"He going personally is his own business; how can I influence that?" With a light remark, she pretended to casually gaze at Ru Er and softly said, "But you seem to have been paying more attention to him since you arrived here."
Ru Er's expression became somewhat awkward as she continuously brushed her long hair, softly replying, "Miss is joking. I am just a servant under the young master; it is only natural to care a bit more about him."
Such a clever response instantly pushed the question far away. Mo Xier didn't mind and merely nodded, playing with the ornament in her hand while allowing Ru Er to help her style her hair.
"Miss, the plague in the city has mostly subsided. I wonder when the young master plans to return to the capital?"
The action of playing with the ornaments suddenly halted, and she raised her eyes slightly to look at Ru Er. "How about we don't go back this time? Staying in Yonghe City is much more pleasant than in the capital!" Her tone was tentative, and her eyes sparkled with mischief.
Sure enough, Ru Er's expression changed repeatedly as she looked at her with hesitation. "Miss, this place is close to Gaochang. If war breaks out, this will be the first area affected. How can it compare to the capital?"
The implication was clear: she did not want to stay here. Raising an eyebrow slightly, Mo Xier continued, "But this place has beautiful mountains and clear waters. Gaochang won't attack so soon. Can't we enjoy life here for a while before moving elsewhere?"
Ru Er's face grew increasingly difficult to read, as if she had struggled for a long time before forcing a smile. "As long as you are happy, Miss, I will naturally be willing to stay wherever you are."
Receiving such a statement made Mo Xier feel strange, as if she were forcing Ru Er into something.
Shaking her head lightly, she softly said, "I won’t make you stay here with me. The date for returning to the capital has already been set for Night Star; prepare yourself for three days from now."
Upon hearing this, Ru Er's previously gloomy face instantly lit up with joy, even her smile becoming hard to suppress. She nodded repeatedly and said with a grin, "I'll go pack right away!"
Her exuberant demeanor was quite different from her earlier despondency.
After sending Ru Er away, Mo Xier immediately went to find the man. Just then, she happened upon him discussing matters with Liu Qiankun and was about to wait outside.
Just as Step turned back, his voice came from inside the room. "You’ve already come in; why go back out?"
With a cheerful smile, she stepped into the room and stuck out her tongue playfully. "I was afraid of interrupting your discussion!" At the same time, she smiled and nodded at Liu Qiankun.
Since the plague had been brought under control, Lord Liu had become increasingly polite towards her. Initially, he thought Night General had brought a woman over for his own desires, but upon discovering that she was a divine healer, all his previous disdain vanished instantly; even his gaze towards her became respectful.
"I am discussing the matter of returning to the capital with Lord Liu. You can listen in if you like."
His calm words took Mo Xier by surprise. When did this wooden fellow start speaking like this? Turning to Liu Qiankun, she asked, "Is Lord Liu also returning to the capital?"
"I will need to stay here for a little while longer. I will return only after everything returns to normal. You and Night General should head back first; it will be good to give the Emperor an explanation."
Liu Qiankun explained in detail, and as she listened, she nodded, turning her gaze back to the man, her eyes seemingly hiding something.
Both of them preferred to resolve matters quickly, so it didn't take long for them to finalize everything. As Lord Liu stepped out, he turned back and asked, "Why did you come over so early today?"
"Ru Er is indeed problematic." She briefly recounted their conversation from the morning. The man's brows furrowed slightly, his expression turning somewhat unfriendly.
"What do you think she wants to return to the capital for?" She was puzzled, her beautiful brows nearly knitting together.
He remained unperturbed and replied, "We will know when the time comes. There's no need to get tangled up in it now; it's just a waste of your thoughts."
Mo Xier was momentarily speechless and shot him a glare before getting up to leave. Talking to this wooden block was simply a waste of time!
Suddenly recalling their previous agreement, she stopped and looked at him with a scrutinizing gaze, asking, "Can we visit Aunt Liu while we're in the capital?"
Her eyes were filled with hopeful anticipation, making it hard for anyone to refuse. He unconsciously nodded slightly; her smile was like the spring sun, illuminating the entire room with warmth.
"Then I'll have someone prepare some things to bring to Aunt Liu. She will surely be very happy! It has been a long time since we last saw her; I wonder how her health is?"
As she chattered on her way out, Ru Er's troubles seemed to have been cast aside. However, the man could not be as carefree; his deep-set eyes grew darker.
Mu Li would not be so easily dealt with. Having suffered this time, he feared that next time it would come back double.
