Han Guang carried Li Nan and ran ahead, while Zhang Li and Mo Xiaohui followed closely behind. They exited the Multifunctional Conference Hall on the eleventh floor and headed straight for the rooftop.
As they reached the stairwell, thick smoke surged toward them from behind. Zhang Li muttered, "How can the fire spread so quickly?"
In firefighting terminology, there is a phenomenon known as the chimney effect, which describes the situation in Jiangbei Hospital at that moment. The fire source was located very close to the rooftop, making it particularly susceptible to external wind influences. It was like a farmer's chimney; the difference in internal and external pressure created a massive pull, causing the fire to develop rapidly.
Zhang Li scratched his head. "It seems we can't control the fire at all now; we have to go to the rooftop directly!"
Beside him, Haizi asked, "Aren't we going to look for Liu Heping? That old guy has nearly cost us our lives several times!"
With a loud thud, Zhang Li punched Haizi on the head. "Are you stupid? We can't even take care of ourselves; why worry about Liu Heping? Let him fend for himself!"
This scene amused Li Xiaofan, but Mo Xiaohui beside him still looked gloomy, showing no signs of laughter.
Li Xiaofan sensed something was off but realized they were in a life-or-death situation; who would be in a good mood? So he didn't dwell on Mo Xiaohui's demeanor and kept glancing back at the advancing flames.
The twelfth floor was hardly a place to stay. Although Zhang Li and the others hurried along, the scorching waves of hot air from behind rushed toward them relentlessly.
"Oh no..." Mo Xiaohui stumbled and fell on the stairs, her knees and ankles bruised.
Seeing this, Zhang Li felt distressed but quickly turned back to help Mo Xiaohui up. "Hurry! If we slow down any more, we'll be roasted like chickens!"
Mo Xiaohui wiped her face and limped along behind him.
Zhang Li shook his head. "What a troublesome person!" Without further explanation, he picked up Mo Xiaohui and hurried after the others.
Han Guang sensed something must have happened behind them and shouted, "Is everyone okay?"
"Women are really a hassle," Zhang Li shouted, "but it's fine now!"
As he spoke, the group had already reached the hidden door on the rooftop. Han Guang suddenly kicked it with force, but the door did not budge.
Li Xiaofan took a closer look and saw that the hidden door was secured with a chain about the thickness of a thumb.
"Can't we kick this thing open?" Han Guang quickly assessed the situation, and Li Xiaofan nodded, "Looks like we're going to be trapped here!"
Zhang Li, who was running last, caught up and immediately let go of Mo Xiaohui. "You should lose some weight; you're a bit heavy!"
Mo Xiaohui's face flushed. Normally, she would have retorted, but now she couldn't say anything because the closer they got to the rooftop, the more she felt an unprecedented danger.
"Um..." Mo Xiaohui hesitated to express her concerns but ultimately didn't say anything. Zhang Li chuckled, "But you and my brother Li Nan seem quite compatible!"
Zhang Li turned to look at the hidden door ahead, which appeared to be an iron plate door that had been unused for years. A rusty chain was wrapped around it, suggesting that no one had accessed this rooftop since it was built.
Li Xiaofan weighed the chain in his hands. Although it was heavily rusted, it wasn't weak enough to break by sheer force. "We'll need tools to open this!"
Zhang Li frowned. "In this situation, where are we going to find tools?"
Li Xiaofan scratched his head. "I can go back and look for something—a wrench or a hammer will do!"
Zhang Li turned to check the situation in the stairwell; thick smoke had filled the area above them. Going back now would be tantamount to suicide!
"No! We can't take that risk anymore!"
Li Xiaofan argued back, "If we don't get this hidden door open, we'll suffocate here anyway. It's better for me to take a chance!"
Zhang Li pondered for a moment. In this situation, if they could escape to the rooftop, there might still be a glimmer of hope. However, if they were trapped here, it would truly be certain death.
Unable to argue further, Zhang Li instructed Li Xiaofan to turn back and look for tools. "Remember, the fire shouldn't have reached the twelfth floor yet. You can only go there to search. It would be best to find something like a fire extinguisher to break that chain. But be extra careful; the smoke is thick down below!"
Li Xiaofan nodded, bent low, and turned back into the hallway.
At that moment, Han Guang sat down on the ground with a wry smile. "If we can't escape, you and I will die here!"
Zhang Li also forced a smile. "Since we're about to die, can you answer me one question?"
"Of course, ask away!"
"I always feel like you're not really a police officer. What exactly is your identity?" Zhang Li asked casually, while Han Guang chuckled.
"Is that really your question? It seems rather insignificant!"
