Mo Xier instinctively crossed her arms in front of her chest, adopting a defensive posture as her eyes scanned him up and down.
"Don't look at me like that! I can tell you, I will absolutely not do anything that tarnishes my reputation!"
She unconsciously took a few steps back, and the cautious look in her eyes made Night Star find it amusing. This woman, when clever, was like a fox, but when foolish, she was truly silly!
"I've already said I'm not interested in you, so why are you being so narcissistic?"
Faced with the man's somewhat contemptuous gaze, she couldn't help but snort lightly. "For men, as long as it's a woman, that's enough. How would I know if you might suddenly unleash your beastly nature!"
"Maybe for others, but for you? I'd rather dream about it."
Night Star's tone was filled with disdain, and that dismissive attitude genuinely made Mo Xier uncomfortable.
Stubbornly turning away, she decided not to engage with him any further. This annoying man! Who would want to bother with him? She wouldn't serve him!
"Don't worry, my request is very simple; you can definitely fulfill it." The man revealed a strange smile that sent a chill down her spine. This blockhead actually smiled! It surely couldn't be anything good!
Casting him a strange glance, she immediately asked, "So what exactly do you want me to do?"
"I haven't thought of anything yet. When I do, I'll naturally tell you. What's the rush?"
Mo Xier was nearly choked by his words; truly, the emperor is not in a hurry while the eunuchs are anxious! With that thought in mind, she boldly walked over to the table and sat down, crossing her legs in a display of confidence.
"Alright, alright, I'm not in a hurry. What do I have to be anxious about? Anyway, it's the General's residence that's in chaos."
The man, indifferent to the nonchalant attitude, frowned and sat down at the table, casually picking up the memorial in his hand to begin reviewing it.
He hadn't attended court for several days, busy with matters concerning the Old Madam, leaving him with no time to handle state affairs. The memorials regarding the war had already piled high on the table, nearly reaching above his head.
Ignoring that Mo Xier was still present, he continued to read as if the person in front of him did not exist.
Meanwhile, Mo Xier gradually slumped from her initially upright posture; within just a moment, her entire upper body was resting on the table.
Her eyes were fixed on the man before her without blinking. They say that serious men are the most handsome, and it certainly seemed true at that moment!
His slightly pursed lips and occasionally moving slender fingers, which bore slight calluses from years of sword practice, only highlighted the beauty of his strength.
With his perfect profile paired with such a serious expression, any woman who saw him would surely be captivated!
Slowly, Mo Xier found herself somewhat mesmerized; after all, such a handsome man was rare in this world. Even if he wasn't hers, it was nice to admire him for a while!
Adhering to this principle, she stared for an entire hour as if entranced.
Such intense gazes could hardly go unnoticed by Night Star. He simply buried himself in handling his documents and chose to ignore it. Once he had dealt with most of the memorials, he finally couldn't help but look up and said in a deep voice, "Have you finished looking yet?"
"No!"
The instinctive response caused him to pause his hand mid-motion, a look of helplessness on his face.
This woman, does she not know what restraint is? How could she speak so freely?
Realizing her amnesia, Mo Xier waved her hands repeatedly, her face finally showing a hint of panic. "Ugh! Enough, enough!"
After saying that, she tried to get up and leave, but her movements were quick, and the man's reaction was even quicker. Before she could take a step, he pulled her back.
"Why are you holding onto me? Let go!" She instinctively tried to break free.
"Why can't I hold onto you? Didn't you sneak a look at me as well? It's just that I acted like a gentleman while you acted like a rogue," the man said with conviction, leaving her speechless and so embarrassed that she wished she could dig a hole in the ground to hide in!
In such a situation, Mo Xier's cheeks flushed red. How could she not feel awkward when her little secret was exposed by him?
With a strong pull from the man, Mo Xier fell into his arms, and in the midst of their movement, they knocked over the pile of documents on the table.
The floor was in disarray as she hurriedly picked them up. Suddenly, a word caught her eye, and she couldn't help but softly read it aloud, "Gaochang?" Isn't that an ancient region in Xinjiang? Why would it appear here?
However, in her impression of China's five thousand years of history, there had never been a Heavenly Universe Kingdom.
Noticing the change in her expression, Night Star couldn't help but ask, "Do you know this place?"
"I don't know it; I've just heard of it," Mo Xier replied as she gathered the documents from the floor. She regained her composure, but her brows were deeply furrowed as if something weighed heavily on her mind.
"Can you tell me about this Gaochang?" After hesitating for a moment, she finally made this request to the man. If she understood more about it, perhaps she could figure out what kind of time and space she was in.
