Cloaked Man was astonished. He couldn't understand how the man in front of him could move so quickly despite the injury on his shoulder. However, he didn't have time to think too much about it; he wanted this man's life, and he would make it happen.
With a low grunt, Cloaked Man saw Li Nan dodge the axe blade and chose not to pursue him. Instead, he turned his attention to Mo Xiaohui, who was half-kneeling on the ground, and with a swift motion of his blade, he aimed to strike her.
Mo Xiaohui was terrified, her eyes wide as saucers. Just as Cloaked Man was feeling pleased with himself, Li Nan suddenly shouted, "Stop!"
Cloaked Man did not halt his movement but caught a glimpse of Li Nan standing behind him. At that moment, he no longer cared about the man; he intended to play a game of cat and mouse, aiming for a strategy that would lead to unexpected results.
"Not killing her, are you going to kill me instead?" the cloaked figure sneered as the axe blade pressed against Mo Xiaohui's neck.
Li Nan shouted, "I would rather surrender; please don't harm her!"
That was exactly what Cloaked Man wanted to hear. He immediately turned around and asked, "Are you willing to take this axe for her?"
Li Nan nodded, and Cloaked Man burst into laughter. "How can there be such a foolish man in this world? Don't you know what happened to that woman in the building across from you? Even if you save her now, what will happen after you're dead? She might end up worse off than that woman!"
Standing behind the door with his right hand pressed against his shoulder, Li Nan pleaded, "I'm not that noble; I just feel that neither of us can escape. Since that's the case, I might as well offer my neck for slaughter. It’s simpler that way and saves me from witnessing your horrifying methods."
The laughter of Cloaked Man gradually faded as he remarked appreciatively, "I've never met someone like you before; you quite suit my taste. Perhaps I really could let you go!"
Li Nan remained unfazed and replied, "What suits your taste is probably not me but the flesh on my body!"
Once again, Cloaked Man laughed heartily. Just as he was enjoying himself, he suddenly turned around sharply, swinging his axe towards Li Nan, creating a gust of wind.
"I'm just messing with you! Did you really take me seriously?" Cloaked Man shouted. He had been preparing this move with complete confidence; it would surely be a lethal strike. Afterward, he could enjoy that charming little fairy!
Li Nan stood motionless in the doorway, his gaze fixed ahead, where the axe blade was approaching.
His right hand, tightly gripping his left shoulder, suddenly sprang into action. Hidden beneath his palm was a Screwdriver. As Li Nan's fingers twisted, the Screwdriver shot out from the inside of his palm, aimed directly at the Cloaked Man's throat.
The Screwdriver flew through the air and, in an instant, slipped from Li Nan's hand, reflecting the dim light of the chandelier. Before anyone could blink, it had pierced the Cloaked Man's throat, emerging from beneath his jaw and revealing a section of cross-patterned design at the back of his head.
At that moment, a crimson Fire Axe fell just inches from Li Nan's face, only three centimeters away, but the blade could no longer descend!
Li Nan grasped the Fire Axe with one hand again and swiftly turned it to snatch it from the dying man's grip.
The Cloaked Man's eyes widened in disbelief as he gasped, "How is this possible? How can it be..."
Li Nan leaned closer to the Cloaked Man, pulling out the Screwdriver that had already embedded itself deep into his skull. Instantly, the tightly wrapped head transformed into a bloody mess.
Li Nan hurriedly untied Mo Xiaohui's restraints and reassured her, "It's okay! It's all over now; the demons of hell will ultimately be sent back to hell!"
Mo Xiaohui was in tears as Li Nan gently wiped her eyes with his large hands. "If you keep crying, you'll become an ugly woman!"
Mo Xiaohui brushed off his comment and immediately threw herself into Li Nan's embrace. "Why are you so foolish? You actually risked your life for me!"
Li Nan smiled. "That was just a delaying tactic; you really took it seriously!"
Out of the corner of her eye, Mo Xiaohui caught sight of the man who had fallen to the ground, her expression revealing her distress. "You're right! We shouldn't easily trust strangers!"
Li Nan held Mo Xiaohui in his arms, offering some comfort. "The world is harsh, and those who are cooped up in school have no right to discuss humanity. You're still too naive, just like those college students. Remember, before the apocalypse, it was a time when people devoured each other; after the apocalypse, it can only get worse!"
Mo Xiaohui nodded, somewhat understanding, then stopped her tears and asked Li Nan, "What should we do now?"
Li Nan turned to look at the body on the ground that was still twitching and replied resolutely, "We can't stay here any longer; we need to leave!"
