Yezhi wondered if the ambush in front of Secretary Zhang was effective. Anyway, Japanese Person had arrived, and the wave of investment was rising higher and higher. "Soon, our Mountain Goods will be exported, and logging camps will be established in the Old Forest!"
"Alas!" How did she become someone with experience? Otherwise, with just immediate benefits, soon Zhoujiatun and Qingwu County would become prosperous. "Alas!" What a pointless sigh! This was not the time for her to be sighing. Contracting the Mountain, Contracting the Mountain, she needed to grasp the mountains behind her first; at least that way, she wouldn't be so passive.
Upon returning to Zhoujiatun, Yezhi sought a secret discussion with Village Uncle. Zhou Village Head also had some thoughts about Contracting the Mountain. He believed that if they secured the mountain, even if it initially led to losses, the sustainable income would be enticing. Moreover, Yezhi had mentioned that there were treasures everywhere in the mountains; while they didn't value them, people from the city, from Province, and foreigners certainly did!
"Then I'll talk to Director Zhang to feel out the situation." This was exactly what Yezhi was waiting for. "I'll inquire in Province, and you just push hard in Commune. We can negotiate any conditions."
"Negotiating any conditions? Isn't that too much?" Yezhi was determined; if she couldn't even defend her own living situation, how could she face being someone from another world? How could she talk about environmental protection?
"Uncle, we only have this one path." Yezhi spoke with unusual conviction.
Zhou Village Head wasn't fully aware yet; he simply trusted Yezhi "blindly."
Early the next morning, the two action-oriented individuals set off separately. Yezhi drove her Hover Car and quickly arrived at the Provincial Capital.
The prosperity of the Provincial Capital left even the experienced Yezhi astonished; it was far more impressive than her memories of home. The blend of Eastern and Western architectural styles, the beautiful Songhua River, and the familiar sight of a Chimney, with thick smoke polluting the sky above. There were trackless trams and trams on tracks directing traffic at roundabouts by a White Traffic Policeman.
Xiao Fang blinked her wide eyes in amazement at everything around her; she seemed like a country bumpkin marveling at everything. "Oh my, what smells so good!"
"Ah~ freshly baked bread!" What was so special about bread? Didn't the owner know how to make it herself?
Yezhi couldn't be bothered to explain to Xiao Fang. She stood at the end of a long line, asking those in front how people from Province lived so stylishly and why everyone was so enthusiastic about buying bread.
"Big Bread probably doesn't know what it's like coming from the countryside!" Yezhi smiled and nodded. "This is my first time in Provincial Capital. Is this Big Bread a specialty of Province?"
"Haven't you heard of the three wonders of Provincial Capital?" Three wonders? Suddenly, Yezhi recalled that Xiaobinzi had mentioned in his letter: drinking beer like watering; bicycles with handlebars facing outward; and Big Bread being like a pot lid.
So it turned out that Big Bread was bread! She thought it was a hat shaped like a pot lid. After waiting for 20 minutes, she finally bought a Big Bread.
True to its name, the size of the Big Bread was enormous—larger than a plate—and particularly dense. For Yezhi, finishing it wouldn't be a matter of one or two meals. Taking a small bite, she found the crust crispy while the inside was soft, filled with various aromas: wheat, alcohol, salt, fruitwood, and lactic acid.
Yezhi felt that she had bought too few and should have purchased around a hundred or eighty to bring back for the people in the Village to taste. This was much better than what she could cook using her rudimentary methods. After repacking, she hurried to Xiaobinzi's school. At the university gate, she was stopped by the gatekeeper who asked her to register.
Walking into the campus, it still featured European-style architecture, and the students were quite fashionable. Yezhi only knew that Xiaobinzi was a student in the Civil Engineering Department. When it came time for college entrance exams, she had naturally urged Xiaobinzi to apply to China University of Political Science and Law, as it aligned with his career aspirations. However, no one seemed to know about China University of Political Science and Law, and Xiaobinzi didn't want to apply far away. There were only a few universities available in Province, and none of them matched his desired major very well. In the end, Yezhi decided on the most prestigious university in Province, leaving the choice of major up to Xiaobinzi, as she insisted that studying something one is not interested in is futile.
