Outside the car window, heavy rain poured down as night deepened. Li Nan leaned against the seat and slowly closed his eyes.
Mo Xiaohui was in a better mental state, constantly looking around. After Li Nan ignored her, she began to feel bored and started talking to the parrot behind her, saying, "Are you hungry?"
The parrot responded with a squawk, and Mo Xiaohui offered it some crumbs from her instant noodles. The parrot didn't hesitate and quickly grabbed the food.
Mo Xiaohui playfully interacted with the parrot for a while, but soon drowsiness overcame her. She reclined in her seat and fell asleep.
Li Nan's nerves were tense; he couldn't sleep. The chatter of Mo Xiaohui and the parrot filled his ears.
Initially, Li Nan wanted to stay awake and remain vigilant about his surroundings. However, thinking about the parrot in the car, which should serve as a warning, he decided that taking a short nap wouldn't be a problem.
With that thought, Li Nan relaxed his body and dozed off.
The night was hazy, with the sound of rain lingering, and tonight was no different from usual.
In the dim sky, a hint of moonlight appeared, and beneath its glow, a shadow quietly approached the large truck.
The figure was wrapped in a rainproof plastic sheet, crouching low as it moved towards a truck parked by the roadside. Once it confirmed that there was no one around, the figure boldly approached the driver's cabin.
Inside the cabin was dark; nothing could be seen. However, the figure seemed very confident. After gently knocking on the car door and receiving no response from inside, it stealthily moved to the back of the truck.
The figure carefully unlatched the chain on the back door and jumped inside. It had already pulled out a glass fiber bag and quickly began stuffing items into it.
In less than two minutes, the bag, capable of holding hundreds of pounds, was filled to capacity. The figure then jumped down from the truck, satisfied with its haul, and left with the heavy bag slung over its shoulder.
The chain on the back of the truck was secured again.
Li Nan woke up around four in the morning, when there was still little light, and the heavy rain outside showed no signs of stopping!
Li Nan felt a slight soreness in his shoulder. As he stretched his waist, one of his arms accidentally hit Mo Xiaohui on the head.
"Ouch!" Mo Xiaohui let out a soft grunt, then opened her eyes and glared at Li Nan. "What are you doing?"
Li Nan said apologetically, "My mistake. You can sleep a bit longer!"
Mo Xiaohui rubbed her eyes. "Your snoring is way too loud! You kept me awake all night, and just when I finally fell asleep, you woke me up!"
The parrot in the back seat also got disturbed and started squawking incessantly. Mo Xiaohui reacted, "Could there be a Zombie around?"
Li Nan grabbed the Fire Axe, put on his raincoat, and got out of the car to survey the surroundings. He didn’t see any sign of a Zombie, but as soon as he stepped out, he felt something was off; it seemed like a pair of eyes were watching him from somewhere nearby!
Li Nan shielded his eyes with his hand and looked into the distance but still saw nothing. However, the feeling of being watched lingered in his mind, refusing to fade away.
He shook off the water droplets from his body and jumped back into the driver's seat. He told Mo Xiaohui, "No Zombie, but I have a bad feeling. We should leave here as soon as possible!"
Mo Xiaohui shook her head. "Although the rain has weakened a bit, it seems we can't get out now!"
Following Mo Xiaohui's gaze, Li Nan noticed that the intersection they had passed yesterday was now completely flooded.
Mo Xiaohui said, "Do you see that streetlight sticking out over there? It should be about six or seven meters high, and now only half of it is above water. So you should know how deep that pond is ahead!"
At this point, Li Nan felt a surge of regret. The road ahead was already low-lying; why had he decided to stay here overnight during such heavy rain?
"It seems we really can't go down this road. Can you check the map for any other routes?"
Mo Xiaohui shook her head. "I looked at it yesterday; there's only this one road!"
Seeing the bitter expression on Li Nan's face, she immediately said, "Perhaps we still have other options!"
Li Nan pondered for a moment and replied, "There is a way; we can abandon this truck and walk around the route ahead!"
Mo Xiaohui frowned. "But there’s so much food in this truck. Are we really going to throw it away?"
Li Nan felt reluctant as well, but the rain showed no signs of stopping, and it was clear that the truck wouldn't make it through the upcoming stretch of road. This posed a dilemma.
In this post-apocalyptic world, the issue of human survival was laid bare, and Li Nan showed no pretense. Without food, he and Mo Xiaohui wouldn't last three days, while the truck contained at least five to six tons of food—an irresistible temptation for anyone.
Upon hearing Li Nan's suggestion, Mo Xiaohui's first reaction was to disagree. They had found this truck and its food by sheer luck; how could they just abandon it? Therefore, Mo Xiaohui proposed that since they couldn't proceed down the road, they could survive on the food in this location for a while and wait until conditions improved before making further plans.
After considering Mo Xiaohui's idea, Li Nan asked, "Are we just going to live in this truck?"
Mo Xiaohui pointed to a two-story building a few hundred meters away outside the window. "There's a building over there. It looks like it has been abandoned for a long time, but it can still provide shelter from the wind and rain. Why don't we go over there to stay temporarily?"
In truth, Li Nan was also reluctant to part with the food in the truck, so he reluctantly agreed to Mo Xiaohui's plan.
At that moment, daylight had already broken, and Li Nan once again picked up his Fire Axe as he got out of the truck. He turned to Mo Xiaohui and said, "Stay in the truck while I go check things out over there. If there's any danger, make sure to shout!"
Mo Xiaohui raised her Climbing Pick to signal that everything was fine, and Li Nan hurriedly exited the vehicle.
Li Nan had a strange feeling around him, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it, so he decided to set it aside for now and not dwell on it.
As he passed by the back of a large truck, Li Nan noticed that the chain on the back door seemed a bit off.
He leaned in closer and saw that the chain was wrapped three times around the door handle, while Li Nan clearly remembered wrapping it only twice when he took out a box of instant noodles yesterday afternoon.
"Something's wrong!" Li Nan jolted, immediately unfastening the chain and holding his Fire Axe at the ready.
Light streamed in, but Li Nan didn't see anything unusual, and the food inside the truck didn't seem to have decreased!
Li Nan felt dazed for a moment, then lowered his gaze and discovered a row of wet footprints!
Now Li Nan was certain that there were other living people nearby, and last night, someone had quietly sneaked into this truck and rummaged through it. Although not much was taken, Li Nan had begun to feel alert; living people were definitely more terrifying than Zombies!
Li Nan turned to look at the two-story abandoned building by the roadside, and his heart suddenly flipped.
He tightened his grip on the Fire Axe and stepped down from the road.
