With a slightly lowered gaze that carried indifference, the hand holding the bowl tightened further. She lightly nodded to Liu Xuxin in gratitude but did not drink immediately. Instead, she set the bowl down and served a bowl for Liu Xuxin.
"Miss Liu, you should drink too. Thank you for the ointment you gave me for my appearance." She placed it in front of her, meeting Liu Xuxin's insincere smile, which made her feel a wave of nausea inside.
"Thank you." Liu Xuxin politely expressed her gratitude but, like her, did not drink the soup right away. Instead, she turned to serve food to Old Madam.
"Aunt, eat more celery. I heard from Doctor Wang that it's good for the heart." She picked up a large portion and placed it into Old Madam's bowl. When she turned back, she saw Mo Xier slightly lifting her veil and drinking all the chicken soup in one go.
The smile on her face became increasingly gentle, yet it resembled a venomous snake; behind that smile lay a dark heart!
Feeling pleased with herself, she picked up the bowl in front of her and slowly began to drink the chicken soup, her actions steady while her gaze remained fixed on Mo Xier. However, after waiting for a long time, nothing happened as she had imagined.
The smile on her face gradually faded. She couldn't understand why this woman showed no reaction despite everything that had been done.
Mo Xier maintained an indifferent expression, carefully eating without revealing any signs of discomfort.
As time passed and dinner was nearing its end, Mo Xier still showed no signs of unease. Liu Xuxin began to feel restless, her eyes fixed on Mo Xier as if trying to see through her.
Having long sensed something off about Liu Xuxin's gaze, Mo Xier remained unfazed, suppressing her own emotions.
Suddenly, Liu Xuxin felt a churn in her stomach! A cramping pain surged like a tide, uncontrollable groans escaping her lips.
Her delicate fingers pressed against her stomach, her face contorted in agony.
The sudden commotion startled everyone present, leaving them frozen in place, staring at her in confusion. Cui Er quickly stepped forward to support Liu Xuxin, who was about to collapse, her eyes filled with fear.
"It hurts! It hurts so much!" Liu Xuxin's expression was one of extreme pain, her stomach feeling as if it were being twisted by a knife, rendering her unable to speak.
"What happened? Hurry and call a doctor! What are you standing there for?" Old Madam shouted, her heart filled with worry as she watched the woman suffer so intensely.
In contrast, Mo Xier looked at her with calmness, a hint of amusement in her gaze.
Old Madam immediately noticed Mo Xier's expression and then glanced at Liu Xuxin's hateful eyes, causing a sense of unease to settle in her heart.
Slamming her hand on the table, she shouted, "What on earth is going on! How dare you engage in such dirty business right under my nose! Do you not regard me at all?"
Pain surged through Liu Xuxin, leaving her unable to speak. Yet, she couldn't comprehend what was happening! She had clearly placed the item in that Jade Bitch's bowl; why was she the one poisoned? What was wrong with her stomach?
The last impression in her mind was of the woman's indifferent expression, which ultimately could not withstand the pain coursing through her body as she fainted.
As she fell, chaos erupted in the room. Cui Er frantically screamed, pointing at the ever-calm Mo Xier and accusingly shouted, "Demoness! It's you, this Demoness, who poisoned my young lady! Old Madam, you must stand up for my young lady!"
With her words, all eyes in the room turned toward Mo Xier, and Old Madam's face darkened with malice.
"Someone! Keep an eye on her! As long as Xiner remains unconscious, this Demoness is not allowed to leave even a step!"
Mo Xier remained unresponsive, her gaze still calm and even carrying a hint of understanding and pride. This infuriated Old Madam further; she wished she could deal with Mo Xier right then and there!
"Don't worry, Old Madam. She won't wake up, so I naturally won't go anywhere!" The woman met her gaze with determination, showing no signs of evasion.
Doctor Wang arrived quickly, and after a moment, his expression was unclear. "Miss Liu, these are the symptoms of poisoning. Fortunately, it's not very serious. I'll prescribe some herbal medicine, and she should be able to wake up safely."
The moment the word "poisoning" was spoken, everyone fell silent. Cui Er's words turned out to be true; Liu Xuxin was really poisoned!
"It's all your fault, Demoness!" At that moment, Cui Er seemed to lose her reason and desperately tried to rush towards Mo Xier but was pulled back by Xinrong.
"Whether the young lady poisoned her is still uncertain. However, I do have a question for you, Sister Cui Er. How did you know Miss Liu was poisoned before Doctor Wang arrived?"
Could it be that Sister Cui Er learned some medical skills when no one was watching?" The pointed question immediately hit the core of the issue!
Cui Er's expression became flustered; her hands trembled at her sides, and she dared not look at anyone. Biting her lip, she said, "I just saw how the young lady was acting and casually mentioned it. Besides, with how the young lady looked just now, what else could it be if not poisoning?"
Such a flimsy excuse was evident to anyone listening. Mo Xier's cold gaze fixed on her as she softly said, "Sister Cui Er is truly clever; you guessed it perfectly! It seems that from now on, the General's residence really won't need to hire a doctor as Xinrong said; as long as you're here, that's enough since you can just guess."
Cui Er's face grew increasingly pale as she buried her head deeper.
"Cui Er, why don't you tell us when you acquired such extraordinary abilities? The doctor hasn't arrived yet, but you were the first to mention your young lady's symptoms?"