Mo Xiaohui was taken aback. "That person is already dead! Why do we still need to go?"
Li Nan explained, "This place is ultimately not suitable for long stays. There's not enough food or water. We can't wait until all resources are exhausted before we leave. And compared to the distortion of humanity, I would rather face the ugly Zombies!"
Mo Xiaohui stared at the Cloaked Man and noticed his body had already stiffened. She immediately said, "Okay! I'll listen to you!"
Li Nan turned back to check the Cloaked Man's body and confirmed he was indeed dead. Mo Xiaohui leaned closer, wanting to uncover the man's cloak.
Li Nan stopped Mo Xiaohui's hands, signaling her to forget it.
Mo Xiaohui said, "Don't you want to see what this insane person looks like? What kind of person could commit such atrocious acts?"
Li Nan shook his head. "There are too many ugly things in this world; we really don't need to disgust ourselves further. It's better not to see it!"
Mo Xiaohui responded with an "Oh," then asked, "Are we leaving now? It's dark outside and still raining!"
Li Nan lifted the Cloaked Man's body and threw it out of the living room window. He then turned and said, "Get a good night's sleep tonight! We'll leave tomorrow morning!"
The body that fell directly from the eighth floor landed with a splash in the water. In response, several wandering Zombies rushed over, tearing the corpse apart like wild dogs, scattering its organs everywhere.
Li Nan spat out of the window. "Compared to what you've done, this is letting you off easy!"
After dealing with the Cloaked Man, Li Nan took off his wet clothes, revealing a wound on his left arm.
Mo Xiaohui wanted to find some hemostatic medicine and thought of the bag she had brought from Jiangbei Hospital, which was filled with various hemostatic and pain relief medications.
"No need!" Li Nan shouted to Mo Xiaohui. When she turned around, she noticed that on Li Nan's smooth shoulder, there was only a thin line, completely unnoticeable as a scar!
Li Nan smiled. "My body has healing abilities! So there's no need to worry!"
Mo Xiaohui suddenly burst into tears of joy, murmuring, "I'm so glad to have you! Even in danger, you appear by my side like a superhero. It's so nice to be with you!"
Li Nan awkwardly smiled. "Who hasn't encountered a few scoundrels or heroes in their life? You're just luckier right now. If I had come back a moment later..."
Mo Xiaohui closed her eyes and smiled slightly. "Maybe! Good luck doesn't always stand by our side, so I need to try to protect myself and not let you worry about me anymore!"
"It would be great if that day comes. Maybe by then it won't be the end of the world but the birth of a new one!"
Mo Xiaohui also showed a hopeful expression. "A new world—just thinking about it makes me long for it!"
"That day will come sooner or later—a new order, a new society, a new nation will eventually bring an end to this apocalypse, and that era will belong to our world!"
Mo Xiaohui looked up at the man in front of her, who resembled a great hero, and said, "Alright! Let's work hard for the new world!"
Li Nan also smiled and replied, "Sure! Let's put the new world aside for now and get some sleep first. Resting up is important!"
Mo Xiaohui walked back to her room, while Li Nan busied himself in the living room. He first divided the bag of rice he had scavenged into several smaller bags and packed them into his Backpack. Then he stuffed some spare supplies inside as well, preparing for what lay ahead.
Li Nan moved the sofa and television in the living room to block the entrance. Since the door had already been destroyed, he needed to take precautions to prevent any unexpected incidents.
A pile of items completely blocked the doorway, which made Li Nan feel a bit more at ease. He then filled a large basin with water from the bathroom and splashed it on the floor to clean up any bloodstains or similar messes. Although they were leaving the next day, he still hoped to leave the place clean for their last night.
After working hard, Li Nan was drenched in sweat and wanted to take a shower but found that the water heater in the bathroom was broken. With no other choice, he poured a basin of water over his head!
Cold water cascaded down from his head to his feet as Li Nan stood naked in the bathroom, wiping his body with a towel.
He had been quite comfortable in the apartment these past few days, gradually coming to accept this world. This lifestyle wasn't bad; staying in one place felt peaceful. However, encountering that crazy Ogre had jolted him awake. In such a chaotic environment, it was not feasible to remain passive; he had to actively venture out. Surviving in this tumultuous era meant that he couldn't stay in this small haven for long!
He needed to face the outside world head-on, search for more supplies, and explore broader horizons. The issue of survival was pressing; he had to prepare adequately before true misfortune struck and fight against this age overrun by Zombies!
