Fleet Girls are a unique type of being. When not in their ship forms, they are indistinguishable from human women. However, once they transform, they become ironclad warriors racing across the azure seas. To protect humanity, they engage in the most arduous battles against Deep Sea Shipgirls, willing to sacrifice their lives without regret.
Logically speaking, with such immense power, Fleet Girls could easily be independent and live as modern women without relying on an Admiral. The inherently weak Admiral should merely serve as a diversion in their daily lives—something to keep or discard at will. Yet, this is not the case. Like most human women, they desire a suitable partner to share their lives with. Many Fleet Girls wish to have an Admiral to provide a safe harbor for their hearts, someone to confide in during times of sorrow and vulnerability. However, unlike human women who sometimes settle for less—such as getting on the bus before buying a ticket or marrying before dating—when it comes to finding an Admiral, they refuse to compromise. If there is no spark, no matter how much an Admiral tries to persuade them, it simply won't work, just like with Chuyang earlier.
The notion that pursuing an Admiral is like dating and requires a familiar process is nonsense. In reality, Fleet Girls experience love at first sight with their Admirals, though they may not realize it themselves. Otherwise, how could they possibly give those Admirals a chance to pursue them? Of course, if during their interactions a Fleet Girl discovers that her Admiral is a scoundrel, her initial impression will change, which means that particular pursuit has failed. Thus, in some ways, likening the pursuit of an Admiral to dating isn't entirely incorrect; it just requires that the Fleet Girl has feelings for the person; otherwise, there’s no chance for romance.
As the organization with the largest number of Fleet Girls, Naval Headquarters ensures fairness by requiring any Fleet Girl who signs a contract with an Admiral to leave the organization. This applies even if the Fleet Girl was once a high-ranking member of Naval Headquarters, including those at the level of the Three Admirals. Therefore, every active Fleet Girl within Naval Headquarters is a Free Ship Girl without an Admiral. Notably, Campbell Island, where Naval Headquarters is located, has the highest number of Cursed-Class Shipgirls.
This situation is unavoidable. Compared to those stationed around the world as Gendarmerie Shipgirls, the Fleet Girls living on Campbell Island have fewer opportunities to interact with an Admiral, making it difficult for them to "marry" out. Consequently, every few years, Naval Headquarters selects some particularly outstanding Admirals from around the world and invites them to live on Campbell Island. The purpose is to create more opportunities for the ladies on the island, akin to a large matchmaking event. However, one side consists of Admirals, while the other comprises Fleet Girls.
Some might argue that this means the Fleet Girls at Naval Headquarters would quickly be whisked away by their respective Admirals, posing a risk of dissolution for the organization over time. However, this is not true. Not only are there many successful matches each time these "matchmaking events" occur, but there are also countless stray Fleet Girls applying to join each year. Thus, there is no risk of dissolution for Naval Headquarters.
In truth, Naval Headquarters finds itself in this predicament out of necessity. They hold these matchmaking events because many of their members are among the first generation of Fleet Girls, having existed in this world for nearly seventy years without finding their place. After such a long time without companionship, feelings of resentment often arise among them. Those with strong wills and emotional regulation manage well enough; however, the real concern lies with those who are introverted and struggle with communication and adjusting their mindsets—those reclusive homebody Fleet Girls. Once resentment takes root in their hearts, it often signals the beginning of their decline. A prime example today would be the current Deep Sea Flagship, the Northern Lonely Queen, and the former Deep Sea Shipgirl, Tirpitz.
Rather than having to sink those former companions who have lost their self-awareness and fallen into madness, it would be better to "marry" them off early so that their shared experiences are not in vain. Thus, in essence, most attendees at these matchmaking events hosted by Naval Headquarters are older women who have been forced out of their rooms after living for sixty or seventy years...
As for how effective these events are, one can glean some insight from how frequently they have been held in recent years.
"This is a good thing," said Chuyang calmly. It would be unlikely for him not to feel envious; however, he understands that some things cannot be envied. For instance, pursuing an Admiral, something that comes easily for others has proven exceedingly difficult for him. Without a positive mindset, he might have already driven himself mad over it. Nevertheless, deep down inside, he feels happy for his senior, Shen Yan, having this opportunity.
"What kind of expression is that? Oh right! I forgot you came back early; naturally you wouldn't find this news surprising. So tell me! What happened back then? You only interned for a month at Senior Shen Yan's Naval Base before returning to school? Did you do something wrong and run away out of guilt?" asked Ye Zhengyang, curiosity written all over his face.
To say that their previous senior, Bald Qiang, became a prominent figure in the academy due to his frequent clumsiness would be an understatement. In contrast, Shen Yan, who graduated in the 15th class, was a genuine beauty and an academic powerhouse. Not only was she consistently rated as excellent during her time at school, but she also served as the president of the student council, truly a person of influence. It was said that the line of boys pursuing Shen Yan could stretch from the school gate to the Comprehensive Building.
However, for these aspiring Admirals at the Naval Academy, no matter how beautiful Shen Yan was, she still paled in comparison to the Fleet Girls. But let's not forget that Sister Shipgirls are incredibly rare, and those Admirals capable of constructing Fleet Girls at the Shipyard generally possess good character. So even if they were desperate, they would never resort to pursuing a Loli Destroyer. As for Light Cruisers and Heavy Cruisers of a more mature age, that wouldn't be illegal. After all, there’s a saying about strong alliances! As an Admiral, marrying another Admiral means that the Fleet Girls under both would hardly differ from one another. Thus, countless boys at Rongcheng Naval Academy had their eyes set on Shen Yan.
"Who are you?" Chuyang asked, looking curiously at the woman with long flaxen hair before him. Wasn't she one of the Fleet Girls sitting in that black sedan this morning?
"Firefly?"
