Old Madam's face instantly turned pale. Night Star had never spoken to her like this before, and now he dared to confront her for a woman!
"What do you mean by this? Are you blaming me for reporting this matter to the Emperor?"
He remained silent, but the coldness in his eyes clearly expressed his attitude.
With a cold snort, Old Madam smiled and said, "This matter was not reported to the Emperor by me, so you need not blame me! If it weren't for that Demoness being so ostentatious, how could such an incident occur?"
The man's eyes were filled with suspicion. Upon hearing the Emperor's summons, he hadn't thought much of it and instinctively believed it was Old Madam who had informed on him. Now, hearing her words, could it be that he was mistaken?
"The Plague of the Times, she can cure it all by herself; who wouldn't be curious about such a person?"
Old Madam's words hit the mark, exposing the truth. The smile on her face grew increasingly strange. "If you want people not to know, you must do nothing. With such high-profile behavior, isn't she just eager to enter the palace?"
She reached out to help the man who was kneeling on the ground. Her smile was filled with oddity, and the previous coldness in her eyes was nowhere to be seen as she softly said, "This Demoness would never be content staying by your side as a general; she must have long been prepared to meet the Sovereign!"
Old Madam twirled the Buddhist beads in her hand, appearing calm and collected. The pride in her gaze was unmasked, fully exposed before him.
"How do you know whether she genuinely wants to treat the Plague or is simply trying to attract the Sovereign's attention? My foolish son, don't let yourself be used without even realizing it!"
Her words were sharp yet seemingly simple, but they pointed directly at Mo Xier, revealing her schemes at every turn.
The man's expression grew heavier. Although he hadn't spent much time with Mo Xier, her heart seemed as transparent as glass; all her thoughts were written on her face, let alone hiding any schemes.
Old Madam's words seemed intended to sow discord.
Thinking of this made his heart grow colder. What reason could there be for a mother not wanting her son to succeed but instead wishing for him to be a puppet who obeys her every command?
Taking a few steps back to create some distance from Old Madam, the man's emotions visibly returned to a calm state. He respectfully bowed and spoke softly, "I was rude just now; I hope Mother will not be angry."
After sizing him up for a moment, she slowly said, "The day you deal with that Demoness will be the day your mother is happy!"
His gaze dropped even lower, but he did not directly answer her question. Instead, he said, "I still need to prepare for matters concerning the palace; I will take my leave now. Mother should rest well; today I have disturbed you." With that, he turned and left the courtyard.
Watching him leave, Old Madam stood in the courtyard until she could no longer see his figure before slowly walking back inside.
Rong Mama quickly approached, her eyes filled with concern. "Old Madam, why don't you keep that Demoness in the manor and prevent her from meeting Sovereign? This way, we can find a reason for her to meet Yama!"
Old Madam shook her head cryptically, putting down the Buddhist beads in her hand. The calmness in her eyes was nowhere to be seen.
"It’s better for the Emperor to take action than for me to do it myself. As long as we use some strategy, I can preserve the mother-son bond while dealing with that Demoness. Why not take advantage of such a good opportunity?"
Rong Mama nodded, beginning to understand Old Madam's intentions.
Jiang Yu's eyes reflected a gloomy aura as her hands gradually clenched. "As long as he is not happy, that's enough!"
Rong Mama couldn't help but feel intimidated by such a gaze. She carefully brewed a cup of tea for her and softly said, "I came back this time but didn't see Ru Er. I wonder where she has gone."
Old Madam seemed to have known all along. She set down the Buddhist beads and slowly sipped her tea before casually saying, "It doesn't matter where she has gone; she's just a maid after all. Are there not enough maids in the General's Manor?"
"Of course not, it's just that I find it strange. That girl used to be inseparable from the Demoness, and now she suddenly disappears; it truly raises questions."
Raising her eyebrows slightly, she set down her teacup and said, "Don't worry about those useless matters. I need you to help me with something. If it succeeds, there will naturally be benefits for you."
Upon hearing there would be benefits, Rong Mama's eyes instantly lit up. She smiled and said, "Madam, you jest! I've been by your side for so many years; don't you know me? As long as it's what you say, I will dedicate myself wholeheartedly!"
After giving her instructions, Rong Mama left the courtyard to make arrangements.
Turning the Buddhist beads in her hand, Old Madam's eyes were full of smiles. Thinking of Rong Mama's earlier words made her heart feel immensely joyful. How could someone who was dead appear beside the Demoness?
