The teacher didn't ask how Jia Xu met Guo Jia, only saying that Guo Jia is not a bad-hearted child, but her grades are indeed your biggest competitor. Suddenly, Guo Jia's image in her mind changed from a seemingly unemployed trendy girl to a genius who doesn't need to attend classes and still excels. Jia Xu found it difficult to connect these two words with Guo Jia, yet felt that Guo Jia should be the shining one. So when Jia Xu saw Guo Jia at the competition venue, she wasn't surprised. That day, Guo Jia was wearing a snow-white shirt, with the sleeves rolled up to her elbows, fanning herself with a notebook in her hand. She smiled at Jia Xu from a distance through the crowd, but didn't leave the team to approach her. Jia Xu thought, it turns out they became competitors so quickly.
This year, the rule unexpectedly underwent a major change, catching all the team leaders off guard. After the rule was announced, the venue almost descended into chaos. Jia Xu was sitting in a corner when suddenly she felt something cold touch her leg. Looking down, she saw Guo Jia with disheveled hair, who had apparently crawled over from some corner.
Jia Xu widened her eyes in surprise, but Guo Jia just chuckled. She took Jia Xu's hand with her cold one and said, "I choose you."
True to her words, Guo Jia pushed through the crowd that had surrounded her during the team formation, and very formally extended her hand to Jia Xu, asking, "Can you join my team, Jia Xu?"
Jia Xu looked at her smiling eyes and nodded vigorously, reaching out to hold her hand.
In this competition, there was no distinction between colleges, only individual and team competition. At the first group meeting after the division, Guo Jia leaned on the table and looked around, asking, "I will be the team leader, any objections?"
Jia Xu looked at Guo Jia and felt like she was the master sister who opened up the field in a cultivation novel, very imposing. Guo Jia was also quite efficient, distributing thick stacks of task books, almost detailing what everyone should do and assigning tasks based on the strengths of the team members.
No one knows how Guo Jia managed to complete these tasks in such a short time, but it does give people a feeling of being taken on a journey, a feeling of overwhelming joy at being in the right team.
What's surprising is that Guo Jia entrusted the most crucial data analysis part to Jia Xu. When Jia Xu took the task book and flipped through two pages, he uncertainly asked, "Is it me?"
Guo Jia raised a delicate eyebrow and asked, "Can't you do it?" Jia Xu shook his head and said, "No problem." So Guo Jia smiled, leaned back in the soft chair, and casually put his legs on the armrest, saying, "If there are any issues, raise them now. If not, the meeting is adjourned. I want to see your progress in three days."
After the team members left in twos and threes, only Guo Jia and Jia Xu were left in the meeting room. Guo Jia seemed to be waiting for Jia Xu to speak first, but after waiting for a long time, there was only the sound of Jia Xu busily analyzing data. Feeling defeated, Guo Jia slid his chair and tapped the pen on the table, causing it to roll over to Jia Xu's hand. Jia Xu looked up and gestured for Guo Jia to speak. Guo Jia asked her with frustration if she had nothing to say. Jia Xu thought for a moment and said, "You looked handsome when you assigned the tasks, didn't you?" Guo Jia fell completely silent, lying motionless on the table like a corpse.
Jia Xu playfully poked Guo Jia's arm and asked if they wanted to go eat together. Guo Jia happily agreed, and the two of them squatted at a roadside stall near the venue to eat fried rice noodles. On the way back, Jia Xu did have questions to ask, such as why he came to the school to find her, why he chose her for the competition, and why he stayed by her side. However, Jia Xu didn't ask any of these questions, instead standing under a street lamp, watching Guo Jia jumping back and forth on the sidewalk.
Guo Jia didn't know from which crack in the stone she had pried out a small piece of chalk. She squatted by the edge of the green belt, not knowing what she was drawing. Jia Xu leaned over to look at her and saw two hands holding a big-eared rabbit, which the childish Guo Jia had written the initials of two people on.
