A beautiful woman always attracts attention, especially from men, and Li Nan is no exception.
Li Nan glanced at Mo Xiaohui and then turned to say, "You should freshen up first, and then we can go out to find water and food!"
Mo Xiaohui replied in surprise, "Don't we have food? We scavenged quite a bit from that convenience store last night!"
Li Nan pointed at the cardboard box they had brought back the previous night. "This little bit isn't enough for us to eat for a day! Can't we think of something?"
Mo Xiaohui remembered that Li Nan had eaten seven or eight packs of instant noodles by himself last night, and with that kind of appetite, they definitely needed to stock up on more food!
"Now we don't even have drinking water. We need to find a way to replenish it. However, the city's water supply system hasn't collapsed; I wonder if it's safe to drink?"
Mo Xiaohui scoffed, "In that case, you might as well collect some rainwater; that would be better than tap water!"
Li Nan also felt that drinking tap water was rather unreliable and immediately dismissed the idea.
For Mo Xiaohui, washing up was just about splashing some water on her face. After doing so, she casually picked up a towel to dry her face.
"This towel is so rough!" Mo Xiaohui exclaimed, while Li Nan snatched it away. "If it's rough, then don't use it!"
Mo Xiaohui smiled, "If I don't dry my face, I'll end up looking like a little raccoon. If you want to see that, I don't mind!"
As the host, Mo Xiaohui was naturally more skilled with words than Li Nan, who could only concede defeat. "After we eat a bit of instant noodles, we need to go out and look for drinking water and food!"
"Are we having breakfast or lunch now?" Mo Xiaohui asked with a smile, while Li Nan shook his head.
The dozen or so packs of instant noodles they had scavenged from the convenience store were already gone. All that was left were two vacuum-packed pig trotters, three bundles of hanging noodles, and a bottle of Lao Gan Ma that Li Nan had retrieved from a corpse. These were all the supplies they had left.
Mo Xiaohui was somewhat resistant to Lao Gan Ma, saying, "Can something so oily be eaten?"
Li Nan shook his head, "Then don't eat it!"
Mo Xiaohui tentatively picked up a little with her chopsticks and placed it on her tongue, being very careful.
"It's a bit numbing, a bit spicy!" Mo Xiaohui made her own evaluation, smacking her lips, then picked up a bit more and added it to her noodle bowl. She explained, "This instant noodle has no flavor at all; we need something to stimulate our taste buds!"
Li Nan chuckled quietly, "What a clever girl you are, so quick-witted!"
Thinking about the dirty places, Li Nan couldn't help but smirk. If this girl's sharp tongue were used elsewhere, wouldn't that be wonderful!
Mo Xiaohui noticed the mischievous expression on Li Nan's face and became a bit suspicious. "What are you thinking about?"
"Ah! Nothing! I was just thinking that in this apocalypse, if we don't get bitten by zombies, we might starve to death!"
At this moment, Mo Xiaohui also looked troubled. "If that's the case, then this instant noodle isn't so bad!"
Mo Xiaohui turned her gaze to the window and asked, "It's raining outside; should we go out to look for food and water?"
Li Nan shook his head. "It's raining so heavily; we definitely can't go out. Let's search this building; we should be able to find some supplies!"
Mo Xiaohui nodded. "I'll follow your lead; if you tell me to go east, I won't go west!"
Li Nan wore a cheerful expression. "Is that really true?"
Mo Xiaohui suddenly recalled the incident from last night when Li Nan had spied on her, and instinctively covered her chest.
Li Nan stopped laughing, "I'm a decent person, okay? Don't make me sound like a pervert!"
Mo Xiaohui scoffed, "You really think you're not?"
By the time everything was tidied up, it was already one o'clock in the afternoon. Li Nan changed into a hoodie and threw his tattered clothes out of the window directly onto the ground below. Mo Xiaohui retorted, "You have no sense of public decency! Throwing things down like that could hit someone or damage the flowers and plants!"
She hadn't realized before that Mo Xiaohui was such a chatterbox and always played devil's advocate. Fortunately, Li Nan had mentally prepared himself for this, so he ignored her.
Feeling embarrassed, Mo Xiaohui tossed her own short skirt jacket out as well since it was too worn to wear anymore. However, she kept her underwear, which she had already washed in the bathroom and was waiting to dry.
Without any underwear, Mo Xiaohui felt quite awkward. She was wearing Li Nan's floral shirt, which was already oversized. With the buttons gaping open, her ample figure couldn't be concealed at all, leaving her vulnerable to Li Nan's gaze.
With no other choice, Mo Xiaohui decided to wrap the shirt around her chest like a makeshift bandage. While this covered her chest, it left her midriff and shoulders exposed. It seemed that to guard against Li Nan's lewd stare, she had to make some sacrifices.
The floral shirt wrapped around Mo Xiaohui's chest gave her an unexpected boldness. However, aside from her sharp tongue, this woman seemed to lack any other redeeming qualities!
After clearing her throat lightly, Li Nan finally shifted his gaze away and pretended to be a gentleman as he said, "We should get going!"
Li Nan led the way while Mo Xiaohui followed behind. After exiting the fifth floor, they climbed up to the top floor according to Li Nan's plan.
The building where Li Nan lived was constructed in the 1990s and was relatively old with only eight floors. His plan was simple: this afternoon he and Mo Xiaohui would search the building from top to bottom for anything useful—food or drink—that they could scavenge.
The scavenging plan sounded exciting. Although they weren't sure if there were still zombies in the building, Mo Xiaohui was very interested in participating in this treasure-hunting mission. Most importantly, she wanted to find some women's items; otherwise, life would be far too awkward!
After reaching the eighth floor, there were two unit doors on either side. Li Nan tested them, but both doors were tightly locked. He had no idea if there were any living people inside, or if they were zombies.
Li Nan was actually considering the current situation. The incident at Beiyuan Square happened three days ago, which meant that the entire Jiangbei City had been plagued by zombies for two to three days. At this point, how many survivors could possibly be left?
The transmission method of zombies is through biting or scratching, meaning this virus can only spread through direct contact, similar to bloodborne transmission. One could only become infected by coming into contact with a zombie's flesh. This meant that as long as one hid before the outbreak of zombies, it was possible to survive within those three days. The number of survivors should still be around ten to twelve percent!
With this in mind, Li Nan pressed the doorbells on both sides and called out in a soft yet penetrating voice, "Is anyone inside? We are not the Walking Dead!"
If there were people inside, they would surely respond to Li Nan, because psychologically speaking, people tend to conform, especially in situations like this.
A minute passed with no reply, so Li Nan concluded that there was no one inside. He then tentatively attempted to pry open the outer door to investigate!
Li Nan had brought a screwdriver from home. Although he didn't know how to open the door, he still tried to knock a few times. "As expected, breaking in is not something I can do!"
Mo Xiaohui focused intently on Li Nan's actions. How she wished that the door in front of them would open automatically so they could boldly act like a pair of robbers!
Just as Li Nan was applying force, a timid voice suddenly came from behind the door, "Who are you?"
