Wang Ming wiped the sweat off his face. "Damn, why isn't the food ready yet? It was around this time yesterday."
"Woof! Woof!"
"Get lost, you stupid dog!" Wang Ming swung the iron spatula at the big dog that was barking wildly at him.
The big dog didn't back down; instead, it leaped onto Wang Ming, its white teeth gleaming silver in its mouth.
"Dog bro, I was just joking. Don't be mad, don't be mad!" Wang Ming held back his anger and pushed away the dog's head that was pressing against his neck.
The big dog barked twice and jumped down. Wang Ming sighed in relief but inwardly complained about the dog's owner: "That damn woman is fierce enough; why does her dog have to bully me too? The heavens really have no eyes!"
Suddenly, the big dog took two steps back, its eyes full of pity. "Who are you talking about?" Wang Ming's whole body tensed up. Is she here again?
"Aunt Ye!"
Yezhi smiled sweetly, and Wang Ming instinctively squeezed his legs together. This woman had smiled like that last time and then kicked him so hard he almost became sterile.
"You... you are here to inspect work again," Wang Ming stammered, instinctively guarding himself with the spatula.
"Master, you've already intimidated him with your presence; he's afraid of you!" Yezhi dismissed Xiao Fang's words. If he were really scared, would he dare to curse her behind her back? She placed the basket on the ground. "Time to eat!"
Wang Ming couldn't believe Yezhi would let him off so easily. That day when he said he wanted to stay, she had kicked him eight or ten times and even had that Bear-like Creature push him out of the village. When he resisted, the Bear-like Creature tripped him and sat on him, bouncing up and down. If it weren't for that police officer named Zhang Dou who had once caught him and Aunt Ren Er showing up, he might not have seen the sun rise the next day.
"Aunt Ye! I..."
"Wang Ming!" She had promised Aunt Ren Er to let him go but never said anything about allowing him to stay in their village. If it weren't for Zhang Dou stopping her and privately mentioning some things about this guy, she would never have let a con artist stay another day in their village.
"Yes!" Wang Ming said honestly, but his eyes darted around, making Yezhi feel a bit annoyed. "I told you to eat!"
Wang Ming's heart sank; he wished Yezhi would kick him a couple of times so he could figure something out. Right now, eating rice felt like chewing on wax with the fragrant mushrooms.
"Wang Ming, Zhang Dou said you are a filial son! The first time you stole something, the villagers nearly beat you to death..."
Yezhi's voice gradually faded away as Wang Ming seemed to see himself holding a big hen while being beaten and begging, "Uncle, Auntie, you can hit me all you want, but can I keep the chicken? My mother is sick, and Barefoot Uncle said it needs to be nourished."
"The last time you tricked me out of money was your first time in jail. Your mother almost had a heart attack when she heard about it. Zhang Dou and the others let you off easy, but when you got home, your mother beat you to a pulp." He wasn't just beaten half to death; his mother threatened that if he did it again, she'd die in front of him. After saying that, she fainted and fell seriously ill.
The villagers stopped visiting his family. He wasn't good at farming, so the harvest was poor and life was tough. He initially planned to find a job outside the village to earn some money, but jobs weren't that easy to find. He returned to selling fake medicine and easily made twenty or thirty bucks. When he saw Aunt Ren Er selling Yueyue Shu, it was a surprise; he didn't even know what Yueyue Shu was. However, anything that could make people feel good every month must be something good, so he became interested. Things were going smoothly until he ran into this tough situation with someone named Ye; he had already been quite sensible.
"What exactly do you want to say?" Wang Ming asked gruffly.
He was sent off by this woman and was being watched by a dog; now she was bringing up his mother—what was she trying to do?
"Why are you reacting so strongly?" Yezhi laughed. This person really was a filial son.
"Hey~ don't laugh; when you laugh, I feel like something bad is going to happen!"
"It's good that you have this awareness. Wang Ming, I don't care whether you're inherently bad or if you're a filial son; as long as you work in our village, you'll have food to eat. If you work well, you'll get paid."
