It felt as if he had just experienced a grand dream, a dream filled with the seasons that was difficult to decipher. When Li Nan gradually awoke from this dream, he first felt a moment of confusion, then his eyes widened in shock.
Li Nan could not remember what had happened; it was as if he had been performing surgery on Liu Ziming in the Morgue when suddenly his mind went blank, and he collapsed to the ground. Then, he seemed to regain some memories, reminiscent of the triple-layered dreams in Inception.
Was being trapped in the Underground Morgue and encountering Zombies the first layer of the dream? Waking up to see the deranged Liu Heping was the second layer? And now, this situation was merely the third layer? Li Nan found it amusing; how could there possibly be Zombies in the world? Everything clearly felt like a dream within a dream.
Li Nan gathered his strength and slapped himself hard, leaving a trail of blood at the corner of his mouth. Everything felt incredibly real, yet it did not seem like a dream!
Li Nan felt as if his mind was a pile of mush, completely unable to think. So when he opened his eyes and stood up from the ground, he was deeply conflicted inside. He did not want to believe the reality before him; he refused to accept that Zombies had overrun the world and that it was indeed apocalyptic!
When you are unwilling to accept this world, there are usually two choices: to flow with it or to go against it. Li Nan did not know what his choice was, but after slightly stabilizing his emotions, he surprisingly felt calm. It was like the sea remained tranquil even during a raging storm.
Li Nan looked around the drug storage room and found it in disarray; all the medical boxes were scattered on the floor, and there were dozens of corpses, drenched in blood.
Li Nan attempted to stand up and observed that those who had died tragically were all Zombies.
"Who did this?" Li Nan wondered, as according to his last memory, Liu Heping had conducted experiments on him to turn him into a Zombie. However, it was clear that Li Nan was not a Zombie; he was still a complete and living human being.
Li Nan was dumbfounded but suddenly realized that his stomach felt particularly uncomfortable. Looking down, he discovered that his belly was round and bulging, as if he had just overeaten.
Scanning his surroundings, Li Nan noticed that most of the medicine boxes on the ground were empty, and some tablets and liquids had vanished without a trace. Connecting this with his swollen belly, he understood immediately, "So I ate them all!"
At this thought, Li Nan suddenly furrowed his brow as he felt a wave of bloating in his abdomen; his intestines were churning and making gurgling sounds.
Li Nan was alarmed. "I wonder where Liu Heping has run off to; I hope he hasn't been killed by that lunatic. I might end up dying from my own greed!"
Holding his stomach in discomfort, Li Nan's face twisted into an expression resembling a teacup.
Suddenly, a rush of relief erupted from his rear end as if a clogged drain had finally cleared after thousands of years. In an instant, Li Nan's previously tense eyes, ears, mouth, and nose felt liberated.
A loud fart erupted, and the pain in his abdomen immediately dissipated. Li Nan felt cheerful and quite comfortable.
Then, Li Nan reflexively pinched his nose, "Why does it smell so strong?" He looked down at all the opened boxes on the floor and felt slightly relieved. Logically speaking, consuming such a haphazard mix of drugs should be fatal, but aside from some discomfort in his stomach, Li Nan had no other reactions.
Li Nan ultimately did not recall his earlier outburst, and he explained Liu Heping's disappearance and the situation in the storage room as possibly an accident during Liu Heping's transformation into a Zombie. Therefore, his experiment had failed, and all the Zombies he had imprisoned were dead. However, Li Nan was completely unaware of what had actually happened.
Since his condition had improved for the time being, Li Nan relaxed and chose not to dwell on complicated matters like Zombies or apocalypses. He just wanted to sit quietly and rest for a while.
At this moment, Li Nan understood that everything he had experienced was not a dream but real life. Perhaps 2014 truly was the end of the world, but he no longer cared. The destruction of the world had nothing to do with him; he just wanted to survive, even if it meant living like a tragic Robinson.
Li Nan thought of Gao Xue and recalled Liu Heping mentioning that there was already a Zombie outbreak at Jiangbei Hospital with no survivors. At this point, his expression darkened again. He had intended to be with Gao Xue until the end; how could she possibly die? How could she fall victim to Zombies?
Thinking of this made Li Nan's spirits rise again; he wanted to rush out and save the woman he loved.
Li Nan dashed out of the drug storage room, passed through the door of the Second Morgue, and suddenly realized with a jolt in his mind, "Zhang Li and the others are still trapped here! How could I forget!"
With this thought in mind, Li Nan quickly fished out a key from his pocket and used it on the combination lock, swiftly opening the second door.
When Li Nan and Zhang Li's group descended underground initially, he had prepared keys for Mortuary One and the Second Morgue, so opening doors was no challenge for him.
As the door swung open, a gust of cold air rushed out, causing Li Nan to shiver slightly.
Without hesitation, ignoring the cold mist, he charged inside. "Captain Zhang Li! Officer Han..." Li Nan shouted uncontrollably as he ran toward Door 4.
Inside Door 4 were Zhang Li and six other men huddled together, trying to conserve body heat.
When Li Nan saw Zhang Li and the others, they were already in a state of mild unconsciousness. Without much effort, he moved these seven men from the Morgue to the drug storage room. At this moment, compared to saving Gao Xue, these living men felt far more tangible.
After a few minutes of recovery, Zhang Li was the first to regain consciousness. Upon seeing Li Nan, he sighed, "So you’re dead too, or are we still alive?"
Li Nan smiled wryly and replied, "We're both still alive!"
A few more minutes passed, and everyone had recovered, though Liu Ziming's condition was not optimistic. He had just undergone surgery and was very weak; it was uncertain whether he could pull through.
Han Guang asked with a trembling voice, "You really have a strong fate. After being taken by Liu Heping, you still managed to survive!"
"You all are even luckier. You endured in an environment of minus fifteen degrees for several hours and still survived!"
Han Guang glanced at his watch and accurately stated, "It was three hours and twenty minutes. Without a strong will, it would have been hard to hold on!"
Li Nan chuckled, "You can still keep track of time; it seems you all are fine!" While speaking, Li Nan turned to rummage through a pile of medical boxes to see if there were any usable medications left.
At that moment, as Li Nan turned around, Han Guang's expression tightened. He immediately drew his sidearm and aimed it at Li Nan's head.
Zhang Li noticed something was off as well but did not stop Han Guang. Instead, he drew his Triangular Bayonet from behind him, seemingly harboring hostility towards Li Nan.
