After five or six minutes of driving, they arrived beneath the Department Store Building.
Li Nan got out of the car and noticed a strong smell of blood in the air. He immediately said to Lin Hai, "There are probably quite a few Zombies inside, so be careful!"
Lin Hai closed the car door, slung the AK-47 over his shoulder, and replied, "This building should not have been searched by others; there might be plenty of supplies inside!"
In fact, Li Nan also noticed the subtle clues. Outside the building, several Landscape Trees stood tall, and the leaves on the ground were still intact, showing no signs of being trampled. This indicated that the building had likely not been searched by anyone else.
Li Nan drew his Compound Bow from his back, with a Feathered Arrow nocked, and walked ahead.
Pushing open the heavy glass doors, they found several corpses sprawled across the front desk area, completely devoid of flesh, leaving only a grim set of skeletal remains!
The bones were reddish-brown and still clung to many scraps of flesh and skin, lying on the floor in positions that were difficult for an ordinary person to comprehend.
Li Nan frowned and pointed his Compound Bow at them, confirming that these were corpses that had been gnawed on by Zombies; they had not yet transformed but were already stripped of flesh and bone.
Due to the lack of light, the first-floor lobby was quite dim. Li Nan took out his Wolf Eye Flashlight and scanned around, soon noticing a staircase on the eastern side.
"Over there!" Li Nan whispered urgently as he moved to the front.
Lin Hai hesitated for a moment but became more interested in the wall beside him.
Not hearing any footsteps behind him, Li Nan suddenly turned around and found Lin Hai staring at a wall in confusion.
Lin Hai said, "There's a Floor Plan hanging on this wall; it's the internal layout of this Department Store. Let's take a look at this first; it will save us time!"
Li Nan shone his Wolf Eye Flashlight over to see that Lin Hai was indeed correct and moved closer to examine it.
Li Nan kicked aside several corpses lying on the ground and stepped forward. In an instant, those skeletal remains seemed to move!
Li Nan sensed that something was off about the atmosphere here; it felt extremely cold. However, for now, they had to take risks in search of food!
The Wolf Eye Flashlight illuminated the Floor Plan on the wall. Li Nan quickly realized something was wrong. "This Department Store has quite a large foot traffic. Considering various vendors, it's easy for this building to have thousands of people inside. If those thousands have all turned into Zombies, can we handle it?"
Lin Hai's eyes lit up. "The two underground levels of this Department Store are interconnected large supermarkets; we can find anything we need down there!"
Li Nan also saw the display on the Floor Plan, "Looks like I didn't find the wrong person, you've got guts!"
Lin Hai had a blank expression and simply said, "It's just for a meal. If I don't fight hard now, I probably won't have another chance in the future!"
Just as Li Nan and Lin Hai were about to leave, a skeletal body at their feet suddenly twitched, and then a reddish-brown hand slowly climbed up Li Nan's ankle.
Feeling something unusual at his feet, Li Nan immediately shone the Wolf Eye Flashlight on the ground, revealing a skeleton with half a head remaining, propping itself up while its weathered teeth mechanically clashed together.
Seeing this scene, Li Nan was not surprised at all; he simply kicked the skeleton into pieces, and the grasping hand at his ankle separated from the body, remaining there by itself.
Li Nan smiled, "These sickly Zombies are really tenacious. They've been reduced to nothing but bones and still want to bite people. Truly unchangeable in their nature!"
Lin Hai used the stock of his AK-47 as a weapon to beat down several nearby skeletons.
Li Nan bent down and pulled off a severed hand from his ankle, its bones exposed with remnants of decaying flesh still clinging to it.
Not interested in the severed skeletal hand, Li Nan was about to toss it aside when he suddenly caught sight of something unusual out of the corner of his eye.
Under the light of the Wolf Eye Flashlight, that severed hand was covered in bite marks from gnawing animals!
Li Nan discarded the severed hand and shone the flashlight around, discovering that all the shattered bones in sight bore similar gnawing marks!
Li Nan silently cursed under his breath and immediately informed Lin Hai of his discovery, but Lin Hai dismissed it!
Lin Hai retracted his AK-47 and looked at the fragmented bones, saying, "It's normal for this building to have some rats; they're just flesh-eating rats. Nothing to be afraid of!"
Li Nan was unconvinced, "There's something you don't know. On the road leading into the city from the main highway, there's a Culvert. When I entered the city, I was ambushed by a giant Black-Furred Spider in that Culvert. I almost died. Do you know why that spider mutated to the size of an elephant?"
Lin Hai had been holed up in the camp and was not familiar with the outside world. However, he had heard about that Black-Furred Spider from others. "If humans can turn into Zombies, it's normal for spiders to mutate too! This world is already like this; we don't need to dig deeper!"
"No! You're wrong. Humans turning into Zombies is something I've always suspected is caused by a virus. The spider's mutation is definitely not just a coincidence. I've checked its lair before; do you know what it feeds on?"
Lin Hai was speechless. "It should feed on living things, right?"
Li Nan denied Lin Hai's answer. "They don't reject living things; however, there are fewer living people now than diamonds in caves. Do you think those things survive solely by devouring living creatures?"
Lin Hai followed Li Nan's thoughts and exclaimed, "Are those things feeding on Zombies?"
Li Nan nodded, "In the lair of that Giant Black Hairy Spider, I found countless severed Zombie limbs, and I have reason to believe that the spider mutated because it consumed Zombie corpses!"
Lin Hai was taken aback, "So you're saying that the rats that gnaw on these Zombie corpses could also mutate into that kind of monster?"
Li Nan swept the flashlight across the interior of the hall, "I'm just speculating. If those rats have also mutated, it means this city is already fraught with danger. Rats, cockroaches, ants—many things we thought we understood could be changed!"
Lin Hai asked Li Nan, "So what do we do now? Should we go in or retreat?"
Li Nan waved his hand, "It's too risky. We shouldn't linger here any longer; every moment we stay increases our danger. Let's get out quickly!"
Lin Hai stepped back while Li Nan used the Wolf Eye Flashlight to scan left and right, ensuring no danger was approaching within their line of sight.
As he was stepping back, Lin Hai suddenly stopped and quietly said to Li Nan, "It seems you were right, but now we can't leave!"
Li Nan abruptly turned around and saw a massive creature standing at the entrance!
