According to reason, in terms of safety, the nearby construction site should be a good place, surrounded by fences and with buildings to shield from wind and rain. However, there were more than a dozen zombies lying around in disarray, which made Li Nan uneasy, so he did not move the camp there.
Due to Lei Dafu's uncertain safety, Li Nan always had to keep him close when taking action. Even though this slowed them down, Li Nan did not dare to be careless.
After giving Lei Dafu a slight treatment for his wounds and having Mo Xiaohui take out some anti-inflammatory medicine from the backpack to apply, it was about done. So in the end, Li Nan had Li Dapeng support Lei Dafu as the three men made their way to the construction site. Li Nan then dismantled the temporary housing there, moved it to the roadside of the truck, and reassembled it. This busy work took an entire afternoon.
As the sun began to set, Li Dapeng lay back on the road. Although the autumn wind was cool, the asphalt road had absorbed sunlight throughout the day and was warm, making it quite comfortable to lie on.
Lei Dafu leaned against the roadside and asked Li Nan, "What are you planning to do? Are you going to stay here?"
Li Nan shook his head, seemingly reluctant to answer the question. "We'll stay here for a few days and then make plans."
Lei Dafu said, "I know this road can lead out of the province. If you have the chance, why not venture out? Perhaps things outside are better."
Li Nan shook his head. "Although I'm not very clear about the outside world, Jiangbei City's situation is certainly not an exception. The communication systems across China or even globally must have collapsed; this is a global disaster. It would be the same no matter where we escape to."
Lei Dafu thoughtfully said, "At first, I was trapped on a rooftop trying to contact the outside world for help, but after many attempts with no results, I felt despair. I never imagined that the outside world would turn out like this!"
Li Nan started a fire by the roadside for warmth.
Li Dapeng huddled close to the fire while Lei Dafu intentionally kept his distance.
Li Nan did not call out to him but simply said, "I set up two makeshift houses by the roadside. Although they are quite crude, they are sufficient for shelter. You can choose one; the other will be for those two while I sleep in the truck's cab!"
Lei Dafu obediently chose the outermost house and directly crawled inside while the remaining three gathered around the fire for warmth.
Li Nan saw that Lei Dafu had already entered the simple room and said to Mo Xiaohui, "Don't worry, I'll keep an eye on him tonight. I won't let anyone have a chance!"
After a long absence, the sunny weather returned. Li Nan didn't know what significance the heavy rain over the past seven days held, but at least it had finally stopped! Just having escaped from danger, the skies cleared up; he wondered if this was a good omen.
Having escaped from the horde of zombies in the Small Buildings and encountered Lei Dafu, he wasn't sure what would happen in the future, but the current situation was already quite good. At least their safety was temporarily assured!
Li Nan didn't have much fondness for Lei Dafu; he had only reluctantly taken him in due to his previous knee injury. Although he couldn't figure out what exactly was wrong with Lei Dafu's knee, he remained cautious.
Sitting by the fire, Li Nan quietly stared at Lei Dafu's room. After entering, Lei Dafu's large body immediately collapsed onto the bedding, making a loud thud as he fell. Less than a minute later, they could hear snoring coming from inside!
The snoring was thunderous, and Li Nan smiled as he said to Mo Xiaohui and Li Dapeng, "You two should go to sleep too!"
Mo Xiaohui hesitated and said, "Are you really going to keep watch all night? Your body won't handle it. Let me take your place!"
"It's fine; my body is made of iron!" Li Nan replied before turning to Li Dapeng and asking, "Do you still have any bells?"
Li Dapeng nodded and pulled out three or four small bells from his pocket, along with some broken strings.
Looking at the bells in Li Dapeng's hand, Li Nan said, "Tie these bells around your room. If they ring, I'll rush over immediately!"
Li Dapeng was quick with his hands and soon finished setting them up. Li Nan patted his head and said, "You all go to sleep. With me here, everything will be fine!"
Mo Xiaohui led Li Dapeng into her house. The space inside was quite small, almost like a military tent. Li Nan's craftsmanship was rather poor; this little house couldn't block out rain or wind. However, in this apocalyptic world, Mo Xiaohui felt it was a decent place to sleep.
The firewood in the pit had burned down significantly, and the flames were getting smaller. A gust of autumn wind swept through, bringing a chill that made Li Nan shiver.
"It's so damn cold!" Li Nan muttered to himself, then grabbed some sand from the roadside to extinguish the fire. Wrapping his clothes around him, he jumped into the driver's seat of the truck.
The wind howled outside, resembling the roar of autumn, but Li Nan paid it no mind. "After autumn comes winter; things are only going to get tougher!"
Taking a break from the wind, Li Nan lay sideways in the passenger seat, his mind becoming more agile.
