Night Star stopped in her tracks and turned to look at the person behind her, her eyes filled with silence, yet she remained silent.
She felt puzzled and voiced her thoughts directly, "Aren't you not on good terms with Old Madam? Why do you still seem so worried about her?"
The man's expression grew heavier as he stepped closer, his deep eyes fixed on hers. He spoke softly, "Our relationship may seem distant to you, but no matter what, she is my mother, and I need to respect her!"
Mo Xier listened in a daze; she had never seen this emotional side of the man before and felt as if what she heard was merely an illusion.
Seeing her silent demeanor, the man continued, "I know you don't have a good impression of my mother, but I still hope you can respect her and refrain from arguing."
"The reason I stopped you today is because of this."
She raised her eyebrows slightly, a knowing smile appearing on her face. She nodded and said with a smile, "I understand. No matter how angry I get in the future, I'll hold it in."
Then she turned away, not wanting to make too much eye contact with the man and not lingering any longer, she walked straight ahead.
Night Star swayed slightly as he followed behind her, his gaze fixed on her, but Mo Xier walking ahead couldn't see his expression at all.
Upon returning to the house and noticing the man still following her, she looked at him in surprise. "Why are you still here?"
Her eyes were filled with astonishment; the man's gaze mirrored hers. He shrugged and replied, "If I'm not here, where else could I be?"
"Don't you have political affairs to attend to today? Why are you so free?"
He leisurely sat at the table, one hand resting on it, his face calm. After adjusting his clothes, he casually said, "Didn't you promise to have breakfast with me yesterday? Are you going back on your word?"
Mo Xier suddenly choked, shot him a glance, and boldly sat down beside him, calmly saying, "Do I look like that kind of person?"
After speaking, she waved her hand to call Xinrong and instructed, "Have the kitchen serve breakfast. Your young master will have breakfast here."
The maid stood frozen in place, looking at the two sitting across from each other, feeling somewhat awkward.
"What are you standing there for? Hurry up!" she commanded in a low voice. Only then did Xinrong react, turning around in a fluster and quickly entering the Small Kitchen behind the room.
According to the woman's habit, there were no other servants in the room besides Xinrong.
Once Xinrong left, only the two of them remained in the room, sitting opposite each other in silence, and the atmosphere began to grow awkward.
Mo Xier kept stroking the crimson on her nails, her eyes shining with satisfaction. If it weren't for what happened yesterday, she wouldn't have known that ancient nails could look this beautiful.
After all, being a woman, who doesn't love beauty? It's just that she had never had the time to understand these things before. Now that she did, she couldn't help but be enamored.
The atmosphere was heavy, and she had no intention of speaking. She kept her head down as if studying her nails very carefully, while Night Star's deep gaze remained fixed on her, unmoving as if he wanted to see through her completely.
She could naturally feel such scrutiny but was not prepared to respond. At this moment, aside from necessary conversation, she didn't want to say another word to the man.
With no one else in the room, he unabashedly continued to stare at her with a burning gaze that showed no signs of concealment.
When Xinrong entered with breakfast, she was met with a somewhat strange scene: her young master was staring at the girl without blinking, like a leopard ready to pounce on its prey, waiting for the right moment to strike without giving her a chance to escape.
Feeling awkward as she knocked and entered, both of their gazes instantly focused on her. Being timid by nature, she stuttered as she spoke, "M-Master, I've brought breakfast. You should eat quickly; after all this time you must be hungry."
After finishing her words, she didn't even dare to lift her head. Once she served all the dishes, she hurriedly retreated from the room, leaving it to the two of them.
After the food arrived, the atmosphere became less awkward. Mo Xier directly picked up the chopsticks on the table, but before she could start eating, the man's hand was already quicker than hers, placing a piece of Osmanthus Cake into her bowl.
Surprised, she raised her eyes, and her outstretched chopsticks paused in mid-air before being retracted.
"Don't you like this? I had the kitchen make it especially for you. Try it and see if it's good," he said with an expressionless face, as if serving her food was the most ordinary thing in the world.
Mo Xier silently lowered her head, picked up a piece, and took a bite, savoring the sweet flavor.
The food from the General's residence was comparable to that made by the imperial chefs in the palace. Since Night Star personally ordered it to be made, the chef put in great effort to make it delicious. To her, it was the best she had ever tasted!
At the moment she bit into it, her mouth was filled with a sweet taste, followed by a fragrant aroma wafting up. With her eyes slightly closed, she felt as if she were surrounded by osmanthus flowers, able to smell their rich fragrance.
