When Zhang Li and the other thirteen individuals walked through Gate 3, they left two soldiers guarding the entrance. This was naturally due to Zhang Li's caution, but inadvertently, it completely separated these two from the group.
In contrast to the surprise of Zhang Li and the others when they couldn't find the Zombie, the two guarding soldiers showed no emotion. They simply held their guns with both hands, gazing into the distance to prevent any unexpected incidents.
Everything seemed normal, but the Wolf Fang Soldier standing to the left of Gate 3 sensed an unusual sound near his ear, while his companion remained oblivious. Typically, low temperatures dull a person's sensory perception, yet the Wolf Fang Soldier on the left faintly felt that the strange sound resembled footsteps.
In the silent Morgue, what else could there be besides stiff corpses? Even if it were the Zombies mentioned by Captain Zhang, they would merely be trapped behind Gate 3. So how could there be faint sounds of footsteps?
The Wolf Fang Soldier who heard the noise was puzzled and raised his Thompson Submachine Gun, moving toward the source of the sound. His companion, not taking it seriously, leaned in to glance inside Gate 3 and confirmed that nothing was amiss before returning to his post.
After walking several dozen steps, the Wolf Fang Soldier found himself at Door 6. With his gun pointed forward and his head turned back, he intended to peek behind Door 6 but unexpectedly discovered a Corpse standing behind it.
Startled, the Wolf Fang Soldier immediately pulled the trigger of his weapon. A series of flashing bullets struck the corpse at close range, yet it remained unfazed. In an instant, it extended its arms and wrapped them around the Wolf Fang Soldier's neck while its decayed head had already sunk its teeth into his face.
The Wolf Fang Soldier attempted to resist, but he was too close to this monster, which overpowered him. He could no longer muster any strength and soon felt a heart-wrenching pain as his face was exposed with blood and bone.
Before Door 6, the Wolf Fang Soldier who had approached in response to the sound had already collapsed to the ground without having a chance to scream.
Hearing gunfire, the other Wolf Fang Soldier, who had been calm until then, quickly unlatched his Submachine Gun and rushed over.
Having mentally prepared himself, this Wolf Fang Soldier did not recklessly charge into Door 6. He raised his weapon, ready to shoot; however, he hesitated for a moment because what lay before him was too shocking even for a battle-hardened man who had seen bloodshed.
Behind the door frame stood an ugly corpse with its skull partially exposed. Its flesh hung loosely as if it were about to fall off. Its eyes were hollow and expressionless; clearly a dead person—but it was moving, flailing its limbs as it feasted on a corpse lying on the ground that was unmistakably that of his living comrade just moments ago.
"Damn it!" shouted the Wolf Fang Soldier as he raised his Thompson Submachine Gun and unleashed a barrage of bullets. However, when bullets hit the Walking Dead, there was no reaction.
Meanwhile, the already deceased Wolf Fang Soldier on the ground twitched as bullets riddled his body like a honeycomb.
"Brother!" Seeing that most of his bullets had struck his fallen comrade, the shooting Wolf Fang Soldier's anger surged. He drew out a Triangular Bayonet from his waist and lunged forward, stabbing it into the neck of the Walking Dead.
With a powerful twist of his wrist, he made a circular motion with the bayonet. If this had been a normal human being on the receiving end, they would have immediately met their end; however, this Zombie remained unfazed. Its eyes shifted toward its assailant as it lunged forward with arms like iron rods striking at the Wolf Fang Soldier's chest and abdomen.
Though this attack caused some damage due to being a national weapon, it wasn't significant. However, after taking that hit, the Wolf Fang Soldier finally realized he was facing a Zombie—not an ordinary enemy—and that close combat would not work in his favor. Fortunately, he still had a Submachine Gun in hand; he swung its stock and slammed it against the Zombie's head with great force. The weight of both him and the Thompson Submachine Gun shattered what remained of its exposed skull.
Like a crushed egg, brain matter splattered everywhere as he ruthlessly continued to smash down on that Zombie's head with his gunstock. "Malagobi! Let me show you how formidable my Wolf Fang Squad is!"
The Wolf Fang Soldier smashed the Zombie's head as if he had gone mad, causing blood and flesh to fly everywhere, with eyeballs bouncing around. A pair of jaws was knocked loose and landed right on the Wolf Fang Soldier's neck.
The Wolf Fang Soldier was blinded by rage and paid no mind to the jaws that had fallen on his neck. As he continued to mercilessly beat the Zombie, the skin and muscle covering those jaws suddenly twitched and bit down on the Wolf Fang Soldier's neck.
It was a stroke of fate; the spot where the jaws bit was precisely where the carotid artery lay. The Wolf Fang Soldier instantly gushed blood like a fountain.