"It's a small country nearby that has been at war with us for years. It was only subdued this year after signing a ceasefire agreement."
The man's explanation was as straightforward as he was, simple and crisp, making one want to applaud, yet it also conveyed a sense of utter indifference.
His scrutinizing gaze wandered over her, and he asked in a low voice, "Could it be that your hometown is somewhere around here? Is that why you are so curious about it?"
She slowly shook her head; she was simply curious and had not expected that this place, Gaochang, resembled the Gaochang of the Tang Dynasty so closely!
A thought gradually formed in her mind: could it be that she had fallen into a parallel timeline? In this timeline, there existed an entirely different scene, yet due to certain overlapping points in time, some dynasties appeared similar?
If that were the case, when she found that intersection point, would she have a chance to return to the modern world? The thought made her inexplicably excited.
However, all of this was merely her speculation and could not be confirmed, let alone any notion of returning to the present.
Glancing hastily at the memorials, she casually asked, "Since a ceasefire agreement has been signed, why does it seem from the memorials that you are still at odds with each other? Moreover, it seems there is an issue with the internal river of Gaochang?"
The memorial in Mo Xier's hand was precisely the report from the Prime Minister to the Emperor. Gaochang had been embroiled in years of warfare; this ceasefire was supposed to be a good time for recuperation. However, unexpectedly, the internal river within the city had become polluted, and several people had fallen ill recently.
This illness spread rapidly like an infection among those who came into contact with it. Not a single doctor from the Heavenly Universe Kingdom could cure it.
Let alone the doctors within Gaochang Kingdom; everyone was running around like headless flies, unable to find a solution to the problem. It had now become a dilemma weighing heavily on everyone's minds!
Listening to his description, Mo Xier couldn't help but softly say, "Perhaps it's a plague."
Night Star looked up in surprise. "You know?"
"I'm just speculating based on what you've said; it doesn't necessarily mean that's the case." She concealed her thoughts out of guilt; for now, she didn't want others to know that she was skilled in herbs.
In an unfamiliar environment, the woman instinctively hid what she possessed, becoming increasingly fragile; perhaps only in this place could she feel safer.
Night Star no longer pressed for answers but sighed softly, "It was just a few people's illness before; I didn't expect it to turn into this."
"Is it serious?"
Nodding slightly, his brows had not relaxed since that moment. "If this illness spreads severely, the Emperor will surely prohibit all outsiders from entering, and I may have to go guard against potential chaos."
She nodded slightly, still not fully processing the situation. Once she regained her senses, she suddenly shouted, "What will I do if you leave!"
Her wide eyes were as large as bells, and their moistness made Night Star find her exceptionally cute at that moment.
Suppressing the urge to reach out and touch her, he said softly, "Of course, I'll take you with me. I can't leave you here alone."
Thinking about how chaotic the General's residence had become in just one day since he left, she feared that if he really went to Gaochang, it might take him some time to return.
The thought of her pitiful appearance that day made him feel a pang of heartache and wavering.
A smile instantly brightened Mo Xier's face as she was very pleased with his response. Proudly, she reached out to pat the top of his head. "Good! I knew you wouldn't abandon me."
However, Night Star, who had been relatively gentle, suddenly turned cold; his expression darkened further, startling Mo Xier into retracting her hand.
Their eyes met, and within his indifferent gaze lingered a hint of murderous intent. The woman instinctively took a few steps back. "W-what's wrong with you?"
"Watch your tone!"
A few words escaped from her lips, sharp and biting like the cold winter night wind.
Before she could say anything more, Night Star's gaze pierced through her, filled with a chilling intensity. "If there is a next time, you can forget about your hands."
Such heavy words left her momentarily stunned. It felt as if they had returned to that night when they first met, the air around them thick with a somber and indifferent atmosphere that made her hesitate to approach him.
Was all of this just because of a careless action on her part?
In a hurried turn, she appeared calm on the surface, but inside, a storm was brewing. This man was simply incomprehensible!
She stumbled out of the room, while Night Star's deep eyes remained fixed on her, not leaving for a moment until she disappeared from view.
How could one describe the feeling of that instant? Memories of her mother flooded back like a tide. Having never received warmth from his mother, how could he not be indifferent?
And that gesture of praise—something he had longed for after every effort in his childhood—how could that woman perform it so casually?
Having grown accustomed to solitude, he found his steps thrown off by a single woman; it was utterly illogical! His gaze deepened further, and his clenched fist tightened even more.
The night wind gently blew through, bringing a hint of coolness but failing to disperse the thoughts each of them held within.
