I took out my phone and was immediately stunned.
It was Li Jing.
"Why is she calling me?"
I muttered in confusion before answering the call.
"Hello?"
I asked tentatively.
"It's me," came Li Jing's voice from the other end.
"What are you doing?" she asked.
"I just got off work," I replied.
"And you?" I inquired.
Li Jing spoke softly, "Something happened at home."
"Something happened?"
I was taken aback and quickly asked, "What happened?"
"What’s going on?" I pressed further.
Li Jing hesitated for a moment and then said quietly, "My family is all dead."
"All dead?"
I was shocked and nearly fell off my chair.
"You... what did you say?"
I trembled as I asked, "What exactly is going on?"
Li Jing opened her mouth, seemingly unsure of how to respond.
"What's happening?" I pressed urgently.
In a low voice, Li Jing said, "Let me send you a video."
"A video?" I was taken aback for a moment.
"Yes," she replied and hung up the phone.
Moments later, she sent me a surveillance video.
I opened the video with confusion and discovered it featured old man Li.
I watched as he sneaked up to the neighbor's door, reached into their flower pot, and plucked a few leaves, placing them into a plastic bag.
"What is this..." I frowned and continued watching.
old man Li returned home with the plastic bag. He took the leaves out, placed them on the table, then pulled out some flour and began to knead the dough.
After kneading, he chopped the leaves into small pieces, mixed them with the meat filling, and wrapped them into dumplings.
What was old man Li doing? Was he stealing his neighbor's leaves to eat like chives?
The video recorded for a full forty minutes until old man Li finished cooking the dumplings and brought them to the table.
He called his wife and son over to eat the dumplings, and they all seemed to enjoy them immensely.
However, after eating less than ten dumplings, all three suddenly screamed in agony, clutching their stomachs and collapsing to the ground, convulsing uncontrollably.
I stared at the video, feeling increasingly anxious.
In the footage, old man Li and his family struggled on the ground for a moment before they stopped moving altogether.
Half an hour later, several doctors hurriedly arrived. After examining the situation, they shook their heads and turned to leave.
" old man Li's three family members are all dead."
"What happened?" I took out my phone and called Li Jing.
"I don't know," Li Jing said softly. "They were already dead when I got back."
I felt a heaviness in my heart. old man Li was dead, along with his son and wife; this should have been good news for me. But why couldn't I feel happy about it?
I sighed, turned off my computer, and walked out of the office.
This incident caused a stir in the village, with everyone saying that old man Li was a toxic husband who even poisoned his own son and wife. It was said that he was the stingiest person in the village, never willing to spend even a penny.
This New Year, he wanted to save some money, so he secretly sneaked into his neighbor's house and stole their daffodil leaves. He thought they were chives, and after bringing them home, he chopped them up and mixed them into dumpling filling. As a result, his son and wife ate the most and were poisoned the deepest, dying on the spot.
old man Li was older and ate less, so he didn't die immediately but couldn't hold on the next day either. Unable to bear the village's gossip and the death of his son, he ultimately chose to take his own life.
Of course, all of this was what I heard from Li Jing; I wasn't sure of the exact truth.
"By the way," Li Jing looked at me and said, "didn't you ask me what we should do next last time?"