That day Ru Er had barely escaped death and returned to the General's Manor, yet no one knew that if she hadn't encountered Old Madam and been threatened with her family's lives—tempted with becoming Night Star's concubine if she succeeded—how would that woman have helped her?
She was simply too useless; that Demoness remained unscathed while she ended up dead!
Just a trivial pawn; Old Madam didn't care at all. If she died, so be it—no one would know that Ru Er's demise was at her instruction!
When Night Star headed towards Old Madam's courtyard, his people had already arrived at Mo Xier's courtyard and began helping her get ready.
She hadn't taken the time to tidy herself up in a long while, and after enduring a series of setbacks, her complexion appeared somewhat pale, lacking vitality.
With her gaze slightly lowered, she dared not look directly at the person behind her. Each time she did, she would think of Ru Er; the harmonious moments they once shared were long gone. About half an hour later, she had organized everything and put on the clothes the man had prepared for her.
Just as she was admiring herself in the mirror, the man walked in from outside. Their eyes met in the reflection of the mirror. Even though the blurred image made it hard to see clearly, she could still sense the surprise emanating from his eyes.
She slightly curled her lips and offered a gentle smile. Even she was astonished by the person looking back at her in the mirror; how much more so for others?
The woman in the mirror had exquisite makeup, with a light dusting of powder covering her weary face. Her lively eyes sparkled like stars, and her slightly raised brows added a touch of boldness.
However, her petite nose instantly made her appear much gentler. Her skin was as white as snow, and her crimson lips were naturally alluring. The two contrasting qualities that shouldn't coexist blended perfectly on her!
Her Azure Silk hair was neatly styled at the back of her head, adorned with pearls and jade, adding to her elegance. The light pink dress chosen by the man flowed down with a long hemline, making her look even more charming.
Knowing that she looked good, she never expected that after tidying up, she would look this stunning! Meeting the man's gaze made her feel shy; being stared at like this made her uncomfortable.
Hesitantly taking a few steps forward, she softly asked, "Is this okay?"
Was it just okay? It was simply eye-catching!
However, Night Star's expression remained calm. After the initial astonishment faded, his brows furrowed tighter. If she went to the palace looking like this, wouldn't it attract too much attention?
Without saying a word, he grabbed the woman's hand and almost forcefully pressed her back into the chair, instructing in a low voice, "No need to look so good; come as ugly as you can."
Upon hearing this, both Mo Xier and even the maids in the room were stunned.
Traditionally, women were supposed to look their best; who would want to appear ugly? Moreover, she was already so beautiful! It would be a shame not to dress up properly. The maids stood there dumbfounded, unsure of what to do.
With a smile, she pushed away the person behind her and stood up gracefully, saying, "This is fine; I think it looks good enough without any changes."
The man's expression darkened slightly as he suddenly recalled what Old Madam had said to him earlier. He felt an uncomfortable sensation rise within him.
Jiang Yu's words had such an effect; they seemed casual when spoken but quickly took root in his heart like a seed, resurfacing in his thoughts from time to time.
Standing in front of him, Mo Xier's smile became increasingly confident. "This version of me won't embarrass you. Do you want everyone in the Heavenly Universe Kingdom to know that the Night General brought a plain woman into the palace?"
Furrowing her brows, she seemed to think of something and then shook her head, laughing as she said, "It's much better if the Night General brings in a stunning beauty instead!"
With a hint of jest, this was the first time in many days that she spoke so lightly. All her doubts dissipated with her words, and a part of her heart began to melt away.
"Since that's settled, let's go. We shouldn't keep the Emperor waiting too long."
She stepped forward slowly, following behind the man. As expected, they attracted different gazes wherever they went, and the attention made her feel somewhat uneasy.
Once they boarded the carriage, shutting out the outside world, she finally let out a sigh of relief.
The distance from the General's residence to the palace wasn't too far; the carriage swayed and stopped after about a moment. Taking advantage of this time, Night Star briefly explained some of the rules she needed to follow within the palace.
She listened attentively, afraid of missing anything. After all, this wasn't modern times; if she accidentally offended someone in the palace, she might not even know how she met her end! As the carriage came to a stop and she held onto his hand to get down, her heart began to tighten.
Before her stood the majestic palace walls, towering and seemingly endless. The bright red walls reflected a heavy sense of history under the sunlight.
The solemn atmosphere made her instinctively straighten her back, and her relaxed expression gradually turned serious. Her heartbeat quickened, and she unconsciously tightened her grip on the man's arm, all reflecting her nervousness.
"Don't worry; just relax," Night Star said softly, lowering his head slightly. His deep voice whispered in her ear like a comforting spring breeze!