As they parted ways on the hotel stairs, Guo Jia called out to Jia Xu. He stopped and turned to look at her. The backlit Guo Jia couldn't see his face clearly, but her words hit Jia Xu clearly in the chest. She said, "Jia Xu, I'm glad to see you here, and you will definitely go further."
Across the steps, she seemed to see her clearly smiling, so she smiled too and said, "Guo Jia, I will definitely surpass you."
The life of competition is not easy. Jia Xu needs to put in more effort than others, but at the same time, her progress is unmatched by anyone. From needing Guo Jia to make half of the data analysis revisions, to Guo Jia not being able to find any errors after looking at it three times, Guo Jia looked up at the dark circles under Jia Xu's eyes and asked, "Is it very hard?" Jia Xu shook her head and said it's very fulfilling. Then Guo Jia smiled and said, "Do you want to try giving a speech on stage?" Before Jia Xu could answer, a team member spoke up, "You have no intention of doing it, do you, Guo Jia?" Guo Jia raised an eyebrow in confusion and asked, "Haven't I done enough backup work for you?" Then no one spoke, and Guo Jia shifted her gaze back to Jia Xu and asked her with her eyes.
This is an opportunity where risks coexist. Jia Xu stood in front of Guo Jia without saying a word, but his fingers were tangled behind his back. Finally, Guo Jia said, "Give it a try, Wenhe. Didn't you say you wanted to surpass me?"
Jia Xu shook his head and said, "I don't want you to give me the opportunity."
But in the end, Guo Jia did not take the stage because she fell ill unexpectedly. During a routine meeting, Guo Jia couldn't stop coughing. Everyone thought she just had a cold, and even Guo Jia herself didn't pay much attention to it.
Later, she coughed so hard that she couldn't even complete a sentence, Jia Xu asked if she should just stay like this for now, Guo Jia nodded while coughing, and then unexpectedly coughed up a mouthful of blood. Like in all TV dramas, the bright red blood dripped from Guo Jia's fingertips. In the ambulance, Jia Xu held Guo Jia's hand tightly. She was scared. She had heard about Guo Jia's health condition and noticed her increasing thinness in the past few days. She crouched at the emergency room door, watching the doctors come and go. Listening to the teacher conducting the experiment making a call to Guo Jia's parents, she didn't know how long had passed when a panicked woman came over and asked the doctor about Guo Jia.
A shadow fell across her, and when Jia Xu looked up, she saw a familiar yet unfamiliar face. She tilted her head in confusion, and Xun Yu spoke first, "You must be Jia Xu. I'm Xun Yu, Guo Jia's brother. We're from the same school."
Then Jia Xu remembered. She had seen this face on the school bulletin board, listed under the outstanding graduates. "Xun Yu," she repeated the name slowly, recalling that it was embroidered on Guo Jia's school uniform.
Xun Yu's voice was as gentle as he was, soothing and calming. Unconsciously, it eased Jia Xu's tense nerves. She hesitantly described Guo Jia's symptoms before he collapsed, almost down to the minute.
Xun Yu did not persuade Jia Xu to go back, because for many years, besides them, it seemed that Guo Jia was the first person to appear outside the ward. She had entanglements with everyone, but she was as light as a wisp of willow fluff, running away at the slightest breeze.
The clock went round and round, until the lights in the rescue room came on. After observing in the regular ward all night, Guo Jia's parents and Xun Yu went to communicate with the doctor about the condition, leaving Jia Xu alone standing at the door of the ward, looking through a small window at the pale Guo Jia on the bed.
Only in this way was she quiet, Jia Xu thought, but then she felt that this quietness was too terrifying. Jia Xu wanted to touch Guo Jia's eyes through the window, but she didn't even have the strength to raise her hand.
Guo Jia opened his eyes and felt a sharp pain in his chest. He wondered if the emergency doctor had broken his ribs again. Then he turned his head and saw Xun Yu sitting by the bedside. A stubble of green color emerged from his chin. Guo Jia moved his leg and kicked him. Xun Yu woke up and met Guo Jia's eyes.