Compared to Lei Dafu at that moment, Li Nan was clearly more concerned about the situation with the Small Buildings. There was one thing he had not mentioned to Mo Xiaohui and Li Dapeng: the origin of that group of Zombies.
In fact, there were many doubts here. Li Dapeng must have had his suspicions as well, and Li Nan could never understand why Li Dapeng had not encountered even one or two Zombies during his days alone, while they had been swarmed by two groups of Zombies upon their arrival. It was rather strange!
Moreover, the most important thing was that those two groups of Zombies were actually the same group!
Li Nan clearly remembered leading that group of Zombies into a large warehouse, which was very sturdy; those Zombies could not escape. However, when he saw his raincoat draped over one of the Zombies, he could confirm that the least likely scenario had occurred!
At that moment, Li Nan was extremely alarmed. If that group of Zombies hadn't escaped on their own, then there must have been an external factor. What could have caused them to escape? Was someone deliberately letting them out?
Thinking of this, a chill suddenly ran down Li Nan's spine, and a bizarre image flashed in his mind: a cloaked man wielding a crimson Fire Axe, charging towards him!
Li Nan's pupils dilated suddenly as if he had just experienced a nightmare. He wiped away the cold sweat trickling down his forehead and muttered, "Impossible! Impossible..."
Just as Li Nan was still shaken by his thoughts, a rustling sound suddenly came from outside.
Li Nan looked up and saw through the dim night that a person emerged from a makeshift house nearby. After looking around for a moment, they stopped at the corner of the wall. Thirty seconds later, the figure shook as if adjusting their pants.
Li Nan smiled. "Looks like we have another quick Gunslinger here; took them only half a minute!"
Li Nan knew that it was Lei Dafu urinating, so he didn't pay much attention. After pulling up his pants, Lei Dafu walked back to his room.
Just a moment ago, Li Nan felt a bit out of sorts. Although the incident involving Small Buildings was quite strange, it was not something that couldn't be explained. Therefore, Li Nan was determined that there would definitely be no supernatural occurrences here!
In fact, Li Nan really wanted to return to that warehouse to figure out how the group of Zombies managed to escape. However, they had already moved far away and had long passed the location of that warehouse. Now, he couldn't go back, so this question in his mind might have to be buried for good.
Suddenly, Li Nan found himself laughing at the absurdity of the situation. Given what was happening now, he still had the energy to think about Small Buildings; he should focus on the present!
Just as Li Nan was bitterly smiling, the door of the truck was suddenly knocked on!
Li Nan looked out the window and saw it was Lei Dafu!
Li Nan opened the truck door and saw Lei Dafu with a panicked expression. He asked, "What's wrong?"
Lei Dafu spoke incoherently, "I think I just saw... a person!"
Li Nan exclaimed, "How is that possible? You must have seen things. There are Zombies around here, but how could there be a living person?"
Lei Dafu said, "When I got up to urinate earlier, while I was in the middle of it, I suddenly saw a white shadow flash by in the direction of the construction site. At that moment, I didn't think much of it and assumed it was some kind of field mouse or owl. But when I returned to my room, I realized that at night, there shouldn't be any white animals moving around, and that figure really looked like a person!"
Li Nan felt a wave of shock. Remembering past events, he thought about how that group of Zombies trapped in the warehouse had inexplicably escaped. Could it be that someone was actually trying to harm them?
Seeing Li Nan's startled expression, Lei Dafu took it as suspicion and quickly added, "When I was urinating, I saw a white shadow over by the construction site but didn't take it seriously. In an instant, it seemed like the figure noticed me and quickly ran away. I suspect they were watching us from over there and must have some ulterior motive—perhaps for this truck or something else?"
Lei Dafu was testing Li Nan's reaction, and Li Nan also paused for a moment before saying firmly, "I don't know what their intentions are, but one thing is certain: they definitely want to kill me!"
Lei Dafu was startled, but quickly regained his composure and said, "That figure has already run into the construction site. Should we chase after it?"
If there was a chance to uncover that person's true identity, Li Nan would definitely not let it go. However, just as he was about to step out, he suddenly noticed Lei Dafu. Leaving someone like him alone in the camp made him even more uneasy.
"Come with me to check out the construction site!"
Lei Dafu nodded, "No problem, but I have an injury on my leg. I'm afraid it might slow you down!"
Li Nan waved his hand, "It's already impossible to catch up with that person, but we can still take a look. That guy will definitely leave some traces behind!"
Li Nan got out of the car and pulled out a Rebar Javelin from the trunk. When he saw Lei Dafu coming over, he hesitated for a moment, wondering if he should pull out another one.
In the end, Li Nan relaxed his grip and returned the second Rebar Javelin, then said to Lei Dafu: "Let's go!"
Lei Dafu wanted to lean in and see what was in the trunk, but was stopped by Li Nan. He could only retreat reluctantly and then staggered along, following Li Nan toward the construction site.
