"Jaja, what's wrong? Your eyes are so red."
At the dining table, Lexington looked strangely at her sister Saratoga, who was sitting across from her, appearing listless.
"What else could it be, sis? Your voice was so loud last night." Saratoga lowered her voice and then covered her mouth to stifle a long yawn, looking as if she hadn't fully woken up.
"Was it really that loud?" Lexington's face turned red. She and Chuyang had refrained from engaging in anything intimate last night due to their surroundings, but that didn't mean couples needed to do that to find comfort; there were many ways. However, she distinctly remembered keeping her voice very low, and with the partition in place, the sound shouldn't have reached the inner room.
"What sound?" Andrea Doria asked curiously for once.
"Jaja." Lexington's voice suddenly rose an octave.
Unlike fireflies, who could sleep through anything, Andrea Doria never slept soundly. She would wake up at the slightest noise, so if what Saratoga described was true, Andrea Doria would have definitely noticed.
So either her sister was teasing her, or Saratoga had pressed her ear against the partition to listen all night long. There was no other possibility. Regardless of which scenario it was, Saratoga's actions made Lexington feel both embarrassed and angry.
In fact, just as Lexington suspected, Saratoga had indeed crouched by the wall listening for a long time. Even after everything outside had quieted down, the low moans of her sister echoed in Saratoga's mind, leaving her restless and unable to sleep well all night.
While Lexington scolded her sister beside her, Chuyang showed no signs of embarrassment at all and continued calmly peeling eggs for the firefly.
By the time breakfast was finished, the sun was already bright.
Regarding Saratoga's sudden resignation, kindergarten principal Liu Ru readily agreed and even gave Saratoga an extra month's salary. However, as brother-in-law and sister, Chuyang and Lexington were lectured by Liu Ru for over an hour.
Essentially, they were told that they didn't care about their sister and had allowed a fragile girl to live alone outside for so long. They needed to take responsibility and take good care of their sister moving forward.
Finally, Saratoga, amidst the reluctant gazes of the kindergarten children, hugged her several close female teachers one by one before getting into the SUV parked at the kindergarten entrance.
The one who felt the saddest was Dudu. Her favorite teacher was leaving the kindergarten, and she might never see her again. However, Dudu felt a bit strange; why did the teacher feel different today compared to others? It was a very peculiar feeling that little Kiddo didn't quite understand yet.
Unfortunately, this was an inland city and not a coastal military stronghold. Otherwise, a girl with such strong Mental Power at such a young age, capable of distinguishing between Fleet Girls and ordinary people, would surely receive special training from the Admiral Alliance. But it didn't matter; it was only a matter of time before the little girl became an Admiral.
After filling up the SUV with gas at the station, Chuyang stepped on the gas and drove away from the small inland county with a group of Fleet Girls. They took the narrow county road onto the national highway, heading southwest.
Tongcheng is located in central Asia, while Ming City, the largest city in the Southwest Theater and also the headquarters of the Southwest Theater Command, lies to the southwest of Tongcheng. Traveling by train would take nearly seven days, while driving would require at least ten days. Even so, Chuyang preferred to drive rather than squeeze onto a train.
Driving offered freedom; at least they could rest adequately in cities along the way at night instead of tossing and turning on a train all night long.
"Brother-in-law, let me drive!" Saratoga said from the passenger seat when she noticed Chuyang looking somewhat fatigued.
They had been on the road for over four hours since leaving the small county town. Since they hadn't passed through any major towns along the way, they hadn't stopped to rest, and Chuyang indeed felt a bit tired from driving continuously.
"Can you drive? Do you have a license?" Chuyang asked.
In this world, due to the high cost of cars, learning to drive was also expensive. It wasn't like in Chuyang's previous life where everyone had a driver's license even without owning a car.
As an Admiral, he had learned driving both cars and ships as compulsory subjects during his time at Rongcheng Naval Academy, so he obtained his license early on.
Lexington had previously spent money to get her license out of boredom just to pass time, but her skills were really lacking.
As for Andrea Doria, who claimed to be good at driving but couldn't even distinguish between the gas and brake pedals, it was quite amusing that she thought she could drive!
Thus, Chuyang had no expectations for Saratoga's driving skills.
"Brother-in-law, don't underestimate me! Every time the kindergarten bus driver took leave, I was the one who drove those kids home," Saratoga retorted unhappily.
Sister-in-law is not bragging; it's true that in some ways, Saratoga is a much better driver than Chuyang, truly at the level of an Old Driver.
"What about your driver's license?" Chuyang asked. However, he was just teasing Sister-in-law. The traffic regulations in this world are not strict, and there is a lack of effective enforcement, so there are plenty of unlicensed drivers. Besides, they are currently in a remote area where not a single person can be seen in the vast expanse of land. Let alone traffic police.
"I don't have one," Saratoga replied, her tone weakening a bit.
She did want to get a driver's license, but with her monthly salary of just over three thousand, she would need to save for at least a year without spending anything to barely afford the exam fees. So Saratoga couldn't afford to get a driver's license.
"Can you really drive?"
"Yes, really. More real than gold."
"Then you drive!" With that, Chuyang pulled the car over to the side of the road.
On one hand, he didn't want to see Sister-in-law feeling down; on the other hand, he was indeed a bit tired. Considering the long journey ahead, having someone else take turns driving would surely make things easier. So Chuyang didn't mind giving Saratoga a chance.
Once back on the road, Chuyang noticed that Saratoga's driving skills were quite good—at least smoother than his own—so he relaxed and closed his eyes to rest. When he opened them again, it was already night, and darkness enveloped the outside world.
Just then, a large Truck loaded with goods roared past their vehicle with a thunderous engine noise, kicking up clouds of dust.
"Daring to overtake my car? Just wait!" With that, Saratoga pressed down on the accelerator and chased after it.