Old Madam would not simply accept him bringing her back either. He had originally wanted a reason for both of them to cool down, but after the kidnapping incident, he had calmed down; Old Madam would likely not let things rest so easily!
That night, the clinic was as silent as if no one were there. The crescent moon hung in the sky, and against the dark night curtain, stars were barely visible.
In the quiet courtyard, a figure swiftly slipped in. Judging by the somewhat clumsy footsteps, it was clear that the newcomer did not possess any martial skills. However, the steps were light, suggesting that it was a woman.
The door was cautiously pushed open from the outside. The person looked around, and after confirming that no one was present, she stepped into the room.
Inside was even darker than the courtyard. The tightly shut doors and windows allowed not a sliver of light to enter; even the moonlight from outside could not seep in, creating an atmosphere that was somewhat terrifying.
Step by step, she moved forward, careful and cautious. As she approached the bed, a smile finally appeared on her face, albeit somewhat twisted! She drew a dagger from behind her back and without any hesitation, struck down!
However, instead of hearing the anticipated muffled groan, there was only a soft thud as her strike met no resistance at all! In panic, she threw back the covers, only to find no trace of anyone on the bed—just a pillow!
In the darkness, the intruder instantly became flustered and attempted to retreat. Yet, there was nowhere for her to go! The dimly lit room suddenly brightened with a Bright Lantern, illuminating everything as if it were daytime, making it difficult for her to open her eyes.
The door was violently pushed open from the outside with a loud crash. The previously empty room was now filled with people, countless pairs of eyes fixated on her every move.
Mo Xier and Night Star entered from outside and were taken aback upon seeing Ru Er standing inside with a dagger. The astonishment in their hearts could hardly be expressed in words.
Ru Er was in a state of utter panic; upon seeing Mo Xier at the doorway, she dared not meet her gaze directly!
"Do you know what you are doing?" Mo Xier asked, staring at her motionless. Her eyes were filled with surprise and a hint of pain; she had never imagined that someone so close to her would attempt such a vicious act!
"Miss... I..." Ru Er stammered in a flurry of confusion, unsure of what to say.
"You wanted to kill me." It wasn't a question; her calm statement pierced Ru Er's heart like a sharp knife, causing blood to flow instantly.
In a panic, Ru Er dropped the dagger. It clattered to the floor with a crisp sound in the dead of night. Her face was filled with terror. She wanted to step forward but retreated several steps as Mo Xier's cold gaze made her intentions clear.
With calm eyes fixed on her, Mo Xier felt as if her heart had turned to ashes. "So you came into my room at night with a dagger and even lit calming incense to ensure I wouldn't wake up—this isn't an intention to kill?"
Though she already had an answer, she continued to question Ru Er. Deep down, she knew that the answer she sought would never come but still wanted to give her a chance.
"Why did you do this?"
Seeing that she had no more chances, Ru Er gave up her last struggle and collapsed to the ground, sobbing without being able to speak.
"Speak! Why are you doing this?" The rationality in her heart vanished, replaced by anger.
Night Star noticed that the situation was not right and waved his hand to dismiss the people in the room, leaving only three of them inside. The atmosphere began to turn somewhat strange.
The woman stepped forward, firmly grasping Ru Er's chin, and asked sharply, "I treated you well when you were in the General's residence! Why are you doing this? First, you kidnapped me! Now you want to assassinate me! What grudge do I have against you that makes you treat me this way?"
If she hadn't sensed the change in the fragrance of the room before going to sleep tonight, she would have been caught off guard. After Ru Er left, she immediately went to find Night Star to confirm whether she would be the one dead in bed tonight.
The feeling of betrayal swept over her like a nightmare, almost driving her to madness. The woman kneeling on the ground remained silent like a mute, only softly sobbing, evoking immense pity.
"Why aren't you speaking?"
"It is this servant who has wronged you, Miss. It is too late to say anything now. If you hold a grudge, then just kill me!" Ru Er bowed deeply, her gaze filled with determination.
"I only ask why you are doing this!"
"There are reasons known only to me; you do not need to know." Slowly raising her head, she met her gaze for the first time that night and softly said, "You must understand that as long as you stay by Young Master’s side for even a day, people like me will never disappear!"
Ru Er suddenly chuckled lightly; her previous fear gradually faded away as she gently said, "I have long wondered when I would be discovered; I just didn't expect it to come so soon."
"She wants to commit suicide!" The man reacted first, grabbing her chin in an attempt to stop her actions, but how could he be faster than what was happening in her mouth?
