People often say that women are made of water; they can cry when they are sad, rest when they are tired, and act spoiled when in love. Perhaps it is because of this that we possess greater resilience. Sister Luo has experienced confusion, fear, and deep sorrow. After enduring struggles and cleansing, she moves forward with determination when it seems there is no way out.
"Sister Luo, have you been to Beijing?" Luo Fengjuan shook her head.
"Then... do you have enough for medical expenses?"
"Yezi, I sold the house!" Yezi used to think that people like this were foolish. Since they had a terminal illness with no cure, why pour money into the bottomless pit of a hospital? Those who are alive still need to live!
Luo Fengjuan smiled lightly. "Yezi, I know you are a good person, but your luck is not great. You’ve encountered our family; Xiao Fan has practically latched onto you." Hearing this made Yezi feel uncomfortable. Not to mention Beijing, even in America or Japan, there was no cure for Elder Brother Yu's illness. Leaving Xiao Fan and her father behind, her mother reunited with them while Yezi walked alone on the dimly lit street.
"Master, don't be sad; Bidefo's medicine will surely work wonders," Xiao Fang said firmly.
Yezi sighed softly. "Xiao Fang, if Bidefo can't help Little Fan's Dad, then there really is no hope!"
"Master, hope exists in this world!" Yezi forced a smile. As she stepped into the alley where the Lin family lived, the streetlight cast a long shadow of Yezi; she felt a bit dazed.
"Yezi!"
Xiaobinzi's bicycle stopped in front of her. Xiaobinzi seemed very happy, flashing a bright smile that revealed his neat white teeth.
"Xiaobinzi!"
Yezi leaned her head on Lin Haitao's shoulder, and Lin Haitao's heart began to race uncontrollably.
Xiao Fang exclaimed, "Master~! What's wrong with you?" What was wrong? Yezi asked herself the same question. The daze came from the realization that she had not changed; she remained cold-hearted. Upon hearing Sister Luo had sold the house, she instinctively thought Sister Luo was crazy and felt an indescribable envy. She envied couples like Sister Luo and Elder Brother Yu.
"What's wrong?" Lin Haitao noticed Yezhi's unusual behavior as her rejecting hand fell silently. Yezhi remained silent, and Lin Haitao felt a bit anxious, unsure of how to comfort her, his brows furrowing in distress.
"Master, quickly separate! There are nosy onlookers, that Zhao Yueying is squatting in the corner on the right." Xiao Fang shouted anxiously for the sake of her master's reputation.
Yezhi awkwardly took two steps back, realizing that her moment of weakness had caused trouble for Xiaobinzi. Lin Haitao was aware of the people around them; however, the gossip from those strangers was not as important as Yezhi, this friend.
When they returned to the Lin family home, Yezhi began to chatter away with explanations while Lin Haitao listened attentively. Xiao Fang peeked into the main room to check on her master and Lin Haitao, then cast a curious glance at Xiaobinzi.
"Putting aside matters about Elder Brother Yu, Xiaobinzi, I brought you some Mountain Goods to wish you a happy Spring Festival in advance and may all your wishes come true!" She opened her bundle and took out a pack of Pine Nuts, Hazelnuts, two pieces of fiery red Cured Meat, and a pickled Snow Rabbit.
"Thank you, but you don't have to bring me anything in the future!"
"Why not?"
"I'm not picky about food!" Lin Haitao meant to say he was worried about Yezhi carrying heavy bags on the way. However, Yezhi misunderstood and thought the gift was being rejected by Xiaobinzi.
"Oh~! Then I'll go back to my room." Suddenly returning to her room left Lin Haitao puzzled; he wanted to ask but found that Yezhi had already closed the door.
Xiao Fang blinked with dreamy heart-shaped eyes. "Master, you and Xiaobinzi seem quite..."
"Xiao Fang, is Xiaobinzi really that boring? Doesn't like anything?" Yezhi shook her head with a sigh.
"That's not true! Master, Xiaobinzi likes you!" Yezhi's eyes widened as if this were the biggest joke ever. "Xiao Fang~ Haha...!"
"Master, what Xiao Fang said is true!" Xiao Fang exclaimed urgently.
Yezhi squinted and said, "Tell me, how did you figure it out?"
"Just now, you were leaning against Xiaobinzi, and his heart rate increased!"
"Really? He must have been scared by me!" Xiao Fang shouted defiantly, "Master~!"
"Stop right there, your master is immune to handsome guys!"
"Master, Xiaobinzi is really nice!"
"No matter how nice he is, it has nothing to do with me!" Handsome guys make Mu feel insecure, just a sulking one.
...
After a chaotic sleep and munching on four pieces of baked bread, Yezhi arrived at Zhang Dou's House with a bundle. The one who opened the door was Zhang Ling. "Ah~ Sister Ye, it's really you!"
Yezhi smiled and said, "Sister, I can tell you miss me!"
"Sister Ye, I've missed you so much!" Zhang Ling exclaimed joyfully while hugging Yezhi.
"I waited in the village until the flowers wilted, and you never came!" Yezhi pretended to be angry. Normally carefree Zhang Ling became shy and stammered, her little face turning as red as an apple.
"Reiko!"
Yezhi turned around to see a spirited young man appearing before her. "This... is...?"
Zhang Ling shyly lowered her head and said, "Brother Huang!" Hey, what's going on? Yezhi playfully nudged Zhang Ling, who had only been away for a few days, and already a young man was chasing after her. The girl’s charm is irresistible.
"You must be Sister Ye that Reiko often talks about!" Huang the Young Man smiled. Yezhi nodded, looking straight at him, not looking down on this rural person. Not bad!
"Brother Huang, I won't be going to the theater today. You should head back!" Zhang Ling said as she pulled Yezhi into the house, giving Huang the Young Man the cold shoulder.
