In a daze, Li Nan felt his mind was in a chaotic mess, and then the dark world before him gradually brightened.
"What’s going on?" Li Nan silently questioned, instinctively raising his hands to shield his eyes, seemingly unaccustomed to the light.
After a moment, Li Nan finally opened his eyes, and slowly memories began to return to him.
Li Nan remembered that he had been administering an IV to Liu Ziming when he saw several zombies sneak in behind Zhang Li and the others. After a few screams, he lost consciousness.
Instinctively, Li Nan looked around, keeping his body hunched over, afraid of being attacked by the zombies.
Now fully aware, Li Nan observed his surroundings. Not a single zombie was in sight; not even a living person was present. This left Li Nan feeling psychologically impacted. "Could this still be a dream?"
Li Nan slapped himself across the face, feeling a sharp sting. The scenery around him remained unchanged, leaving him somewhat bewildered. "Could all of this be real? Then where did Zhang Li and the others go?"
After calming himself slightly, Li Nan carefully examined his surroundings. He realized he was in a place filled with cardboard boxes, all labeled "Medical Use."
Now it dawned on Li Nan. "This is the drug storage room!"
Before he could voice any further questions, a middle-aged man emerged from behind a stack of cardboard boxes.
"You finally woke up!"
Li Nan turned towards the voice and was taken aback; the person was none other than Liu Heping, the Deputy Director of the Outpatient Department.
"What’s going on? Did you bring me here? Where are Zhang Li and the others?" Li Nan couldn't hide his fear and confusion.
Liu Heping chuckled, "The effects of Lidocaine take an hour to wear off. Your friends must have been trapped in the Second Morgue by now!"
Upon hearing this, Li Nan understood most of what had happened. "You did this?"
Liu Heping nodded. "Besides me, there’s no one else in this Underground Morgue!"
Li Nan wanted to punch this scoundrel in front of him, but as he stood up, he discovered a chain wrapped around his feet.
Liu Heping laughed, "Young people are strong and robust; I have to be on guard!"
Li Nan angrily asked, "What exactly do you want to do?"
Now Li Nan had figured it out. The reason Liu Heping performed surgery on Liu Ziming was merely to attract everyone's attention. Then, using some unknown means, he intended to use the Zombies to eliminate this group of people. However, his plan had backfired, and he could only retreat and instead trap Zhang Li and the others in the Second Morgue.
Liu Heping's expression became serious as he said slowly, "What I want to do is quite simple. Do you see that large tarp in the corner of the drug storage room? I will let you see its true nature!"
As he spoke, Liu Heping walked over and forcefully lifted the tarp.
Li Nan was stunned. Underneath the tarp in the corner was a container-sized Iron Box, and what was most horrifying was that it contained dozens of Zombies, struggling and clawing with grotesque faces, drooling profusely. The scene resembled a ghostly prison.
Li Nan was speechless. "Is this what you've done? You want to control them?"
Liu Heping shook his head. "I cannot control them, but I want to control you!"
Li Nan cursed, "They are Zombies; Zombies cannot be controlled! Your current demeanor is nothing but a delusion!"
Liu Heping was unfazed. "I never thought such an opportunity would arise. When I learned about the Beiyuan Square Incident, I began to ponder what these Ghosts were—were they really Zombies? So when the bodies of the three victims were sent over, I secretly hid one of them in the Second Morgue. You can already foresee what happened next; that body gradually changed, and I kept observing from the shadows. I wanted to understand the rules and principles behind this phenomenon and, most importantly, control it for myself!"
Li Nan suddenly realized why there was no body in Cabinet No. 170; it had been stolen by Liu Heping.
Li Nan disdainfully said, "But you failed! Those Walking Dead are not under your control at all; that's why you locked them in the Iron Box!"
Liu Heping's previously proud expression gradually faded. "I have failed, but I still have another chance to try. You are my next opportunity!"
Li Nan laughed loudly. "It's impossible! Even if you turn me into a Zombie, I won't be under your control; that's utterly absurd!"
Liu Heping replied, "I don't fully understand how Zombies are created, but I do know one thing: Zombies are controlled by brain nerves. If I can manipulate their brains, there is a possibility of controlling them. However, previous experiments using dead bodies have failed, so this time I plan to use living people!"
Li Nan still laughed. "What do you plan to do? Turn me into a Zombie? Then I'll obediently follow your orders like a dog?"
Liu Heping certainly understood Li Nan's sarcasm but did not refute it. "Do you know about Deoxyephedrine? Do you understand the function of the human cerebellum? Are you familiar with neurology?"
“Deoxyephedrine is what you call ice. Are you trying to use the dependency of the brain to control Zombies?”
Liu Heping denied, “It's not about controlling Zombies; it's about controlling you, and then slowly turning you into a Zombie!”
Li Nan was frightened by this madman, the Deputy Director. He didn't know if this constructive idea could actually work; just the madness of it was enough to send chills down his spine.
“Even if you can control one or two Zombies, what good is that? This is anti-human!”
Liu Heping laughed loudly, “Humanity will no longer exist, so what does it matter? The future world will be ruled by Zombies, so if I can surpass them, then I will be the true king of the world!”
Li Nan smiled bitterly, “I don't know when this Deputy Director Liu got infected with Nazi ideology; he has become as crazy as Hitler!”
The current situation was that he was at the mercy of others. Li Nan felt powerless and hoped to end his life quickly in the hands of this madman, Hitler.
Liu Heping continued, “I was worried about not having any living people for experiments when you all came rushing in. So I can't be blamed for this; life and death are fated, Comrade Li Nan!” After saying this, Liu Heping raised a stick from behind and swung it at Li Nan's head.
“Damn it, another blow!” Li Nan fell into unconsciousness once again.
