Sang Yan's actions were too sudden, leaving the landlord momentarily confused and at a loss. Wen Yifan came to her senses, took a deep breath, and tried to remain calm as she asked Sang Yan, "How did you end up here?"
Sang Yan did not answer her question and walked straight into the living room, placing the suitcase he was carrying down before turning to Wen Yifan and casually saying, "The landlord is my uncle. He asked me to come over and deliver the keys."
"Deliver... the keys?" Wen Yifan looked at him in disbelief, her mind a jumble.
Only then did the landlord react, quickly explaining, "Yes, yes! Little Wen, my nephew lives next door, so I asked him to make a trip."
"Next door?" Wen Yifan's heart skipped a beat as images of the apartment Sang Yan had lived in before flashed through her mind. Could it be...
Sang Yan ignored their conversation and began surveying the room. His gaze finally landed on Wen Yifan, a playful smile tugging at his lips. "What’s wrong? Surprised to see me?"
Wen Yifan suppressed her panic and forced a calm nod. "It is a bit unexpected."
"Unexpected? We were high school classmates, neighbors for seven years, and now we’re... roommates. Isn’t that quite a coincidence?" Sang Yan emphasized the word "roommates."
Wen Yifan's heart sank; she never imagined that after all this time, she would end up as Sang Yan's neighbor again, and even on the same floor!
"Room... roommates?" The landlord looked bewildered, clearly still trying to grasp the situation.
"Uncle, don’t you remember? I told you I wanted to move here to take care of you," Sang Yan lied without batting an eye, then pointed at Wen Yifan. "This is my future neighbor, Miss Wen."
The landlord suddenly understood. "Oh right! How could I forget? Little Wen, what a coincidence! You two already know each other?"
Wen Yifan forced a smile. "Yes, we were classmates in high school."
"That’s really quite fateful!" The landlord chuckled. "You young people should communicate more and look out for each other."
Wen Yifan awkwardly smiled again, unsure of how to respond.
Sang Yan looked at her embarrassed expression, and the smile at the corner of his mouth deepened. He walked over to the suitcase and began to organize his things.
"Um..." Wen Yifan hesitated for a moment but couldn't help but ask, "Why did you suddenly decide to move here?"
"What's wrong? Am I not welcome?" Sang Yan glanced at her, his tone teasing.
"That's not what I meant..." Wen Yifan quickly denied it; she just found it too sudden and was having a hard time accepting it.
"Then that means I am welcome?" Sang Yan put down the clothes in his hands and walked in front of her, looking at her intently.
Wen Yifan felt a bit flustered under his gaze and instinctively took a step back. "I..."
"Alright, I'm not teasing you anymore." Seeing that he had pushed enough, Sang Yan turned around to continue organizing his luggage. "I just think the environment here is pretty good, and it's close to my bar, so I moved here."
Wen Yifan let out a sigh of relief, but her heart was still filled with confusion and unease.
"By the way," Sang Yan seemed to suddenly remember something and took out a painting from the suitcase. "This painting is more suitable for you."
Wen Yifan took the painting; it was a watercolor landscape depicting a golden ginkgo forest. The scene was beautiful and dreamy, filled with the essence of autumn.
"This is..." Wen Yifan recognized the painting; she had painted it during her senior year in high school and had given it to a friend at that time, but she didn't know what had happened to it afterward.
"My uncle said this painting was left by the previous tenant. I thought you would like it, so I brought it over," Sang Yan explained.
"Thank you." Wen Yifan lowered her head, looking at the painting in her hands, feeling a mix of emotions.
"No need to thank me." Sang Yan smiled lightly. "It's just a small gesture; consider it a housewarming gift between neighbors."
Wen Yifan didn't say anything else and quietly set the painting aside.
"It's getting late; I won't disturb you any longer. You should rest early," Sang Yan said as he picked up his coat, preparing to leave.
"Wait a minute." Wen Yifan suddenly called out to him.