Zhang Li's expression suddenly turned serious. "We're about to die; can't you just tell me the truth?"
Han Guang raised his gaze, first looking at the exhausted Mo Xiaohui, then shifting his attention to the unconscious Li Nan. "Everyone has secrets they need to take to their graves, so..."
Han Guang's face suddenly broke into a playful grin. "So I really am a police officer—Captain of Jiangbei Police Station. I've worked for over ten years to reach this position. I had hoped to become the head of the precinct in my lifetime, but now that's no longer possible!"
After saying this, Han Guang laughed heartily to himself. "I stumbled into Jiangbei Hospital and didn't realize I had already stepped into the gates of hell; now everything is beyond my control!"
After listening to Han Guang, Zhang Li felt a twinge of doubt. Could it be that she had guessed wrong? Was he really just a police officer?
Faced with Han Guang's seemingly genuine explanation and self-deprecation, Zhang Li began to believe him somewhat. However, in an instant, she found herself laughing as well. "We're about to become corpses; what does any of this matter?"

At this moment, Li Xiaofan had already covered his mouth and nose with a piece of clothing as he descended the stairs, because the smoke was so thick that it was very easy to suffocate.
The entire corridor on the twelfth floor was filled with smoke, and since Li Xiaofan was not very familiar with the environment, it took him a minute or two to roughly figure out the layout.
The temperature in the hallway was rising rapidly, and Li Xiaofan could feel that his skin was already being burned. However, he could not relax; he had to find a suitable tool to break down that hidden door, otherwise they would all end up like roasted pigs.
In the corner of the eastern wall of the corridor, Li Xiaofan discovered a Fire Hydrant, and he made his way over. Where there was a Fire Hydrant, there should be a Fire Extinguisher, but as he approached, Li Xiaofan cursed under his breath, "Damn it, even the leaders have taken everything; they didn't even provide a Fire Extinguisher!"
Just when Li Xiaofan felt discouraged, he caught a glimpse out of the corner of his eye and noticed an office nearby. He moved over to test it out and found that the door was actually unlocked.
This suited Li Xiaofan perfectly, and he immediately barged in. The office was not very large, only about thirty square meters, but it was well-equipped and even had a small Golf Course Model displayed!
Li Xiaofan was overjoyed and discovered a set of golf clubs by the wall. Without thinking twice, he picked out several clubs and quickly left, as the smoke was too thick; if he didn't leave soon, he would suffocate.
Just as Li Xiaofan was about to exit, he suddenly heard rustling sounds coming from under the office desk. Startled, Li Xiaofan shouted, "Who’s there?"
No one answered him, and Li Xiaofan did not dare to be careless. He tightly gripped the golf club in his hand and slowly approached the desk.
At that moment, there was a sizzling sound from outside in the corridor. Li Xiaofan knew that the fire had spread closer and did not dare to delay any longer. He quickly turned back and hurried into the hallway.
Li Xiaofan felt the roar of flames behind him; he assumed it was the fire spreading and did not look back as he continued running forward.
After running for more than a minute, Li Xiaofan finally reached the hallway and hurried a few steps to see Zhang Li ahead.
Li Xiaofan shouted, "I found a tool! Hurry up and break down the door!"
At this moment, Mo Xiaohui, who was holding Li Nan, suddenly raised her head. She witnessed everything before her with her mouth agape, seemingly unable to believe what she saw!
Zhang Li's complexion instantly turned dark green. "Behind you, behind you, that thing..."
Li Xiaofan felt surprised. Why did everyone look so strange? Did something happen?
After hearing Zhang Li's words, Li Xiaofan suddenly turned around, and at that moment, his face froze. "How is this possible?"
He saw a figure standing behind him, surrounded by flames, resembling the Zhurong, God of War from ancient times, but upon closer inspection, it was clearly a Zombie!
Li Xiaofan's jaw nearly dropped to the ground. Did he really think that the spreading flames were caused by this pursuing Zombie?
Just as Li Xiaofan was in shock, the flame-wreathed Zombie had already reached out with both arms and tightly grasped Li Xiaofan's neck. In an instant, there was a sizzling sound, and Li Xiaofan's head drooped as he pretended to be dying!
Zhang Li shouted, "Hold on! You must hold on! I'm coming to save you!"
Li Xiaofan, who was being choked, had already been roasted like a piglet. However, he still used his last bit of strength to throw away the golf club in his hand and hoarsely shouted, "Quickly open the door! We must... we must leave here!"
Immediately afterward, Li Xiaofan's entire body ignited spontaneously and instantly turned into a charred corpse!