"Ah..." The Wolf Fang Soldier couldn't help but scream, striking harder with the butt of his gun, but his sturdy body soon collapsed to the ground as his blood drained away.
The mournful sounds heard by Zhang Li and the other ten Wolf Fang Soldiers inside Gate 3 were the last words of the Wolf Fang Soldier.
Zhang Li and the remaining soldiers rushed to Gate 6, and upon seeing three bodies lying on the ground, although they were in disarray, Zhang Li recognized two of them immediately, causing his eyes to turn red.
Seeing this, Liu Ziming's eyes also reddened. However, adhering to military discipline, he did not lose focus. He raised his gun and scanned the surroundings while the other Wolf Fang Soldiers aimed their submachine guns at Gate 6.
By the time Li Nan and Han Guang arrived, Zhang Li had already positioned his two brothers' bodies correctly and muttered, "I will avenge you, my brothers!"
Li Nan understood immediately upon seeing this scene.
Clearly, only one Zombie had attacked his two brothers, and that Zombie had been rendered brainless by one of them and was now dead.
The only way to deal with a Zombie was to destroy its brain. Zhang Li had already learned this at Beiyuan Square but reiterated it now: "The weak point of a Zombie is its brain. To kill a Zombie, you must first take out its brain!" Looking at his deceased brothers, Zhang Li's anger reached its peak.
Liu Ziming looked at the mangled body of his brother on the ground and angrily said, "Three Zombies have been dealt with; we will take care of the rest!"
At that moment, Li Nan, who had been crouching on the ground, suddenly stood up and said to Zhang Li and Liu Ziming, "The dead Zombie is not one of the three sent to Jiangbei Hospital tonight!"
"Not those three? Then who is this brainless one?" Liu Ziming asked incredulously.
Li Nan drew the pistol that Zhang Li had given him and began scraping something off the ground with its muzzle. He then said, "This is an ear, a nose, and several teeth from that Zombie. The three bodies sent to Jiangbei Hospital tonight died from being eaten beyond recognition; therefore, they couldn't possibly have these parts. So this one isn't one of those three infected Zombies!"
Upon hearing this, Zhang Li exclaimed in shock, "Are you saying there are more than just those three Zombies in this Underground Morgue? How many enemies do we actually have?"
Li Nan was left speechless; clearly, he couldn't answer that question. He simply said, "Perhaps our enemies are all the corpses in Jiangbei Hospital's Morgue!"
Liu Ziming, confused by the meaning, asked, "What exactly do you mean?"
Li Nan spread his hands and said, "Tonight at Beiyuan Square, three people were killed: an elderly man who was staggering, a young male office worker, and a girl in her twenties. Since we haven't clarified their identities yet, the bodies are temporarily stored in Jiangbei Hospital's Morgue, waiting for further developments in the case. Once we find their families and confirm their connection to this case, we can release the bodies. Han Guang would likely understand these procedures better than I do. What’s unexpected is that these three victims are not ordinary victims; they died from being bitten by Zombies. They have already been infected, but the symptoms haven't manifested yet, so they are temporarily indistinguishable from dead bodies. Even more astonishing is that when these three Zombies went berserk in the Morgue, they actually transmitted the infection to other bodies in the Morgue!"
Li Nan's statement was like a stone thrown into a lake, instantly creating ripples.
"Are you saying that those three Zombies bit the other bodies in the Morgue?" Liu Ziming asked.
Li Nan nodded and helplessly replied, "We overlooked one thing: the iron door in the abandoned corridor that we almost crashed into corresponds to the area behind Door 6 in Mortuary One. So our initial assumption was wrong!"
One of the Wolf Fang Soldiers behind Zhang Li flushed with anger and rushed up to Li Nan, questioning him, "You said that thing was behind Door 3! That's why we went into Door 3 and left those two outside! You caused their deaths; you led us to the wrong place!"
Li Nan felt guilty facing this Wolf Fang Soldier's accusation and simply said, "I overlooked the position of that iron door in the abandoned corridor. I led you to the wrong place, resulting in unnecessary sacrifices!"
The Wolf Fang Soldier raised his right hand as if to grab Li Nan by the collar but was stopped by a large hand from behind him. "Li Xiaofan, do you still have any military discipline left?"
Li Xiaofan was silenced by the voice behind him and choked out, "Your brother was killed because of him! Don't you feel any anger?"
The one who stopped Li Xiaofan was their Company Commander, Zhang Li. "A soldier's anger should not be directed at his own people. The Zombies killed my brother; I will slaughter every Zombie. But we cannot act recklessly; we must plan before taking action. A soldier is not a reckless fool!"
Li Xiaofan did not respond but stepped back. However, Li Nan knew that his hostility had not diminished.