"Is there something else?" Sang Yan stopped and turned to look at her.
Wen Yifan took a deep breath, gathering her courage to ask, "Sang Yan, why are you doing this?"
Sang Yan was slightly taken aback. "Doing what?"
"Why did you move here? Why are you being so nice to me?" Wen Yifan looked directly into his eyes, her tone carrying a hint of questioning.
Sang Yan fell silent for a moment, then walked up to her, gazing deeply into her eyes as he slowly spoke, "Wen Yifan, after seven years, do you really not understand my feelings?"
Wen Yifan was stunned by Sang Yan's sudden confession, her heart skipping a beat. Memories of sweet and bitter moments from seven years ago surged in her mind—those youthful stirrings, the words left unspoken, the regrets that could not be mended—all came flooding back in that instant. She stared blankly at the familiar yet unfamiliar man before her. Over the seven years, he had shed his youthful naivety; his features now bore the charm of a mature man, yet his deep affection remained unchanged.
Sang Yan gazed lovingly at Wen Yifan, his eyes reflecting her figure—the person he had cherished for seven years. He awaited Wen Yifan's response, hoping for an answer that would allow him to love her without hesitation. He knew this confession might shatter the fragile peace they had built, but there were some things he no longer wanted to wait to say.
The air was thick with ambiguity and tension; all that could be heard in the room were their breaths and the occasional sound of cars passing outside. After a long pause, Wen Yifan took a deep breath as if making an important decision. She slowly began to speak, her voice trembling with uncertainty: "Sang Yan, I..."
"Yifan!"
Suddenly, a familiar voice from outside interrupted Wen Yifan's impending words.
The door swung open, revealing a tall and handsome man standing in the doorway. Upon seeing the scene inside the room, he paused for a moment before smiling and saying, "Looks like I’ve interrupted something."
It was Duan Jiaxu.
Seeing Duan Jiaxu felt like grabbing onto a lifeline for Wen Yifan. She quickly stepped back, creating distance between herself and Sang Yan, her voice tinged with panic: "Brother Duan, what are you doing here?"
Duan Jiaxu placed the gift bag he was holding on the table and explained with a smile, "I just got back from a business trip abroad and brought some gifts for you and Yining. I thought I’d stop by since I was nearby." He then turned his gaze toward Sang Yan, curiosity flashing in his eyes. "And who is this?"
"I..." Wen Yifan began to introduce him but was cut off by Sang Yan who spoke first.
"Hello, I am Sang Yan, Wen Yifan's... friend." Sang Yan walked up to Duan Jiaxu, extended his hand, and wore a polite smile, though his eyes were inscrutable.
Duan Jiaxu shook hands with Sang Yan and replied gently, "Hello, I am Duan Jiaxu, Wen Yifan's brother's friend."
After a brief exchange of pleasantries, the atmosphere in the room became somewhat delicate. Duan Jiaxu's presence disrupted the previously ambiguous ambiance and caused Wen Yifan to swallow back the words she had intended to say.
"Yifan, you haven't eaten yet, have you? I’ll take you to your favorite restaurant," Duan Jiaxu observed Wen Yifan's pale complexion and asked with concern.
"I..." Wen Yifan glanced at Sang Yan, hesitating on how to refuse.
"Go ahead, don't keep him waiting," Sang Yan said softly as he walked over to Wen Yifan, his tone devoid of any emotion.
Wen Yifan bit her lip and ultimately nodded, saying to Duan Jiaxu, "Then thank you, Brother Duan."
"No need to be polite with me," Duan Jiaxu smiled as he picked up the gift from the table. "Let's go."
As Wen Yifan followed Duan Jiaxu out of the apartment, she couldn't help but glance back at the door. Sang Yan was still standing there, looking at her with a complex expression as if waiting for something.
Wen Yifan felt a sharp pain in her heart. She wanted to say something but ultimately remained silent and turned to leave with Duan Jiaxu.
