Li Nan and thirteen others returned to Gate 3.
The scene was the same, the number of people unchanged, except that two of the brothers who were guarding the door were now missing.
Without time to reminisce again, Li Nan and the others dispersed.
Liu Ziming opened more than a dozen Corpse Storage Cabinets, all of which were empty. Meanwhile, Li Xiaofan was quick on his feet, checking over twenty cabinets without finding a single corpse.
"What’s going on? Is there really no body in Gate 3?" Zhang Li looked at his group of brothers who had pulled out all the cabinets; not even a piece of flesh remained, let alone a Zombie.
Li Nan exclaimed, "Impossible! I’ve checked the records. Although the cabinets weren’t completely full, there should still be half of the bodies left. How could there be none?"
Han Guang approached and inspected each cabinet one by one. It seemed that most of them contained only a single transparent plastic bag.
Zhang Li clearly did not believe such an absurd situation. "Could it be that those corpses just ran away on their own?"
Li Nan's expression turned grim as he said slowly, "It seems they really have escaped, and they have all turned into Zombies!"
Upon hearing Li Nan's words, all the Wolf Fang Soldiers turned pale. In this situation, they had no idea about the Pattern; could it be that all the Zombies from Gate 3 had wandered off to other gates?
Li Nan continued, "According to the records, there were seventy-eight corpses in Gate 3, plus the two brought here tonight..."
Before Li Nan could finish his sentence, he was interrupted by Li Xiaofan: "Weren't three corpses brought in tonight? Why do you say two?"
"I misspoke; it was indeed three corpses!" A flicker of uncertainty crossed Li Nan's eyes but was quickly concealed as he continued, "There were a total of eighty-one corpses in Gate 3, and now they are all gone. We don’t have an accurate explanation; one possibility is that they left this place, but since the main door of Mortuary One hasn’t been breached, they might still be hiding in the remaining four gates!"
It seemed that this matter was far from over and was more complicated than everyone had imagined.
Zhang Li said to Li Nan, "Even though we killed all the Zombies at Gate 6, our weapon consumption was significant. The current situation is that if there are still hidden Zombies lurking around, we might not be able to handle them!"
Li Nan understood: "You mean we should send someone back upstairs to get firearms and ammunition!"
Zhang Li nodded.
When it came to dealing with Zombies, Li Nan couldn't contribute at all, so he couldn't offer any specific advice.
"What do you think the Zombies behind Door 3 are hiding?" Zhang Li asked Li Nan in a very low voice, seemingly trying to avoid being overheard.
Li Nan replied quietly, "I don't believe they would hide behind other doors. If that were the case, they would swarm out like they did from Door 6!"
Li Nan's statement didn't provide Zhang Li with an answer; instead, it left him even more confused. Zhang Li shook his head and said, "I don't care where they are. If I had absolute authority, I would immediately evacuate everyone from Jiangbei Hospital and bombard this place with a few Dongfeng Ballistic Missiles to ensure those Zombies have no place to hide!"
Li Nan smiled wryly and said, "If the authorities really realized the severity of the situation, they wouldn't wait for personnel to evacuate; they would launch missiles right away!"
Zhang Li scratched his head and said seriously, "If it comes down to sacrificing myself, I wouldn't hesitate to point the gun at my own head!"
Li Nan noncommittally replied, "Many sacrifices are often in vain. I still hope Captain Zhang can eliminate these underground Zombies and bring all our brothers back safely!"
Zhang Li appreciated this sentiment and said, "Even though there is no war in peacetime, we soldiers have also escaped death multiple times. Life and death are trivial matters, but the Zombies must be completely eradicated!"
Li Nan awkwardly laughed and said, "With Captain Zhang saying this, I know I haven't followed the wrong person!"
As they spoke, Zhang Li and the others had already reached the entrance of Mortuary One. Due to previous losses, Zhang Li was unwilling to split his troops again, so retrieving weapons and ammunition from the surface required everyone to mobilize.