"Food? I do so much work for just a small bowl!"
"What do you think I'm here for every day?" Wang Ming rolled his eyes; she was just there to monitor and torment him.
She knew what he was thinking and candidly said, "I'm here to drive you away, but you're tougher than I expected and can endure hardship, so I feel frustrated every day."
Wang Ming felt angry; no wonder meals were getting later and the portions smaller each day. "So what now?"
Yezhi impatiently said, "Didn’t I just say? Work hard and you’ll have food to eat. Do well, and you’ll get paid." She compromised again, her heart softening; she really had no personality to speak of.
"Big Yellow, let’s go!"
Wang Ming held his rice bowl, staring blankly at the departing woman and the dead dog.
...
"Yezi, it seems we can't continue this road construction!"
The weather was getting colder, and once the road froze, it became very troublesome. Besides, they were short on cement and lime. Even with money, these two items couldn’t be bought without approval. Director Zhang wouldn’t grant them any more approvals; the last time was a special exception.
Building roads in the countryside is tough! Her bold claim of "If others won’t build it for us, we’ll do it ourselves" felt a bit reckless now.
Cement and lime? Roads can be built without cement, but lime is essential. Yezhi looked towards the distant mountains and asked, "Village Uncle, do you think there might be limestone in these mountains?"
Zhou Village Head widened his eyes. "I’ve never heard anyone say that. Yezi, don’t worry; I’ll go to the Commune tomorrow!"
Although Yezhi nodded in agreement, she had already made up her mind: she would go up the mountain to find limestone.
That evening, arriving at "my home," Xiao Fang set up her house as a bomb shelter as Yezhi requested. The inside was cold and damp, with a stone square stove in the center. Around the stove were wooden benches, and deep gray earthen bowls sat empty.
Bidefo arrived first, holding a new flavor of liquor he had concocted. As soon as Dulisa entered, she complained about the poor air quality. Yezhi was busy stir-frying ingredients and had no time to pay her any mind. When Xiao Nan arrived, she became Dulisa's trash can: cursing Yezhi, cursing Xianruipu, and lamenting that such gatherings were too few.
Tiansuo and Bai Duoya came together; they strictly adhered to the principle of a monthly "feast party": no empty hands allowed; they had to bring food. However, what they brought were all products from Bodoria Hotel—nothing new or exciting—just things that were overly familiar to those who weren’t short on money; of course, Yezhi was an exception.
"What delicious food did you bring again?" Yezhi exclaimed happily as she rushed over.
"Yezi, don’t burn the ingredients!" Red Bean shouted as she entered.
Yezhi stared at the tree that Hong Dou was hugging, which was laden with bright red small fruits, round like cherries.
"Thank you for the cherries, Hong Dou!" she said, and just after finishing her sentence, Everyone burst into laughter. Xiao Nan asked curiously, "Yezhi, don't you have coffee on Earth?"
"We do!" Xiao Fang, who was stirring the hot pot base, answered quickly.
"Then how come you don't know about it?" Bai Duoya raised an eyebrow.
What kind of look is that? Looking down on me.
Yezhi playfully patted his face, "I'm not an encyclopedia; it's normal not to know everything."
Tiansuo turned away, chuckling: Besides him, there’s someone else who can tease Xiao Bai. Yezhi truly is his good friend!
Bai Duoya narrowed his eyes and said coldly, "You should show some self-respect, woman!"
Yezhi grabbed his cheeks and pulled them outward. Bai Duoya cried out in pain, "Let go, let go!" Yezhi smiled sweetly, "Xiao Bai, I still prefer you like this; look how angry you are—much better than your usual coffin face."
Dulisa pressed her eyes and laughed so hard her hands shook. Bai Duoya couldn't help but throw the "Cheese Fruit Pie" in his hand at Yezhi. She dodged, and the pie splattered on Dulisa's face with a loud smack. "Bai~Du~oya!"
A chaotic battle began...
