With a single remark, Xinrong found himself unable to refute it, staring blankly at her with his mouth slightly open, on the verge of tears.
Seeing her expression, the smile on Mo Xier's face grew even wider.
She turned to meet Night Star's gaze directly, expecting him to react like her, but instead, she saw a hint of amusement in his eyes.
Her anger flared up instantly; she had thought her words were quite confident, but now she felt ridiculed! Was what she said really that funny? How could he show such an expression!
"What are you laughing at? Is it really that funny?" She glared at him fiercely, trying to sound more assertive.
To her surprise, he merely shook his head slightly, showing no reaction to her words. He continued to hold out the bowl in front of her as if she couldn't leave the room without drinking from it.
"What do you want? You're the only one who can't understand human speech!" Faced with such stubbornness, she cursed again, "You're really a blockhead; I almost want to knock your head open to see if it's filled with sawdust!"
Xinrong was startled by her words and immediately lowered his gaze, pretending he hadn't heard anything!
In this general's residence, who would dare speak to the young master like that? Those who had spoken such words to him had mostly ended up in the underworld meeting Yama!
This girl was completely unharmed, sitting there perfectly fine and even jumping around while shouting at the young master!
In comparison, Xinrong understood more about her position in Night Star's heart and felt a newfound respect for her. The previous indifference he had shown vanished in an instant due to recent events.
"Holding it up won't help; I said I won't drink it, so I won't! What can you do about it?" With her neck stiffened, the woman was determined not to compromise with the man.
Slowly lowering the bowl from his hands, just when Mo Xier thought he was about to yield, he spoke up, "What you just said is not wrong, but it doesn't apply in this situation."
"That's nonsense!" She widened her eyes, unable to accept his rebuttal. "Then tell me where I'm wrong!"
Night Star chuckled lightly, looking at her with a mischievous glint in his eyes. "What you said may be true for others, but here with me, it's all nonsense!"
"You..." She never expected him to be so unreasonable. Furious, she slammed her hand on the table and stood up. To her, the man was simply toying with her.
However, before she could stand up, Night Star pressed her down with such force that even the chair she was sitting on shook slightly.
"What do you want to do, Night Star? I'm telling you..." Before she could finish her sentence, the man covered her lips with his hand, and no matter how much she struggled, it was futile.
His deep-set eyes fixed on her without a hint of relaxation, like a hawk staring at its prey. His voice was low but carried a chilling authority.
"I'm telling you, in front of me, Night Star, what I say goes. Even if it means making you do something you don't want to do, you will obediently see it through! In my world, I never allow anyone to go against my wishes! Do you understand?"
Such domineering words should have been met with silence, but unexpectedly, Mo Xier couldn't help but laugh out loud. Her eyes curved with amusement; despite her efforts to suppress it, the laughter still shone through.
She truly didn't want to laugh out loud; it was just that his words reminded her of those ridiculous CEO stories she had read in modern times, where the male lead would say such things to the female lead.
When she read them as a child, she thought the male leads were incredibly handsome and hoped for a man like that to treat her similarly. But now that her wish had come true, she found it utterly ridiculous.
"What are you laughing at?" Night Star frowned tightly, clearly not understanding what was funny.
She slowly raised her gaze, her eyes filled with playful mischief and alluring charm. Gently placing her hand on his shoulder with a teasing look, she lightly laughed and said, "Night Star, I'm not a young girl in her teens with fluttering hearts. Your words might work on someone else, but for me, to quote you: it's nonsense.
I have my own principles and hope you won't disrupt them; this is my final bottom line." After saying this, she dropped her hand and turned away from him, picking up the bowl and chopsticks on the table to eat.
As for the ginseng chicken soup placed beside her, she acted as if it didn't exist.
After a moment of silence, Night Star's expression grew increasingly grim. No one had ever dared to mock him in front of his face! Did this woman have the audacity of a lion?
Just as their argument was about to escalate, Xinrong quickly stepped forward and picked up the ginseng chicken soup from the table. With a smile, he said, "Miss must want to take this after the meal. That's fine; I'll heat it up on the stove first. Once you're done eating and want to drink it, you'll be able to have it right away!"
He awkwardly tried to change the subject but failed. Mo Xier firmly pressed down on the bowl Xinrong had just lifted. Her expression was cold. "I said I won't drink it; how many times do I need to emphasize that? Or are you and this blockhead both incapable of understanding human speech?"
Mo Xier's face looked terrible, pale like a bloodless corpse. Coupled with the bandage on her face, she seemed engulfed in a gloomy atmosphere.
It felt as if dark clouds surrounded her in circles; just a little lightning would bring about a torrential downpour.
Her complexion was not good, and Night Star's expression was no better. The woman said he was challenging her bottom line, but wasn't she also challenging his?
The argument seemed ready to erupt, and the atmosphere in the room had dropped below freezing. Xinrong, caught between the two, felt uncomfortable and wished she could sprout wings and leave this place.
At that moment, a commotion suddenly erupted outside the door, shattering the silence.