Just as they stepped out of Door One, the lights above them suddenly went out, plunging the entire corridor and Morgue into darkness.
"What’s going on?" everyone shouted uncontrollably as they raised their Submachine Guns, but nothing was visible in front of them.
Li Nan and Zhang Li were at the front, their bodies tensing up. Humans transitioning abruptly from light to darkness experience a temporary blinding effect; thus, both Li Nan and the others felt as if their eyes were covered and could see nothing at all.
Zhang Li shouted loudly, "Liu Ziming?"
"Yes!" Liu Ziming replied.
"Li Xiaofan?"
"Yes."
...
Due to the inability to see, Zhang Li quickly confirmed whether anyone had encountered an accident by voice. Fortunately, everyone was safe.
After half a minute of calming down, the light gradually returned to everyone's eyes.
However, in the entire underground environment, there was no external light source. After the lights went out, Li Nan and the others were no different from blind people.
Nevertheless, Zhang Li, being from a military background, had plenty of life-saving equipment on him. Each person was equipped with a Wolf Eye Flashlight, a military-grade product with extremely strong focusing and penetration capabilities, allowing visibility up to fifty meters.
Once their eyes adjusted, Zhang Li took out a flashlight about the thickness of a finger from his chest pocket; it was the Wolf Tooth Flashlight.
As soon as he turned on the flashlight, Zhang Li scanned the surroundings alertly to check for any enemy presence. Soon after, the Wolf Eye Flashlights in the hands of others were also turned on.
Zhang Li said suspiciously, "Why did the power suddenly go out?"
Li Nan was also startled by this sudden turn of events. Logically speaking, they had already communicated with the people above at the hospital, so a power outage should not have occurred. However, the scene before them clearly indicated that something unexpected had happened.
"Could it be that the power supply above ground has been damaged?" Li Nan speculated.
Zhang Li wasn't interested in why the power went out; he just wanted to know if they could get out under the current circumstances.
"Since the power is out, that Freight Elevator definitely won't work. Is there another way out?" At this point, Zhang Li and his team's ammunition had already been significantly depleted. If they encountered a situation like that in front of Door 6 again, they might not be able to escape unscathed.
Li Nan did not respond, only softly said, "I remember now, the power supply in the hospital is at a first-level status. This means that if there is a widespread power outage in Jiangbei City, the hospital can still operate normally because it has its own backup power source. So the current situation is not a power outage; rather, the underground power equipment has been damaged!"
Li Nan suddenly recalled the odd feeling he had earlier in the hallway. At that moment, he had a strong sense that there were eyes watching him from the ventilation duct above. However, he had objectively dismissed this thought because, under those circumstances, it was impossible for anyone to be in the ventilation. But now, thinking back, perhaps there really was something up there!
Li Nan voiced his thoughts, and Zhang Li seemed surprised. "Impossible! How could those zombies get into the ventilation duct? It's over three meters high!"
Li Nan knew his idea sounded a bit crazy, but he couldn't help but doubt the situation before them. "The ventilation duct above could connect to the underground power supply. If those things didn't damage the power source, how could there be a power outage here?"
Zhang Li clicked his tongue in disbelief. "Are you saying that those creatures intentionally damaged the power system here to trap us in darkness?"
Li Nan shook his head in denial. "Maybe it's just a coincidence. They are merely mindless and brutal creatures; they wouldn't think of or be capable of doing such things!"
At that moment, Zhang Li raised his Wolf Eye Flashlight and shone it towards the ceiling, directly at a ventilation duct.
The ventilation duct was wrapped in metal sheeting with numerous mesh holes exposed in between. Under the light of the Wolf Eye Flashlight, it appeared quite deep.
"Are you sure?" Zhang Li couldn't help but ask, while Li Nan replied with determination, "Originally, this underground structure had stairs leading back up, but as you have seen, those stairs have long been abandoned. Without a freight elevator, our only way out is through Door 6 by breaking down that iron door."
At this point, Han Guang spoke to everyone, "Maybe we really should go into Door 6; we might discover something useful!"