But why was the Civil Engineering Department so large? Finding someone felt like searching for a needle in a haystack. Xiao Fang suggested they wait in front of the standalone teaching building of the Civil Engineering Department.
With no good options left, they had to resort to a simple method. The bell signaling the end of class rang beautifully, and groups of students began to exit their classrooms with books in hand.
"Dalin, Dalin, we have a basketball game against the Mechanical Engineering Department this afternoon; you have to participate!" Fu Xiaobing stopped Lin Haitao.
Lin Haitao remained expressionless; he rarely participated in group activities within his department. Classmates privately said he was unsociable, but he preferred it that way. Why was he being approached today? "My right foot is injured. If you don't come, our team will be short one player. You wouldn't want to see your buddies lose to those monkeys from the Mechanical Engineering Department, would you?"
"Yes!"
"What?"
"I can watch!"
"Damn! Are you even part of our department? Don't you have any sense of collective honor?" Fu Xiaobing was truly frustrated by Lin Haitao's indifference; it was all in vain that he had called him so affectionately and tried to improve relationships among classmates.
"I don't have time!"
"Dalin, I'm not saying this lightly; you can't finish all your reading anyway! Missing half a day won't kill you!"
"It will." Again with that! Fu Xiaobing's eyes widened as Lin Haitao walked out of the classroom with long strides.
"Dalin!" Fu Xiaobing caught up and quietly said to Lin Haitao, "Brother, I'm begging you; I'll introduce you to some beauties from our department."
"Beauties!" Yezhi's voice was somewhat loud.
Lin Haitao looked at Yezhi five meters away as if he were dreaming; he rubbed his eyes in disbelief. This time Yezhi had walked right up to him.
"What beauty? I want to see!" Yezhi said as she stepped forward and linked her arm with Xiaobinzi's. Fu Xiaobing initially wanted to say that this woman was shameless, but when he saw Dalin's icy demeanor melting, he was stunned. "Dalin, who is she?"
"My wife!" Lin Haitao answered without hesitation. Fu Xiaobing pouted, feeling that Dalin was completely mismatched; how could he find a village girl?
"Hello!" Yezhi extended her hand, and Fu Xiaobing introduced herself, "I am Dalin's classmate and his only friend."
"Husband, how come you only made one friend? That's so sad!" Fu Xiaobing understood that the other person was speaking Chinese, but she couldn't quite comprehend it.
Clearing his throat, he said, "Dalin, since your wife is here, let me treat you both to a meal!"
"Let's eat another day! Xiaobinzi and I have things to do!" After saying that, Yezhi left with Lin Haitao. Fu Xiaobing was momentarily stunned before squatting down and laughing uncontrollably. "Xiaobinzi, how did Dalin's wife call him a eunuch? That's hilarious!"
The two people who wanted to be alone walked without knowing where to go. Yezhi smiled foolishly at Lin Haitao, who gently brushed her messy hair. "When did you arrive? Why didn't you let me pick you up?"
"Do I need someone to pick me up at my age?" Lin Haitao tightened his grip on her hand. "If I went to pick you up, I could see you sooner." Yezhi felt a bit overwhelmed; it seemed like Xiaobinzi's eyes were devouring her.
She covered Xiaobinzi's eyes and said, "No peeking!" Xiao Fang quickly closed his eyes but thought incredulously about how the master knew he was sneaking a look.
Lin Haitao pulled her hand down. "Wife, I miss you." His tone was casual, yet it made Yezhi's heart race. Sigh~ she felt like she was losing her resistance more and more.
So she asked, "Husband, where is the nearest hotel?"
