Xuan Mo clenched his fists and looked at Liu You'er's profile. If she really needed to sleep... with so many high-level Mutated Bats, even if he exerted all his strength, it would be difficult to protect her completely. Did the doctor not care about her life just to test her?
He felt conflicted for a moment but silently released his Ability. With the help of the wind, the Bat swarm surged forward, their flying speed increasing two to three times, closing the distance to less than a hundred meters in under ten minutes.
Liu You'er was riding on a horse when she sensed the sudden acceleration of the Bat swarm. She tilted her head slightly towards Xuan Mo, her brows furrowing in confusion for less than a second before relaxing, a glint of cold light flashing beneath her lowered eyelids.
“Zzz”
A sound wave that was almost inaudible yet shook her insides rushed towards Liu You'er.
“Bang”
Fifty meters behind them, a tree as thick as two people could hug shattered with a loud noise, startling Liu You'er. Even from that distance, she could feel the impact.
She moved swiftly, jumping onto Xuan Mo's horse to ride together with him, speaking urgently: “We need to Teleportation away. If I fall asleep now, I'm done for!”
“Remember to bring my little cuties!”
“...”
Xuan Mo blinked and realized they had not left the forest. The Bat swarm had already surrounded them like a black hurricane, leaving no chance for escape. The Fourth-Level Mutated Bat flew at the highest point, its green bean-sized eyes glowing red, greedily staring at them.
“Damn! Why are we still here? Are you reliable or not?!”
“Shut up!”
Hearing Xuan Mo's words, Liu You'er glared at the swarm of bats, actually viewing them as Xuan Mo and W Doctor. With that Barrier here preventing her from using Teleportation, it seemed that W Doctor had set this up long ago.
First, he used seeing him as an excuse to lure her out, then used finding the Evolved Tiger Core as an excuse to have Xuan Mo take her into the forest. Just when she was about to fall asleep, he controlled the Mutated Bats to attack.
After all, that pervert Wei Yuan could control Little Zombie two years ago; it was no surprise he could control Mutated Bats. Hmph, the timing was quite perfect.
“Testing me?! Heh heh~”
Liu You'er's mind was racing, but in reality, it was less than half a second. She slowly approached Xuan Mo and said in a serious yet soft voice, "I can't teleport, and I might fall asleep soon. I can hold on for another twenty minutes at most; after that, it's up to you."
Xuan Mo silently glanced at Liu You'er, a fleeting cold light flashing in her eyes, so quick that it was almost undetectable.
If she really fell asleep, injury was inevitable; but if she didn't sleep, death was certain.
"Then let's destroy them together."
Hearing Xuan Mo's seemingly relaxed yet serious tone, Liu You'er scoffed disdainfully in her heart, mocking, "What great acting! I'll kill you sooner or later!"
A long and sharp sound pierced the air as the Fourth-Level Mutated Bat emitted a cry. The Third-Level Mutated Bats simultaneously unleashed a barrage of sound waves toward the two women and their horses.
B City Base
Buzzing sounds filled the air.
Chuze stood in the center of a room surrounded by large light blue holographic Light Screens, resembling a futuristic world from a movie. He operated the screen in front of him when suddenly, a sound came from the left screen.
His bony index finger bent slightly as he pushed up his glasses and turned his body to face it.
It was a massive topographic map that included a panoramic view of hundreds of kilometers around the base, detailed down to every street and tree. He swiped his hand down on the Light Screen, transforming it into a flat surface that displayed a 3D topographic map. One hundred kilometers away from the base, there was a small mountain with a red light flashing at its midpoint.
He pointed at the red dot with his right hand while casually waving his left hand below the flat surface, causing a Light Screen Keyboard to appear.
His fingers danced over the keyboard like they were playing the piano, moving so quickly that they created afterimages, making it hard to distinguish which fingers were actually pressing the keys. In less than ten seconds, a video feed from within a forest appeared on the screen before him.
He calmly observed the swarm of bats for a moment before raising his left hand to his lips. A holographic speaker appeared on his watch.
"Flame, come here."
His cold voice matched his expression—detached and seemingly indifferent to everything around him.
Five minutes later, "Flame" arrived at Chuze's office. His elegant demeanor was completely ruined by his cold expression; it was more fitting to call him "Ice" than "Flame."
"Buzz~"
Chuze grabbed a light screen from his subordinate and threw it in the direction of Flame. Flame looked at the video on the screen, still showing no expression. He simply said, "Understood," and walked out the door.
"Whoosh."
A sound came from behind, and Flame turned around to catch a small white ball, about the size of a child's fist, with a hint of confusion as he looked at Chuze.
"This is an upgraded sound wave device to drive away Bat. Throw it into the Mutated Bat Swarm and run immediately; a helicopter will take you away."
Flame nodded and left.
From what he had learned about Chuze over the past two years, he knew that when he spoke so briefly, it meant that if he didn't run, this little gadget could definitely kill him.
In the forest
Half an hour had passed. Xuan Mo and Liu You'er were continuously slaughtering within the swarm of Bat. For them, the swarm was currently the safest place because they wouldn't attack their own kind, allowing them to suffer less from sound wave damage.
As for the two horses, they were now lying on the ground, barely alive. Although they appeared fine on the surface, they were all bleeding from their seven orifices and unable to move; they were likely close to death.
Xuan Mo was covered in sharp wounds. He couldn't tell if these Bat were poisonous or diseased; his wounds burned painfully. He turned his gaze toward Liu You'er, noticing that her movements were becoming slower and her eyes were constantly fluttering.
Just as he took a step toward Liu You'er, he paused, turned around, gritted his teeth, and produced a black pill in his hand. After swallowing it, a cool sensation flowed through his body, and his wounds immediately stopped hurting.
He didn't even realize how numb his expression had become, devoid of any emotion.
"Xuan... Mo."
Liu You'er's voice sounded behind him. His gaze darkened slightly as he pretended not to hear her and continued attacking the incoming Bat, dodging sound waves through the movement of air.
"Thud."
The sound of something falling caused him to freeze momentarily, and a Bat took the opportunity to slash a bloody mark across his face, but the next second, this Bat was shattered into countless pieces by a blade of wind.
The nearby Bats, upon hearing the sound of the fall, instinctively abandoned Xuan Mo and rushed towards Liu You'er, their hard teeth viciously tearing at her skin.
Liu You'er felt the bites of the swarm of Bats and was in immense pain; however, she did not move an inch, lying there like a sleeping child, her breathing steady.
Her mind, however, was painfully clear. The venom from these Bats was unbearable, almost making her scream; it was no less painful than the agony she experienced two years ago when she was injected with mutated blood at the research institute, perhaps even worse.
Additionally, the previous sonic attack made her feel as if her internal organs were being burned by fire, nearly vaporizing. Yet, no matter how much pain she felt, it could not compare to the heartache she experienced when witnessing that scene on the city wall!
The attacks from the Bats continued. She could not wake up. Although these Bats were harming her, they were not killing her; otherwise, she would have been dead long ago.
Now it was just a matter of how long W Doctor would continue his experiment.
Meanwhile,
A man who appeared to be around fifty years old, with a mix of black and white hair, was staring at the screen. He glanced at the data beside him and noticed nothing unusual; even Liu You'er's heart rate had not increased once. He twirled the jade ring on his index finger and pressed a button on the controller in his hand.
"Zzz~"
The Fourth-Level Mutated Bat's eyes glowed red as it bared its sharp teeth and lunged towards Liu You'er. The Third-Level Bats sensed the commotion and scattered to either side, revealing Liu You'er's bloodied body.
