"You must have had a hard time coming here, especially with how terrifying it is outside."
A kind old grandmother looked at them with concern, as if they were her own grandchildren. If it were an act, her performance could easily win multiple Oscars.
"Brother, sister, what is it like outside?"
The girl who had just picked fruit looked at them with eager eyes, a hint of worry in her expression.
"Auntie, why are you so pale?"
A tender-looking four-year-old child asked.
"Chatter, chatter, chatter."
"…"
The two were surrounded by a group of people—men and women, young and old—some bold and some shy. What they all shared was kindness and warmth in their eyes, completely unguarded, and none of them possessed any abilities!
This place, reminiscent of a paradise, set off alarm bells in their minds. Yet everything these people did was so sincere and selfless. They not only offered them the biggest house to stay in but also prepared a rabbit for them from the fewer than ten that lived in this oasis.
Fruits and other treats were generously arranged and washed for their enjoyment.
Everyone gathered around a simple wooden table.
The two looked at the steaming roasted rabbit meat in front of them, along with the fresh fruits. Though they smiled on the surface, their hearts were already racing.
"Do you want to eat?"
The two exchanged a quick glance. Although the food in front of them was very appealing to humans, Xuan Mo would not act recklessly, especially considering Liu You'er, who was only interested in raw meat as a half-Zombie.
Moreover, who knew if they were just pretending?
At that moment, a little boy was drooling over the rabbit meat in front of the two Ant Faces. He was scolded by a woman nearby and obediently returned to his meal, though his eyes still wandered back to the meat.
"Hey, kid. Come here~"
Xuan Mo smiled, and his charming demeanor successfully made some younger girls shy away. The little boy obediently approached him and did not resist being picked up. In a sweet voice, he asked, "Uncle~ What’s wrong?"
"Uncle?"
Xuan Mo frowned slightly and pointed at Liu You'er, saying, "Then what do you call her?"
The boy was taken aback, looking confused. He tilted his head to look at Liu You'er and replied, "Of course, it’s Sister~"
"Oh."
Liu You'er chuckled lightly and waved at him, saying, "Good boy~ Come here, Sister will give you some meat."
"Really?!"
The boy's face turned red with excitement as he jumped down from Xuan Mo's lap without hesitation and ran over to Liu You'er, climbing onto her lap.
"Ah~"
Liu You'er looked at his sparkling eyes and tore off the tenderest piece of meat, placing it in his mouth.
He chewed happily with his cheeks puffing out and exclaimed, "Wow~ So this is rabbit meat! It's my first time eating it, and it's so delicious~"
Liu You'er smiled and remained silent. Xuan Mo, seeing his expression, pretended to be dissatisfied and said, "Come here, I'll give you some meat too if you call me brother. How about that?"
The child hesitated for a moment, glancing at the woman who had just scolded him. He declared firmly, "No way! Mom said that children shouldn't lie, or else the wolf will take them away!"
"Ha!"
Everyone at the table burst into laughter, and Xuan Mo chuckled, "I didn't expect you to be so honest!"
"Of course!"
Upon hearing this, Liu You'er’s expression softened a bit.
"Alright then, I'll reward you with a bite. I hope you'll continue to be an honest good child in the future, okay?"
"Really?!"
The child happily opened his mouth and took another bite. Although he still wanted more, he contentedly returned to his meal.
Liu You'er pretended to eat but was actually observing their food. He noticed they were using bowls made from some kind of fruit shell, filled with a sticky substance that emitted a plant-like aroma, which looked unappetizing. Next to them was a piece of fruit that could be eaten in one bite.
As for water, they would go to the creek to scoop some whenever they were thirsty, but they wouldn't take much—just enough for a couple of sips.
After a while, the child eating meat was still full of energy, but the two others hadn’t eaten anything as Liu You'er had secretly hidden it away in his space.
The sun rose, casting light across the land.
After finishing their meal, the girl who picked fruits, named Lan'er, was responsible for showing the two around the oasis. It wasn't large; they could complete a circle in an hour and a half.
