"Did they leave?"
Zhao Ling muttered this phrase with vacant eyes, staring blankly at Liu You'er, tears still lingering in her eyes, which made Liu You'er feel a pang of sympathy.
"Why are you here?"
She slowly stood up, facing Liu You'er directly.
"Aren't you out there killing for fun? Why are you here?"
Upon hearing this, Liu You'er wanted to say something but held back her words, only managing to suppress the emotions in her eyes.
"With your abilities, saving my grandfather from that ordinary person Zhao Feng should be a piece of cake for you. Did you deliberately watch him die?"
"You've already made up your mind; why ask?"
"Made up my mind? Hmph..."
Seeing Liu You'er turn away, Zhao Ling grabbed her arm tightly, her nails digging into Liu You'er's skin. When she saw the black blood oozing out, her eyes filled with hatred.
"So it’s true. Hmph, I knew ever since you arrived that so many things would happen."
Liu You'er stiffened for a moment and fell silent because she couldn't deny it. However, her silence only confirmed Zhao Ling's suspicions.
Zhao Ling lowered her head and slowly released Liu Youer's arm, wiping away her tears. She picked up the body of Zhao Commander and walked straight off the stage. Just then, she ran into Chuze but left without saying a word.
Liu You'er watched that small figure take a step forward unconsciously. Suddenly remembering something, she stopped and looked back toward Liu Xinxuan's original position.
"Did they run away?"
She looked at Zhao Feng crawling in the mud, her gaze darkening as she stepped hard on his back.
"How does it feel to be outplayed and abandoned by your daughter?"
Zhao Feng spat out blood and glared fiercely at Liu You'er's face.
"At least it's better than being used and causing the death of your own family! Hahahaha!"
"Oh, then where are your family now?"
Liu You'er sneered at the fear hidden in Zhao Feng's eyes.
"Don't..."
"Bang!"
With a stomp, Liu You'er watched as the head beneath her foot turned into a pile of mush, red and white splattering onto her shoe, filling her with immense satisfaction.
Chuze observed Liu You'er's smile and the coldness in her eyes, feeling for the first time that something was slipping out of control; some things had already changed.
At that moment, Liu You'er turned to look at him. In their brief eye contact, even though his expression was blank, he knew his helplessness had been seen through.
And Liu You'er also realized that what she wanted was now out of reach.
She was moving closer to becoming a true Zombie.
"It's her! She's the Zombie from the video!"
"What? Help!"
"Ah, the monster is coming!!!"
"Run away!"
Liu You'er quietly accepted the fearful, disgusted, and disdainful gazes directed at her, watching them flee in terror. She turned to Chuze and smiled brightly before calmly turning away, taking the antidote and restoring her original appearance.
From now on, she no longer needed to worry about her identity being exposed or being besieged by humans; her opponents were all of humanity.
"I'm leaving."
She paused for a moment, turning her head slightly back but received no response.
It didn't matter; since she would eventually become one of those monsters, she might as well continue to resolve the matters she needed to address before that.
Chuze watched Liu You'er’s departing figure, feeling as if he were submerged deep underwater, unable to breathe.
"Let her go? No regrets?"
Zhuge looked at Chuze's extremely indifferent expression and shook his head helplessly.
"I will explain Zhao Commander's situation to Ling'er. He was already in the late stages of cancer, at the end of his strength, and he brought up this plan himself to clean up the base..."
"You can explain it; just don't let her cause trouble."
This "her," Zhuge naturally knew who it referred to, and he sighed.
"Alright, I'll go check on Ling'er. You handle the mess at the base."
With that, he turned and left.
Chuze simply stared in the direction Liu You'er had left, motionless like a stone statue. He didn't know how long it had been before he left with the soldiers.
Just moments ago, Liu You'er had disregarded his objections and insisted on killing Zhao Feng, which successfully awakened him.
As intelligent as he was, he already knew that everything was beyond redemption, but he was still deceiving himself.
He tried hard to suppress the virus in Liu You'er, but in reality, the reason she had killed so many people was not the virus; it was because of her own choices.
Although the virus was slowly infiltrating Liu You'er's brain, making her more and more like a zombie, the truth was that if Liu You'er did not want to kill, she simply wouldn't.
All of her actions were not just due to the virus making her cruel and indifferent; it was also because she believed she was doing what was right.
Those who wanted to harm her—kill.
Those who obstructed her—kill.
Those who stole resources—kill.
In fact, the person she used to be had died long ago at some moment he did not know.
He understood that what Liu You'er was doing in this apocalypse was correct; if one did not kill, one would only be killed.
Yet he still tried various ways to make Liu You'er change back to who she used to be, believing that he could protect her when in reality it was just a fantasy.
The current version of her and the one he liked were merely two different people sharing the same body; the current her was the real her.
Before, he might have been able to persist and leave with Liu You'er, but now...
He thought of Commander Zhao, poisoned and unable to speak, struggling to write down words in his hand.
"Base Defense"
He clenched his fist lightly, the rough and slightly sticky sensation still vivid in his memory.
Everything has been set in stone.
On the other side
Zhao Ling carried "Grandpa" on her back, tears falling drop by drop. Suddenly, she felt some movement behind her, and her steps faltered.
"Has Grandpa turned into a Zombie?"
That was her first reaction, and she hurriedly and carefully set the person on her back down.
"Ouch."
A young voice emerged from the mouth of "Zhao Commander."
Zhao Ling stared in astonishment as the "corpse" in front of her sat up and looked at her, his gaze completely different from Grandpa's.
"What’s wrong? Don’t you recognize me?"
"Xuan Mo?"
She watched as Xuan Mo got up from the ground, popped a small pill into his mouth, and wiped his face, revealing his original appearance.
"I know you have a lot of questions, but I'm a bit busy, so I’ll be leaving now. Let him explain it to you, White."
"Whoosh~"
Wind Sound The great work made Zhao Ling squint her eyes, and at the same time, Xuan Mo disappeared from the spot.
"Come back to me!!!"
"Ling'er."
Zhao Ling turned around, looking at Zhuge with anticipation, excitedly grabbing his arm.
"What exactly is going on? My grandfather, is he really not dead?!"
Zhuge looked at her hopeful eyes, his gaze wavering for a moment.
"Follow me."
Zhao Ling sensed something was off in his tone, but what could be worse than the current situation?
However, when she saw the scene before her, her heart ached immensely.
Through the window, she could see an old man whose body was glowing an abnormal red; after a while, it turned purple, and sometimes his skin even appeared translucent.
"Commander has been poisoned, and the antidote is still being researched; it just needs some more time."
She lowered her head and calmed herself for a moment before quietly saying, "I just want to ask, was sending me out back then meant to... prevent me from protecting my grandfather?"