Yezhi laughed heartily, "This is why you didn't come to our village!"
Zhang Ling blushed and stammered, "I... I packed my things... but Aunt insisted I go on a blind date and even got my mom to be a matchmaker. I just wanted to take a look and leave..."
"This Young Man seems pretty good. You can always play later; good matches like this won't come around again in this village!"
"Sister Ye, you're teasing him!" Zhang Ling covered her face and lightly exclaimed.
After bonding with Zhang Ling, Yezhi presented her New Year gift, "Sister, I'm leaving now. Wishing your family a happy Spring Festival."
"Sister Ye, have a meal before you go!" Yezhi declined Zhang Ling's invitation and headed to the hospital.
The ward was quiet. Xiao Fan sat on the bed with a blank expression. "Xiao Fan!"
"Woo~ Sister Yezi!" Xiao Fan cried as she threw herself into Yezhi's arms.
"What's wrong? Where are Dad and Mom?" Yezhi asked anxiously.
"Woo woo, Sister Yezi, Dad has a lot of red stuff in his mouth... blood is coming out! I'm so scared!" Xiao Fan's cries stirred up a wave of panic in Yezhi's heart.
Before long, Elder Brother Yu appeared in the hospital room with a pale face and unsteady steps. Upon seeing Yezi, he awkwardly smiled, "Yezi, you're here!"
"Elder Brother Yu, you...!"
"It's nothing, throwing up actually feels better." Elder Brother Yu gently patted Xiao Fan's head, "Daddy scared Xiao Fan, it's Daddy's fault!"
"Yezi, don't tell Sister Luo!" Elder Brother Yu looked at Yezi with utmost seriousness. When she nodded, he smiled at her gratefully.
"Xiao Fan, you also have to keep the promise with Daddy. You can't tell Mommy about Daddy coughing up blood." Xiao Fan's eyes were filled with tears as he clenched his small fists, "Xiao Fan is a man; Xiao Fan won't say anything!"
Yezhi spoke hesitantly, "Elder Brother Yu, do you know that Sister Luo sold the house?"
"I know. She wants to take me to Beijing! Even if my illness goes away, it won't be cured, so I have no plans to go. The house has been sold; it's fine. I've asked my only friend to take care of them; he's in Harbin." Yezhi could see that Elder Brother Yu was serious. For some reason, she felt very angry; such a decision from him was exactly what the cold and rational side of her wanted to see, yet now she felt utterly sad.
"Elder Brother Yu, if you're not going to Beijing, how about resting in our village?" No matter how long Bidefo's medicine could keep Elder Brother Yu alive, as long as their family could be happy, one day at a time would suffice.
"Elder Brother Yu, our village has good mountains and water, and the people are even better. Xiao Fan can testify!" Yezhi pressed down on Xiao Fan's head and nodded twice.
"Yezi... this!" Yu Jianhua didn't know what to say. They had seen enough of the warmth and coldness of human relationships as a couple. "Yezi, to be honest with you, my relationship with Xiaofan's mother isn't great. We had a tough time a few years ago; we were worse off than street rats. Now life is gradually getting better, but then I got this illness..." Sometimes fate is just that cruel.
Yezhi smiled, "Elder Brother Yu, the people in our village are really nice. I'm not originally from Zhoujiatun; I came here without a background and lived off others' kindness. When Sister Luo comes back, you should pack your bags; you'll definitely like it there."
"Daddy, I like where Sister Yezi is! Egg Brother, Er Zhu Gege, Village Chief, Zhou Mama... they are all great!" With a decision made, Yezhi boldly went to Zhang Dou's House to borrow a car from Uncle Zhang. After understanding the situation, Uncle Zhang really lent her the car. She didn't expect it to go so smoothly; thanking him profusely as she left the door, she let out a sigh of relief and headed to the hospital.
Luo Fengjuan saw Yezhi and pulled her to a corner of the wall. "Yezi, thank you for your kindness, but I must take him to Beijing. I can't let him leave me and the kids like this."
"Sister Luo, Elder Brother Yu's illness must be treated. If Western medicine can't help, let's try Traditional Chinese Medicine. Besides, Barefoot Aunt's medical skills are really good!" Yezhi said confidently.
Luo Fengjuan was moved to tears, holding Yezhi's hand and unable to say a complete sentence.
Around seven o'clock, Sun Comrade drove to the hospital. Xiaofan was riding in the Small Jeep for the second time, chattering excitedly to his father and mother. The Jeep carefully navigated the icy mountain roads, arriving at Zhoujiatun just past midnight. Sun Comrade wasted no time and waved goodbye to Yezhi as he hurried back.
Yezhi and Sister Luo supported the weak Elder Brother Yu as they slowly walked through the snow. Yezhi felt they were moving too slowly and that it was too cold outside, so she asked Sister Luo to help Elder Brother Yu while she knocked on the door of Zhou San's house nearby.
"Zhou San!" Yezhi shouted at the top of her lungs in the middle of the night.
Startled from his sleep, Wednesday nearly lost control, thinking something serious had happened in the village. "Leaf Sister, what's wrong?"
Yezhi chuckled, "Zhou San, we have a guest at home; it's a patient. I want you to carry him back." Only then did Wednesday relax. "Is that all? Sister, call me more gently next time; you almost scared me to death!"
Yezhi shyly scratched her head. "I was worried you wouldn't hear me."
With Zhou San's help, they quickly returned home. Aunt Zhou was awakened by the noise outside and got out of bed in her clothes.
"Yezhi, why are you out walking at night again? I've told you so many times!" Aunt Zhou said angrily, nearly grabbing a broom to hit her.
"Aunt, don't be mad; we have a guest!"
