Zhou Ziqi leaned weakly against the wall, slowly sliding down until he sat on the ground, covering his face with his hands as tears silently slipped through his fingers. The wind on the hospital rooftop was strong, causing his clothes to flutter, yet it could not disperse the pain and confusion weighing heavily on his heart. He thought of Gu Yu's clear smile and the warm moments they shared, feeling as if an invisible hand was tightly gripping his heart, suffocating him with pain. Why did fate have to play such tricks on him? Why did he have to fall in love with someone he could not love?
"Ziqi? What are you doing here?"
A familiar voice came from behind him. Zhou Ziqi abruptly looked up to see Gu Yu standing at the door, a hint of concern on her face. He hurriedly tried to stand up but nearly fell due to his numb legs; fortunately, Gu Yu quickly reached out to support him.
"Are you okay?" Gu Yu asked with genuine concern.
"I'm fine, I'm fine." Zhou Ziqi avoided Gu Yu's gaze, lowering his head to straighten his disheveled clothes, trying to conceal his panic and guilt.
"Why are you sitting on the ground? It's windy here; you'll catch a cold." Gu Yu said as she draped her jacket over Zhou Ziqi's shoulders.
Zhou Ziqi's body stiffened slightly as a faint fragrance wafted into his nose; it was Gu Yu's scent. He looked up at her, feeling a mix of emotions. How he wished he could tell Gu Yu how he felt, how he wanted to hold her in his arms and tell her that he would do anything for her. But he couldn't; he couldn't betray his brother or hurt Gu Yu.
"I... I just came up for some fresh air," Zhou Ziqi said, lowering his head with a somewhat hoarse voice.
"Ziran woke up and is asking to see you," Gu Yu said softly, not noticing Zhou Ziqi's unusual demeanor.
"Okay, I'll go down right away." Zhou Ziqi took a deep breath, suppressing all his emotions deep inside as he stood up and followed Gu Yu down from the rooftop.
In the hospital room, Zhou Ziran leaned against the headboard, pale but unable to hide the urgency in his eyes. When he saw Gu Yu and Zhou Ziqi enter, he struggled to sit up but was gently pressed back down by Gu Yu.
"Don't move around; the doctor said you need to rest," Gu Yu said gently, though there was a subtle hint of distance in her tone.
"Ziran, how are you feeling?" Zhou Ziqi asked with concern as she approached the bedside.
"I'm okay," Zhou Ziran replied, glancing at Gu Yu, hesitating to say more.
"Ziran, there's something I want to tell you," Gu Yu said, taking a deep breath and gathering her courage.
Zhou Ziran looked at Gu Yu, a complex emotion flashing in his eyes. He nodded, "Go ahead."
"You got hurt because you were trying to save me..." Gu Yu's voice trembled, her eyes slightly reddening.
Zhou Ziran's heart sank suddenly. He opened his mouth to explain but found himself at a loss for words.
Gu Yu's tears finally fell uncontrollably. "Do you know that what you did makes me feel even more guilty and in pain?"
Seeing Gu Yu's tear-streaked face felt like a knife to Zhou Ziran's heart. He wanted to reach out and wipe her tears away but ultimately let his hand fall helplessly.
"I'm sorry, Yu'er, I shouldn't have..."
"No, you did nothing wrong; I am the one at fault." Gu Yu interrupted Zhou Ziran firmly. "I shouldn't have come into your life and brought you so much trouble. I've made up my mind; I'm leaving here, leaving you."
"Leaving?" Zhou Ziran's head shot up, shock and panic filling his eyes. "Where are you going? Why?"
"I'm going to a place without you, to start over," Gu Yu said before turning and walking out of the hospital room.
"Yu'er!" Zhou Ziran desperately tried to get out of bed to chase Gu Yu, but due to his weak condition, he fell back onto the bed again. He looked at Gu Yu's resolute figure, his heart aching as if it were being twisted. He wanted to call out to her, to tell her that he couldn't live without her. However, the words caught in his throat turned into a silent sigh.
Zhou Ziqi watched this scene with mixed emotions. He walked over to Zhou Ziran and gently patted his shoulder. "Brother, let her go. Maybe it's better for her this way."
Zhou Ziran suddenly opened his eyes, filled with pain and struggle. "No, I can't let her go. I can't live without her..."
"Brother," Zhou Ziqi interrupted Zhou Ziran's words, his tone somber, "in your current state, how can you take care of her? Have you thought about how she would feel if she stayed and saw you like this?"
Zhou Ziran fell silent. He knew Zhou Ziqi was right; in his current condition, he would only become a burden to Gu Yu. But how could he bear to watch Gu Yu leave?
The hospital room fell into a dead silence, with only Zhou Ziran's labored breathing and the occasional sound of car horns from outside the window.
After leaving the hospital, Gu Yu wandered aimlessly down the street, replaying moments spent with Zhou Ziran in her mind. His tenderness, his dominance, his smile, his tears—each scene flashed before her eyes like a movie.
She knew that Zhou Ziran loved her, but this love felt heavy and suffocating. She couldn't face the fact that Zhou Ziran was hurt because of her, nor could she confront the unspoken feelings deep within her heart.
She needed time and space to sort out her thoughts and find the true answer.
In the following days, Zhou Ziran, disregarding the doctor's advice, insisted on going to Gu Yu's school and residence every day in search of her, but he never found any trace of her.
He became silent and withdrawn, locking himself in his room all day, refusing to eat or drink, and not sleeping, as if he had lost his soul.
Zhou Ziqi watched helplessly, anxious and worried. He knew that only Gu Yu could unlock Zhou Ziran's heart, but how could he know where Gu Yu was now?
Meanwhile, Lin Wei became the target of scorn at school due to the rumors she spread. Classmates pointed fingers at her and whispered among themselves; even the boys who used to surround her now avoided her.
Wherever she went, she could feel the unusual gazes of others, like sharp thorns piercing her self-esteem. She could not bear such pressure, nor could she face the guilt and regret within herself.
Ultimately, she chose to escape, to leave this place that had left her so scarred.
Everything seemed to return to square one; Zhou Ziran and Zhou Ziqi went back to their original lives, but both were left with an unhealable scar in their hearts.
Gu Yu's departure and Lin Wei's leaving felt like a storm that swept through their lives, leaving devastation in its wake.
In the days to come, they would each lick their wounds and reevaluate their feelings and lives.
