The woman's face was pale, as if she hadn't eaten in a long time. She held her child tightly in her arms, using all her strength.
Upon seeing the three of them, the woman's dim eyes suddenly brightened, as if she had seen a shooting star. Her steps quickened, and in no time, she reached them.
Liu Qiankun instinctively stepped in front of the two, raising his hand to stop the approaching woman. He looked serious and said, "Don't come any closer. What happened?"
"Lord Liu, please, save my child! I beg you..." The woman's expression was clearly more agitated now, but she stopped in her tracks at the man's intervention.
The woman's anxious look seemed to place all her hope on him. Liu Qiankun frowned slightly and said, "Take the child and follow me. Don't get too close."
The woman seemed to want to say something more but was intimidated by Liu Qiankun's gaze and dared not speak again, silently following behind them.
Mo Xier kept turning to look at the situation behind her. Being a woman herself and having never witnessed such a scene, she naturally felt more compassion for the mother.
The child's face was ashen, showing no signs of life. The woman stumbled as she walked; if they moved even slightly faster, she would struggle to keep up.
She tugged at Night Star's sleeve. He glanced at her with his cold eyes and then slowed his pace, ensuring he took care of those behind him.
Feeling grateful in her heart, the woman felt a bit more at ease; with him by her side, there were many fewer things for her to worry about.
Suddenly, the woman behind them let out a wail. Startled, Mo Xier quickly turned around to check. The child in the woman's arms was now barely breathing, his face so pale it was painful to look at.
"Child! Lord Liu! Please save my child!" The woman clutched her child tightly, tears streaming down her haggard face, with no clean spot visible.
However, Liu Qiankun showed no response; he merely frowned in place and said, "We are not doctors and do not understand medicine. How can we save him? It would be better to hurry back to the clinic and seek help from a doctor!"
The words sounded somewhat cold, but they were all harsh truths.
Mo Xier could no longer bear to watch. Without a second thought, she wanted to step forward to check, but was pulled back by the man beside her, signaling her not to go any further.
After hesitating for a moment, she resolutely shook off his hand and directly approached the child without any protective measures. The child's body was burning hot. He was clearly suffering from a high fever, and his lips were dry and cracked, indicating he was afflicted with the Plague.
Seeing her actions, the woman's gaze towards her instantly changed; she held onto her hands tightly while continuously expressing her gratitude.
Night Star stood silently beside them, his cold eyes devoid of any warmth, as if what lay before him was not a life but an inanimate object.
"The child's temperature is very high, and his pulse is weak. Where is the nearest place with medicinal herbs? I need to prepare some herbs for him to drink; it might save his life."
Mo Xier quickly made a decision, looking at the man with pleading eyes, hoping he could do something at this moment.
Liu Qiankun was also taken aback by her actions but quickly regained his composure. He pointed ahead and said, "There's a clinic straight ahead."
She nodded and was about to pick up the child. The woman looked so weak that it was questionable whether she could even reach the clinic herself, let alone carry another child. Since she had already made contact, she wasn't afraid of touching him a little longer!
However, before she could take a step forward, Night Star suddenly moved in front of her and swiftly took the child from her arms before she could react.
"You..."
Before she could finish her sentence, he interrupted her, "Saving the child is the priority."
Leaving Liu Qiankun behind to look after the woman, the two of them hurried towards the clinic.
The man held the child, walking ahead of her, his back steady as she gazed at him, a strange feeling stirring within her. She had initially thought him to be utterly indifferent, but at this moment, he revealed a warmth that was unexpected.
Their pace was quick; what would normally take a quarter of an hour to reach the clinic, they accomplished in mere moments.
The clinic was crowded, yet it lacked the usual clamor. During the plague, everyone appeared to be unwell, and the room was filled with the sound of persistent coughing.
Yet there were still some healthy individuals, their noses covered with white cloths, moving among the patients to help them take their medicine. The clinic had become a place of healing.
Upon their arrival, an old doctor came out to meet them, nearly fully covered, with all exposed areas wrapped in cloth as a means to prevent infection.
The old doctor stopped at a distance, his gaze filled with curiosity. It was obvious that the child had contracted the plague, yet these two appeared healthy without any protective measures—almost reckless!
"Doctor, can you help me with a prescription?" Mo Xier disregarded whether her words seemed presumptuous; at this moment, saving lives was paramount.
The old doctor frowned slightly and instructed his assistants to take the child. He said, "Even if you want to save someone, you must first protect yourself!"
