Upon arriving at Ru Er's room, the woman lying in bed immediately sat up upon hearing the noise, her eyes filled with hopeful light, her spirits much improved.
Stopping Ru Er from bowing, Night Star gently asked, "How do you feel? Does your head still hurt?" As he approached the bedside, it was the first time he spoke to her in such a soft tone.
Although Ru Er was lying in bed, from his perspective, he could still see the carefully applied powder on her face. He could easily tell that she was trying to make herself look more pitiful.
With tears welling in her eyes, she nodded gratefully and said, "I feel much better now. Thank you for coming to see me so late, Young Master."
"You were injured, so naturally I must take care of you. I would do this for anyone," he replied.
His gaze lingered on her cheeks as he slightly turned his head, causing Ru Er to unconsciously lower her own head and shyly ask, "Young Master, what are you looking at? It's making me feel quite embarrassed."
"I was thinking that Ru Er is actually quite beautiful; why didn't I notice it before?" His teasing words were in stark contrast to his usual cold demeanor, creating a significant contrast when spoken by him.
At that moment, Ru Er was completely captivated, her mind seemingly unable to think clearly. She didn't even consider that such words would not typically come from a man like him.
Her expression grew increasingly bashful as she instinctively tightened her grip on the blanket. The candlelight in the room was dim, and she wore a pink garment with two buttons undone, revealing her delicate collarbone.
If one were to look down a little further, they might even catch a glimpse of her almost ethereal skin, which was exceptionally enchanting. A sense of ambiguity slowly arose.
"Perhaps... it's because the young lady is too beautiful that the Young Master has never noticed me before," she said softly, her words warm like spring. Gathering her courage to meet his gaze, she found herself staring into his ice-cold eyes.
The flirtatious atmosphere in the room dissipated instantly. With the window slightly open, a breeze flowed through the gap and blew away the hint of ambiguity in her heart.
Realizing something was off, she quickly regained her composure, lowered her gaze, and cleared her throat a few times before nervously saying, "Young Master, I didn't mean it that way. Perhaps my head was knocked around too much; if I said anything wrong, please don't be angry."
Her fearful and cautious demeanor made her appear even more endearing as she pretended to be a fragile woman.
His somewhat rough hand covered her slightly trembling body. Through the thin fabric, she could feel his warmth—not scorching but rather cool, much like his eyes.
He spoke softly: "Don't be afraid; I won't punish you. Just rest well. If you feel any discomfort, call for the doctor immediately."
She nodded slightly; her initial fear eased a bit but she dared not let her guard down again. It wasn't until he closed the door behind him that she finally allowed herself to slowly lift her head.
Beneath the exquisite makeup, the original expression was deeply concealed by thick layers of powder. Ru Er's expression appeared somewhat stiff, yet her eyes held a hint of pride and excitement.
However, as if afraid of being discovered, that look only flashed for a moment before vanishing completely, never to be seen again.
Mo Xier had not been seen for three days, and Night Star had come for three days, but Ru Er's carelessness had only shown itself once and had not reappeared since.
On this day, Ru Er was serving Night Star tea. The blows to her head were not too severe; after resting for two days, she felt better and was unwilling to lie in bed any longer. She insisted on getting up to take care of him.
Mo Xier did not object and silently acquiesced. Her delicate hands were graceful today; she had dressed carefully, with her hair adorned with several decorative ornaments that set her apart from others.
Following her fair hands downwards, her lightly made-up face glowed even more tenderly under the sunlight, as if it could drip with water. If it were an ordinary man, he would surely be captivated by her beauty, unable to think of anything else.
"Young Master, please have some tea and try the Longjing I brewed for you." The fragrant tea aroma slowly wafted from her movements; it was indeed good tea.
Gently swirling the teacup in his hand, his gaze darkened slightly as he suddenly asked, "Has your injury healed?"
The question came unexpectedly, leaving her momentarily stunned. She instinctively replied, "Yes."
Setting down the teacup, the exquisite porcelain clinked against the marble table with a crisp sound. "It has been three days since you woke up, yet why have you not inquired about Mo Xier at all during these three days? Did you not come all this way just to follow her?"
Ru Er's heart sank! Her expression nearly faltered, but fortunately, she regained her composure in time; however, her smile had already frozen in place.
"I am here to serve the young lady as you ordered; naturally, I am worried. But I know you must be even more concerned. I feared that bringing it up might upset you."
