he saw Li Rong's pale face.
Li Rong took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down, and forced a smile. "It's nothing; I just suddenly remembered some past events."
"Oh?" Ming Yue's eyes flickered slightly as he casually asked, "What did Supreme Deity remember?"
Li Rong avoided his gaze, gripping the jade pendant tightly in her hand, her mind in chaos as she wondered how she could evade this situation.
Seeing that she didn't answer, Ming Yue didn't press further but simply watched her quietly, his eyes carrying a hint of subtle tenderness.