Mo Xier pressed on aggressively, making Cui Er feel even more humiliated. She stumbled backward in fear and nearly fell to the ground.
Seeing this, Old Madam had already understood the situation. It was likely that Liu Xuxin wanted to frame that Demoness but ended up harming herself instead! What a person who achieves nothing but causes trouble!
Mo Xier reached out to stop the conversation, and Old Madam coldly said, "What is wrong with you? Right now, Xiner's life hangs in the balance, and you have the energy to question her maid? Do you really think I don't exist?"
"How could that be? After all, Old Madam is the mother of Xingchen and the mistress of the General's residence; I naturally respect her," Mo Xier replied, her eyes slightly raised. Although it sounded like a respectful statement, it felt exceptionally harsh, like thorns piercing the skin.
After Doctor Wang's medicine was administered, it took only half an hour for the person lying in bed to gradually awaken from her drowsiness. Jiang Yu had been sitting by the bed, observing her condition.
Seeing her slightly opened eyes, he hurriedly leaned closer and softly called out, "Xiner, are you feeling better?"
Upon hearing his concerned voice, Liu Xuxin's tears began to flow uncontrollably, like a faucet that couldn't be turned off. She sobbed quietly, as if trying hard to suppress her grievances.
Old Madam felt even more heartbroken at this sight. She gently patted Liu Xuxin's shoulder and comforted her softly, "Come on, tell Aunt what happened."
"Aunt, I'm scared!" Although it was a complaint, her gaze remained fixed on the person standing behind Old Madam.
Meeting that gaze, Mo Xier sneered inwardly; she had indeed not guessed wrong! Unable to poison her before, now they wanted to frame her?
Following Liu Xuxin's line of sight, Old Madam naturally saw Mo Xier's indifferent eyes. Furrowing her brow tightly, she held Mo Xier's hand and said, "With Aunt here, what do you have to be afraid of? Don't worry; no matter what happens, Aunt will support you! Just speak up!"
"Yes, just say whatever you need to. There are so many people here; are you afraid that no one can support you?"
As soon as Old Madam finished speaking, Mo Xier chimed in. She stepped forward a few paces and stood by Liu Xuxin's bed. Although her smile was not visible on her face, the coldness in her eyes was palpable.
In that moment of eye contact, Liu Xuxin involuntarily trembled and instinctively tightened her grip on the blanket.
Under the gaze of Mo Xier, she felt completely exposed, as if this woman could see right through her. Her initial thoughts began to waver.
Seeing her hesitate to speak, Old Madam looked at her with determination and continued, "Whatever it is, speak boldly. With Aunt here, are you still afraid that someone will harm you?"
Meeting her gaze again, Liu Xuxin made up her mind and said weakly, "Aunt, I don't know what happened. After drinking the soup that Miss Mo served me, I was poisoned."
Sure enough!
All eyes turned to Mo Xier, like hot bulbs shining down on her, making the woman feel a bit overheated.
In response to Liu Xuxin's words, Mo Xier remained unfazed, a hint of amusement in her eyes.
With an eagle-like glare directed at her, Old Madam's face was filled with anger as she coldly said, "I want to know what you, this Demoness, are trying to do in this General's residence! How could you create such filthy things!"
"Is it too hasty to accuse someone based solely on her words?"
"Hasty? Xin'er ate the same dishes I did; the only difference is that bowl of chicken soup you gave her. If it wasn't you who poisoned it, then who else could it be?"
With a cold indifference in her eyes, Mo Xier slowly shook her head and smiled, "The one who poisoned is not me; it's her own doing!"
As soon as she finished speaking, Old Madam burst into mocking laughter. "Do you think I'm a three-year-old child? If Xin'er had poisoned it, she would have aimed to kill you. How did it end up being herself instead?"
"That is something you should ask Miss Liu herself." Slowly lifting her veil revealed a particularly hideous scar that even made Old Madam instinctively recoil, her eyes filled with disgust.
"Surely Miss Liu is familiar with the scars on my face? The reason I ended up like this is largely thanks to you."
"What do you mean by that? I don't understand." Seeing her scars, Liu Xuxin felt a surge of satisfaction; with her appearance now, the chances of regaining her former beauty had diminished significantly!
"Don't understand?" With a light laugh full of disdain, Mo Xier slowly approached her and whispered, "Do you really not understand? If you didn't, how would you know today that you were poisoned?"
Liu Xuxin was momentarily stunned, unable to respond to the question.
Normally, when someone is falsely accused, they would be at a loss for words. How could she be so articulate, as if she had already seen through Liu Xuxin's every move?
Nodding slowly, she remarked, "Indeed, like master, like servant. Miss Liu, when will you be able to diagnose yourself?"
"I'm in this much pain; if it's not poison, then what is it!"
"Is that so?" Her tone rose slightly but carried a dangerous undertone. "Isn't it true that Miss Liu has known about the poisoning all along? Or perhaps you knew I would be poisoned!"
Seeing that she couldn't win the argument, Liu Xuxin quickly shifted her focus. With a wronged expression on her face that looked particularly pitiful, she said, "Aunt, look, I've told the truth, but she just won't admit it!"
Tears streamed down her face as she spoke with a sobbing tone. "Aunt, you must stand up for me! I traveled thousands of miles to come here and was treated like this!"
"Demoness! How could you do such a thing to Xiner! Is this how the stars have taught you to interact with others?" Without considering the situation further, Old Madam pointed at the woman and scolded her.