This reasoning sounded plausible enough, and combined with her pitiful expression, it almost compelled one to believe that she was speaking from the heart.
However, his gaze remained cold and silent. Suddenly standing up, he grabbed her arm forcefully and compelled her to meet his eyes. His icy gaze carried a murderous intent, like a demon from hell filled with malevolent energy.
Her eyes were filled with fear and terror; her body trembled uncontrollably due to his excessive closeness. She stammered as she tried to speak but found herself unable to make any sound despite several attempts.
"Do you know what I hate most in life? It is being deceived by others."
Ru Er's resolve remained relatively firm. Even under such intimidation, although she felt weak in the knees and struggled to stand, she still shook her head to indicate that she was telling the truth and had never deceived him.
Loosening her grip slightly, Ru Er broke free the next moment, continuously retreating until she knelt on the ground. "Young Master, I don't know what I did wrong, but please do not doubt me. If it was truly my doing, why would I be injured as well?"
She was not foolish; the man's intentions were evident, and with a little speculation, she could find the answer. Quick to react, she immediately sought to clarify her innocence, tears unable to be held back as they fell to the ground.
Her body trembled slightly, as if still trapped in the fear of moments ago.
After a brief silence, Night Star finally spoke, "I do not doubt you; I am merely curious. You need not be so afraid; I believe you are not responsible."
His tone softened slightly, yet there was no hint of trust in his cold words.
He waved his hand at the woman on the ground and continued, "From now on, you can stay in the house peacefully. If Miss Mo does not return, you need not serve anymore. Once this matter is resolved, I will take you back to the General's residence."
Though it sounded like a promise, it gave Ru Er endless hope. Her expression brightened significantly as she bowed her head and said, "I am originally a servant of the General's residence; wherever the General is, that is where I belong."
"Leave for now. If there is nothing else in the future, you need not come to serve."
Understanding the situation, she withdrew. Just as her figure disappeared at the gate of the courtyard, a figure in black appeared, looking somewhat haggard and travel-worn.
Night Star asked without turning around, "Have you found out anything?"
"I have," came the hoarse and weary voice from the figure in black. "I heard that Gaochang's plague has suddenly been brought under control. After some inquiries, it seems that Gaochang has obtained a remedy for the plague that is quite similar to what Miss Mo had before."
"Gaochang?" His tone rose slightly with a hint of confusion.
Although Yonghe City was close to Gaochang, they were distinctly separated by geography. The relationship between the two nations had been tense over recent years; aside from merchants who could come and go freely, other civilians needed special passes to enter or exit.
If she truly entered Gaochang, there was only one possibility: she had been taken by someone of high status there. Reflecting on Ru Er again made him wonder how she could possibly collude with someone from Gaochang.
Puzzled and furrowing his brows tighter, he remained concerned for the woman's safety. "How is she? Is she injured?"
"According to reports from spies within the city, Miss Mo seems to be doing quite well—living in luxury and comfort—probably much better than here," replied the figure in black with a hint of sarcasm. "She likely has no thoughts of returning now, making you worry for her in vain."
With this confirmed news, Night Star's anxiety over her safety finally eased. He lowered his gaze slightly and said, "Find a way to contact her; we cannot let her stay in Gaochang for long."
"Understood, I will have someone get close to her as soon as possible."
Over here, Night Star was thinking of ways to approach her, while on the other side, Mo Xier was naturally anxious to contact the man but had not found an opportunity.
Having stayed in this courtyard for three days, Mu Li visited her almost three times a day. She didn't even have a chance to leave the courtyard, like a canary kept in a cage, with no freedom at all.
Bored, she rested her chin on her hand and looked out the window. The Crabapple trees in the courtyard were blooming more vibrantly, almost making it impossible for her to look away.
"I see you've been staring at those Crabapple trees for many days now. Are they really that beautiful?"
When Mu Li entered, this was the scene he saw. He had noticed it every time he came over these past few days, which made him wonder what was so special about those few trees.
She did not turn around and said directly, "I'm just wondering when I can leave this dreadful place!"
Her straightforwardness clearly stunned Mu Li; his expression stiffened slightly, but unfortunately, she had her back to him and did not see it.
Not hearing a response from behind her, she turned around sharply, her bright eyes filled with questions. "Is the prescription I gave you ineffective?"
The man shook his head slightly. She continued to ask, "Then why haven't you let me go yet?"
A smile slowly crept onto Mu Li's lips as he shook his head gently. "The timing isn't right yet; naturally, I can't let you go."