However, despite its small size, it was well-equipped with everything essential.
In the infirmary, at Farmland, the school had everything one could need. Although there were fewer than a hundred people, it was still a small society.
"Lan'er, how did you end up here?"
Lan'er looked delicate and fair, appearing very clean, especially when she smiled; it was extremely pleasant to behold.
She seemed a bit troubled as she said, "I don't really remember. I just woke up and found myself here. The people are all very nice, like family, so I'm not really interested in knowing about the past. I feel quite satisfied with things as they are now. Hehe~"
After that, Liu You'er and Xuan Mo didn't continue the conversation, skipping over the topic and quietly listening to her introduce the oasis. Looking at the tranquility and beauty in her eyes, they both felt a sense of wonder, unable to believe it was real.
Upon returning to their residence, the two checked around and found no surveillance or listening devices; there weren't even any electrical appliances—just an ordinary wooden house. This discovery left them both feeling overwhelmed.
"W's base is built underneath this?"
Xuan Mo frowned and said, "That should be the case."
Upon hearing this, Liu You'er fell silent for a moment. Although her emotions had dulled, she hadn't completely lost her feelings; she still had her own boundaries and conscience. Moreover, these people had no capacity for resistance. If she were to go to war with W, what would happen to them afterward?
In just half a day, she had already gathered enough understanding of this place.
This pure land was something that could not be possessed even before the apocalypse; everyone helped each other, trusted one another, and cared for each other.
"Could this be our illusion?"
Seeing Liu You'er’s conflicted expression, Xuan Mo smiled and said, "I thought you had been completely brainwashed by that Zombie virus and lost all humanity. It seems there's still a bit left after all~"
"Shut up! Is there any need to kill prey that can't fight back?"
Xuan Mo lay down, looking at the wooden beams on the ceiling, and calmly said, "Let's just observe how things unfold; eventually, the fox's tail will show. I'm tired; I'm going to sleep now~"
Liu You'er wanted to say something, but felt that the Oasis Residents were unapproachable and difficult to deal with, so she decided to leave it at that for now.
She lay down, listening to the even breathing of the person next to her, her expression unconsciously stiffening. Although she could deliberately make expressions, it often turned out this way in her daily life, and she couldn't control it...
Time was running out!
Thinking of this, she suddenly sat up and disappeared from her spot in the next moment.
Xuan Mo's eyes moved slightly, but she didn't open them; she just sighed.
She kept hiding her figure, weaving through the trees and green leaves. The farmers showed no signs of complaint or laziness; each one worked diligently with cheerful faces, occasionally joking with one another.
Not giving up, she approached the women again and saw an elder telling fairy tales to the children while a woman mended clothes and cooked.
"What’s going on?"
She frowned, having checked all the empty houses. Inside, apart from basic furniture, there were small toys made of grass roots and branches—nothing else.
Four or five hours later, when Xuan Mo heard a sudden sound nearby, she knew Liu You'er had returned. She raised an eyebrow and asked, "Did you find anything?"
Liu You'er shook her head expressionlessly.
"Haha~ So did you find the mechanism?"
Liu You'er shot him a cold glance.
"Ahem, alright, alright. Then let's just observe for now; after all, W is right below us and can't escape~"
Liu You'er turned away from him and lay back down, indicating that she didn't want to engage with him.
Xuan Mo rubbed her cheek, propped her arm up, and was about to say something when suddenly, the door swung open.
"Oh no!"
As Lan'er entered, she saw Xuan Mo seemingly leaning in to kiss Liu You'er, and with a flushed face, she exclaimed, "I didn't see anything! I'm just here to deliver food. Bye!"
With that, she quickly ran out, making sure to close the door behind her.
"Bang!"
Someone was kicked to the ground.
"What are you doing?!"
Xuan Mo looked innocent.
"Oh come on, how was I supposed to know she would barge in without knocking?"
B City Base
"Director, there's a girl named Tian Weiwei who wants to see you. She says she has something important to give you."
