Lexington was a bit puzzled. What was going on today? Why did all the graduates from the class of 2017 look so downcast and listless? Did they not sleep well last night?
She had heard that the class of 2017 had a gathering last night, but even so, on such an important day for receiving their official appointment letters, they shouldn't all be wearing expressions that looked as if they had just lost their parents!
If just one or two of them were in a bad mood, it could be understood, but from the entrance of the academy to the Comprehensive Building, Lexington encountered at least fifty members of the class of 2017, and they all looked the same way. That was a bit much! However, thinking about how there might be guests waiting for her in the office, Lexington suppressed her curiosity.
Sure enough, when she arrived at her office, three people were sitting on the sofa inside.
The middle-aged man in a White Admiral Uniform with Lieutenant General insignia and a short crew cut looked stable and capable; he was Wu Sheng, the commander of the Rongcheng Garrison District. The young woman dressed in urban professional attire was an old acquaintance of Lexington's: Borg, the former Navy Headquarters Aircraft Carrier Fleet Squadron Leader and Vice Admiral of the Navy Headquarters, currently serving as the director of the Military Police Bureau stationed at the Rong City Garrison Branch. The last person accompanying them was Reputation, the Organization Director of Rongcheng Naval Academy.
After a brief exchange of pleasantries, the four took their seats according to their roles. Lexington wasted no time and directly asked, "Vice Admiral Wu, Director Borg, has there been any change in the appointment results for our class of 2017?"
Although the allocation plan for the Naval Base had already been announced during the graduation ceremony meeting, it was not yet final.
From the academy's perspective, they would comprehensively consider each student's actual situation and requests, combined with vacancies provided by Naval Headquarters and Admiral Alliance for allocation. However, this was only a preliminary intention. While Naval Headquarters and Admiral Alliance generally would not dispute the plans submitted by the academy, the final results still required their confirmation.
Of course, sometimes due to changes in circumstances, Naval Headquarters and Admiral Alliance would make appropriate adjustments to allocation plans based on developments in various Battle Zones. This was why Lexington asked.
"No," Wu Sheng and Borg answered simultaneously. They would have liked to make adjustments; recently, due to Deep Sea Tirpitz's influence, major Forward Bases along the southeastern coast were experiencing varying degrees of manpower shortages. However, this year's graduates were simply not qualified for any Forward Bases; even if they wanted to make adjustments, there was no way to do so.
"That's good," Lexington thought as she let out a sigh of relief.
As the President of Rongcheng Naval Academy, even though Lexington has retired from Naval Headquarters, in a sense, she still belongs to Naval Headquarters. However, compared to Naval Headquarters, Lexington cares more for her students. If Naval Headquarters makes adjustments to a plan and the affected students have no objections, that would be fine. But if the adjustments completely exceed the students' intentions, she would have to step in. Fortunately, since there are no adjustments this time, it saves her a lot of trouble. Otherwise, she would have had to argue with Borg, but this little brat is quite reasonable, making it hard for Lexington to counter her.
"By the way, President Lexington, regarding your submitted application, Admiral Alliance headquarters has no objections. However, I must speak frankly; the situation will only become more tense in the future. Based on Zhang Rui's actual circumstances, she is indeed not suitable for the position of formal Admiral. Please consider this carefully," Wu Sheng stated directly.
Having been an Admiral for over thirty years, Wu Sheng has witnessed too many farewells and deaths. He has issued more than ten death notifications for Admirals himself. If this were a few years ago, he wouldn't have said anything even if Zhang Rui were assigned to Nearshore Naval Base. But the situation has changed drastically in recent years; with the increasing frequency of Deep Sea Shipgirl activities, it is likely that soon there will be another tumultuous Great Era. Therefore, Zhang Rui is not suitable for the position of formal Admiral at this time.
"I understand," Lexington replied.
As a former instructor of the Aircraft Carrier fleet at Naval Headquarters and one of the Heavenly Calamity Five Generals from the previous generation, Lexington knows the overall situation in various Battle Zones even better than Wu Sheng does. How could she not realize that Zhang Rui is not fit to serve as an Admiral under the current circumstances?
However, she was truly at her wit's end with that girl and had no choice but to impose such conditions on Zhang Rui.
In fact, after making such a request to Zhang Rui, she informed several graduates from the Naval Academy who were qualified to act as guarantors for Zhang Rui over the years to refuse her request. So in a way, this effectively blocked Zhang Rui's path to becoming an Admiral.
As for whether Zhang Rui could build Heavy Cruiser Girls or acquire them herself, by then she would have developed some ability to barely protect herself in adverse situations. Thus, Lexington did not mind giving Zhang Rui a chance; that was why she submitted her application to Admiral Alliance ahead of time.
"Since that's the case, I won't say more. President Lexington, please gather the graduates for a meeting."
"Okay, Reputation, you go notify them!"
"Understood, President."
Shortly after Reputation left, Wu Sheng also took his leave under some pretext, leaving only Lexington and Borg in the office.
“Lexington, what do you think of Deep Sea Tirpitz?” Borg took a sip of tea and looked at Lexington sitting across from him.
“Deep Sea Tirpitz, what can I think about her?” Lexington replied with a hint of confusion.
“Go ahead and pretend! I don’t believe you haven’t heard any rumors. Over three years ago, if it weren’t for Bismarck’s moment of mercy, where would the Pacific Deep Sea Flagship be now?
I’ve heard that when Deep Sea Tirpitz first fell, it was Bismarck and her sister Tirpitz who were responsible for hunting her down. One is the Admiral of the Navy Headquarters, and the other, although not promoted, still holds the rank of Lieutenant General while idling away on Campbell Island. However, Tirpitz's true strength had already reached that of a General, even stronger than Bismarck. I don’t believe that at the time, when Deep Sea Tirpitz was only partially deep-sea transformed and not very strong, she could escape from the pursuit of these two.”
“So what? We’re no longer in that position; why bother with so much?” Lexington said nonchalantly.
“That’s true. In another two years, I’ll be able to retire too. By then, I’ll just hide inland and let the Deep Sea Shipgirls do as they please!”
“Just you? If the situation really escalates to an uncontrollable level, I don’t believe you would ignore the summons from Supreme Commander Lion.”
“You’re no different. I just hope the situation doesn’t get that bad.”
After saying this, both of their expressions became somewhat heavy. They were both Fleet Girls who had come through that tumultuous Great Era. Countless Fleet Girls stronger than them had sunk in battles against Deep Sea Shipgirls; even the Five Emperors were reduced to just two. And now one of the Deep Sea Flagships, Deep Sea Yamato, has intricate ties to one of the Five Emperors who sank back then.