"I'll go see what’s happening outside," Xinrong seized the opportunity and hurried out of the room.
After she left, Mo Xier remained unfazed, slowly eating what was in her mouth, showing no signs of being affected by the man's presence.
In contrast, Night Star seemed to be struggling to suppress his anger. Xinrong had only been gone for a moment when she quickly returned, looking somewhat flustered.
"What happened?" Mo Xier abruptly stopped her chopsticks and asked.
Swallowing hard, Xinrong replied, "Young Master, the Emperor has summoned you!"
The Emperor? Not only Night Star but even Mo Xier couldn't help but be surprised. Why was he being summoned so suddenly?
"Did he say what it was about?"
"I’m not sure. That young man only said that the Emperor has been looking for you for a while and seems to have something urgent."
The man’s expression remained cold, showing no signs of panic. He exchanged a glance with Mo Xier; just that one look conveyed that they were both thinking the same thing.
He had previously promised the Emperor that he would bring Mo Xier into the palace, but given her current state—with injuries on her face—how could she enter? Moreover, if he really took her into the palace, he would feel somewhat reluctant.
"Did that young man say anything else? Like whether the Emperor instructed to bring anyone else into the palace?"
Xinrong thought for a moment and softly said, "I didn’t hear anything else. I only heard that young man say for you to hurry to the palace because the Emperor has urgent matters to discuss."
Upon hearing this, not only did he breathe a sigh of relief, but Mo Xier's tense mood also relaxed instantly. The palace was not a place to be taken lightly!
"Ancients" said it well, accompanying a ruler is like accompanying a tiger. If possible, she really wouldn't want to go to that place that devours people without leaving a trace!
The two exchanged glances, and whether or not to drink ginseng chicken soup seemed trivial in the face of this matter.
"Xinrong, take good care of the young lady. No one is allowed to enter this courtyard before I return to the residence, not even Old Madam with Miss Liu! Do you understand?"
The man sternly instructed Xinrong, leaving her momentarily stunned as she dazedly replied.
"Hurry up and go. I'm not a three-year-old child who needs your care. I know what I'm doing; you just need to rest assured."
Seeing that there was nothing for her to do, she picked up her chopsticks again and leisurely began to savor the delicious food on the table.
"Take care of yourself." Night Star only said this one sentence before turning to leave.
As she listened to the man's footsteps growing fainter, her actions of tasting the food also began to slow down until everything fell silent, and her movements came to a halt.
"Young lady, why aren't you eating more? Is this little bit enough to fill you?" Xinrong showed a puzzled expression and stepped forward to pick up a spare pair of chopsticks, without saying a word, she placed several pieces of meat into the woman's bowl.
Xinrong hadn't forgotten the man's instructions before he left—to take good care of the person in front of her. She had seen everything that happened today; how could she not take good care? This woman might become the future mistress of the General's residence!
Mo Xier's eyes held a hint of loneliness as she silently shook her head. "Just take all this away; I'm not particularly hungry."
Hearing her command, Xinrong could only comply, but seeing her lost expression made her feel uneasy.
"Young lady, I can see that you're still very worried about the young master. Why do you have to compete with him? If others didn't know better, they might think your relationship is quite poor."
"My relationship with him has never been good; don't speak carelessly!" She wore an expression of caution, as if unwilling to associate herself with Night Star in any way.
Since she was unwilling to admit it, Xinrong naturally couldn't force it. She cleared away all the dishes except for a plate of Osmanthus Cake.
"This morning I saw that you liked it, so I instructed the kitchen to make some more. You didn't eat much earlier; if you're hungry, having these first is also good."
Feeling Xinrong's concern for her, she smiled with appreciation. It felt really good to have someone like that always thinking of her.
Nodding with a smile, she waited until Xinrong finished tidying up and left. The room was quiet again, but it did not evoke the usual sense of loneliness in her heart.
Meanwhile, Night Star hurried back to his courtyard to change into his official attire, then rushed toward the palace, feeling surprisingly calm inside.
By the time he arrived at the palace, night had already fallen. It loomed in the center of the capital like a silent lion, exuding an air that made one feel compelled to submit.
At the entrance, a young eunuch was already waiting, looking somewhat anxious, which made Night Star feel a bit tense.
“Night General, you have finally arrived. The Emperor has been waiting for you in the hall for quite some time. Please follow me,” the eunuch urged.
Without even going through the basic palace entry checks, he was pulled inside. Seeing the eunuch's urgency, Night Star asked in a deep voice, “What could be so urgent that the Emperor summoned me?”
“Night General, you may not know this, but the situation at the border is critical. The Emperor is quite anxious,” the eunuch replied.
Critical situation at the border? As far as he knew, things had been stable lately with no signs of conflict. How did the Emperor receive such news while he was completely unaware? Something felt off.
The eunuch moved quickly; what would normally take several minutes to reach the grand hall took only a moment. “Night General, please go in quickly. The Emperor is furious right now, and I dare not enter,” he said.
“Useless fools! What good are you to me?”