After saying this, he waved his hand for them to follow him inside. She had not intended to go in; saving lives was urgent. However, thinking of the man behind her, her mind changed instantly.
She did not care about contracting the plague herself, but the man behind her was different; he was far more precious than she was. If he were to be infected by accident, she would owe more lives than she could repay!
They quickly completed the necessary disinfection procedures together and donned masks similar to those worn by others.
"Are you a doctor?" While they changed clothes, the old doctor scrutinized her intently. His weathered eyes shone like bright lanterns, seemingly able to discern all her thoughts.
Mo Xier was unafraid and boldly met the old man's gaze. She replied in a serious tone, "Although I am not a doctor, I understand some herbal medicine. I know quite a bit about this plague; if you let me try a few herbal remedies, I believe the situation here can improve."
The old man's gaze clearly held some disdain. "You may not look very old, Little Girl, but your tone is quite bold. These are lives at stake; can you just casually experiment with herbs? A slight mistake could lead to someone's death!"
"But how will you know I can't do it if you don't let me try?" Her eyes were resolute, and her hands slowly clenched at her sides.
She had studied the prescriptions carefully in modern times. For this Plague, as long as she followed the ancient prescriptions and made some improvements, she could find a solution. She had already taken a shortcut, but she couldn't explain this to anyone!
The Old Doctor didn't even turn his head and walked straight to the child he had just carried in. "Since you're here, why not help me take care of the other patients while I check on this child?"
Biting her lip, she turned to look at the man behind her. As their eyes met, she realized she couldn't discern even a hint of emotion from him.
He clearly knew she had medical skills; why was he not helping to explain now, but instead coldly watching everything unfold?
The warmth that had just begun to rise in her heart vanished instantly, and she couldn't help but smile self-deprecatingly. Did she still not understand? This man was always cold-blooded; how could he possibly speak up for her?
The Old Doctor shook his head gently as he examined the child, then set his hands down and said, "It's a bit late for this one. If you had come earlier, Old Madam might have had a way, but now it seems there's nothing we can do."
As soon as his words fell, Liu Qiankun entered with a woman. Upon hearing the doctor's words, the woman’s legs went weak, and she collapsed to the ground, disbelief filling her eyes.
"No! It can't be! My child!" Tears streaming down her face, she tried to reach her child but couldn't move an inch.
Mo Xier was equally shocked. Just moments ago on their way here, the child had clearly been salvageable; how could it be that in such a short time under this doctor's care, there was no hope?
Taking a few deep breaths to steady herself and calm her racing heart, she stepped forward with clenched fists. While examining the child's symptoms, she comforted the woman, saying, "It's okay. Don't worry; I will definitely save your child!"
Her tone was heavy yet resolute.
However, as soon as she finished speaking, the Old Doctor jumped up and loudly accused her, "Little Girl, having a mouth doesn't mean you can say whatever you want. You must take responsibility for your words. This child is clearly beyond saving; how could you possibly bring him back!"
"Whether he can be saved or not will be determined by the outcome!" As if out of spite, her last respect for the old man vanished with his words.
Seemingly to prove a point, her actions were exceptionally decisive, without any hesitation. After carefully taking the child's pulse, she quickly gathered herbs and prepared medicine based on the prescription she remembered.
The Old Doctor had already deemed the child hopeless and naturally would not waste time here, busying himself with other patients, leaving only the child's mother by his side.
The woman tightly held her child's hand, as if trying to pull him back from the brink of death. Her eyes remained fixed on him, fearing that if she blinked, he would disappear.
After all, traditional Chinese medicine takes time to show effects. During this period, she stayed close to the child alongside his mother, adjusting the prescription according to his condition.
As dawn broke the next day, the child, who had been nestled in his mother's arms without moving, suddenly spoke up.
"Mom, I'm hungry..." The simple three words, though hoarse and childish, caused everyone present to be taken aback!
Mo Xier, who had been dozing off, nearly jumped off her stool. He can talk! He’s alive! This was the first time she felt proud of her knowledge being able to save someone!
"Wait a moment; I'll go get something to eat!" Without caring whether she had eaten herself, she hurried to the back kitchen of the clinic and prepared some light food. Watching the mother feed it to her child bit by bit calmed her heart.
Seeing this situation for the first time in days brought a smile to her face. The Old Doctor heard about what was happening and rushed over without delay, exclaiming that it was impossible!