Seeing that she had not responded for a long time, Night Star felt a bit anxious. He had to admit that he had asked the kitchen to prepare these dishes with the intention of pleasing her. He knew she was still angry and didn't know how to coax her; he could only try his best to give her what she wanted.
"Why aren't you speaking? Is it not good? If it's not good, then don't eat it. I can have the kitchen make something else," he said as he reached for her Osmanthus Cake.
He had always known that he was taciturn, but he had never seen himself so nervous and chatty because of a woman, even going so far as to do these thoughtful things. If this had happened before, she would have probably laughed happily by now; but at this moment, she only found it ridiculous.
If all harm could be compensated after it was done, there wouldn't be so many people missing out in this world.
Just as his chopsticks reached for it, Mo Xier's chopsticks struck them back down with a protective look in her eyes.
"You..." Not understanding her actions, he felt somewhat baffled. "If it's not good, then don't eat it. Why force yourself?"
"Who said it's not good?" She lowered her head and said no more as she finished all the cake in her bowl.
Night Star felt a surge of excitement watching her. Did this mean that she had already forgiven him?
Thinking of this, a hint of an almost imperceptible smile appeared on his usually indifferent face, and he began to occasionally serve her some food. The way he cared for her would surely leave the servants of the General's residence dumbfounded.
Their young master had always been the one to be served by others! When had he ever served someone else?
During breakfast, although the two did not say much and the atmosphere was not particularly good, his mood was clearly much better, with a slight upward curve at the corners of his mouth that could be noticed if one looked closely.
"Is there anywhere you want to go? I happen to have some free time today, and I can take you to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Kyoto," he said. Although it started as a question, by the end it sounded more like a command to Mo Xier.
With her gaze slightly lowered, from Night Star's perspective, all he could see were her long eyelashes hanging down, completely obscuring the expression in her eyes.
"The weather outside is really nice, and it's already spring now; it's starting to warm up. It's not as cold as before, making it a perfect time for an outing."
At that moment, Night Star seemed like a tour guide promoting travel packages, while she was merely a customer listening intently to his praises about how wonderful the outside world was.
While the man spoke enthusiastically, Mo Xier remained calm inside and was not swayed by his words. After he finished speaking, she remained silent for a long time before saying in a deep voice, "You really don't need to treat me this way."
Her words silenced him completely. The caring expression on his face froze slightly as he furrowed his brows and replied in a low voice, "What do you mean? I don't understand."
"Night Star, you know exactly what I mean!" She suddenly raised her gaze and met his eyes directly without a trace of fear.
"You deceived me and did not tell me the truth. You clearly knew me before but chose to hide it. You just wanted to keep me by your side, right? Now that I'm here, why do you need to flatter me like this? Do you want me to fall for you again so you can continue to toy with me? Let me tell you! That's impossible!"
Her firm words filled the room with silence. Night Star stared at her in shock, seemingly not expecting her to say such things.
"Stop doing these things just to please me; it only makes me feel disgusted! What I like to eat or do is my own business and has nothing to do with you!"
"Since I learned the truth about everything, our relationship has reverted back to a transactional one with no other possibilities. Don't you understand? Or do you think that by pleasing me now, after I help you finish these things, I will willingly stay?"
One rhetorical question after another pierced the man's heart like sharp knives, each one causing the softest part of his heart to bleed profusely from her words.
"Night Star, stop making me sick! I'm begging you!"
As the last words fell, a loud crash echoed through the room as the dishes on the table were knocked to the ground by the man's hand. Outside, Xinrong was startled and immediately opened the door.
"What happened? What's going on?" Before she could finish her sentence, she was met with Night Star's furious gaze.
"Get out!" A simple word, yet it concealed the man's boundless rage. Xinrong stumbled back, nearly falling at the doorway, realizing just how wrong it was for her to be there.
She quickly turned and left, shutting the door tightly behind her. No matter how loud the commotion inside was, she pretended not to hear anything. Her body trembled as she could only plead that nothing had happened to the girl inside.
In contrast to his fury, Mo Xier remained calm, as if she had anticipated what was unfolding and found it hardly surprising. She met the man's gaze with indifference.
"Why take your anger out on these inanimate objects? It only makes people laugh at Night General for being unreasonable." Her light words dripped with sarcasm, further igniting the man's fury.
Night Star had initially wanted to get along with her, but this woman had a knack for saying things that infuriated him! He was merely expressing concern for her; why did she have to be so cold and ignore his care?
"I think Miss Liu really likes you. Why not try accepting her? Perhaps you just haven't noticed her good qualities." Seemingly oblivious to the anger in his eyes, Mo Xier's words were laced with more mockery.
A slow smile crept across her lips, but to the man, it was nothing more than a further insult.
