Li Nan walked at the forefront, the Vigo Knife in his hand already drawn. Behind him, Fatty and the others were also armed, ready to respond to any sudden outbreak of conflict.
The corridor remained dimly lit, with the pale white walls revealing faint traces of despair under the beam of the Wolf Eye Flashlight. The ceiling fan above swayed and occasionally emitted strange sounds, seemingly foreshadowing the unrest that was about to unfold.
Various rooms lined both sides of the corridor, but judging by the traces of Green Slime, that monster was likely lurking at the end of the hallway.
Li Nan and his group showed no interest in the surrounding rooms and wanted to avoid unnecessary complications. They focused intently on their respective directions, ensuring no hidden dangers would arise before they took action.
Li Nan knew very little about that monster and was unsure whether it was solitary or part of a pack. He had no idea if it had offspring or anything like that. However, since they had decided to take action, they needed to be resolute in their determination.
At the end of the corridor, there were no rooms but a staircase leading downwards, with green slime trailing down along with it.
Li Nan felt something was off. "Could that monster be deliberately luring us here?"
Upon this thought, Li Nan couldn't help but gasp quietly and immediately warned, "Stay alert! Be careful of ambushes!"
Due to their previous encounter, Fatty and the others were on high alert but found nothing dangerous.
After a brief minute passed without incident, Li Nan remarked, "We've been played; it must have gone downstairs!"
At that moment, Fatty behind Li Nan suddenly sniffed and said, "I smell something strange!"
Li Nan's nerves were taut, so he hadn't noticed any odors around him. However, given that it had been several months since the apocalypse began, it wasn't surprising for something odd to appear in this abandoned building—let alone strange smells! Therefore, Li Nan didn't take it seriously.
After pondering for a moment, Fatty said, "It's the smell of a Corpse. Could there be a Corpse here?"
Li Nan turned to look at Fatty. "It's normal if there's a Corpse; there's no need to take it seriously!"
As he turned back, Li Nan caught sight of a room behind him. A sign was posted on the doorframe that read "Laboratory" in large letters.
Seeing the handwriting on the cardboard, Li Nan was slightly taken aback and then muttered to himself, "We should go in and take a look!"
Fatty sniffed and said, "The smell of decay is coming from that room!"
Upon seeing the large characters spelling "Laboratory," Li Nan's heart stirred. Although he couldn't be sure of much, going in to take a look would definitely help them understand what was inside this abandoned building!
Bitter Melon had his doubts, but since Li Nan had made up his mind, he didn't say anything further. Although Li Nan always maintained the appearance of a frail scholar, there was an aura about him that subtly conveyed a compelling leadership quality, causing others to unconsciously follow his lead.
The door to the adjacent room was wide open, and as Li Nan approached, he indeed caught a whiff of a rotten smell, suggesting that something must have died inside.
Li Nan frowned slightly and then stepped into the room.
Under the beam of the Wolf Eye Flashlight, the room was quite messy, with high platforms and cages scattered haphazardly on the floor.
Li Nan did not rush in blindly; instead, he made sure there were no dangers inside before signaling the others to come in together.
This room had likely been a laboratory before, as could be inferred from the door panel, and the equipment inside consisted of various medical experimental tools. However, Fatty and the others couldn't make much sense of it.
Li Nan stepped on a pile of broken glass and noticed water stains at his feet. However, those stains had long evaporated and were covered with a layer of dark dust!
Li Nan reached down to touch something at his feet and found a patch of withered water plants. Then he turned his gaze to the left and spotted a table with an Experiment Record notebook on it.
Li Nan brushed off the dust covering the notebook and opened it, only to find a line that read, "Spinal Shock Experiment, Subject: Adult Toad..."
Upon seeing this, Li Nan had almost figured out what that monster was!
Fatty noticed Li Nan rummaging through something and immediately approached him, asking, "What are you doing? Did you find some treasure?"
Li Nan was not in the mood to joke with Fatty and simply said, "Look behind this high platform, is the smell of a corpse coming from there?"
Fatty nodded and leaned over. In the dim light of the Wolf Eye Flashlight, he spotted a corpse!
The body lay on the ground, missing half of its head. The remaining skull was filled with a somewhat viscous white substance that, at first glance, looked like tofu pudding!
The corpse was draped in a white lab coat, but it had been gnawed on by something, leaving half of its bare backside exposed. A vibrant flower was grotesquely displayed in the air, with a large clump of not-so-fresh feces emerging from it, which was quite disgusting.
Looking at the mangled body, Fatty shook his head. "This guy's death is really unappealing!"
Li Nan put down the small notebook labeled Experiment Record and began to look around, asking Fatty, "Can you tell how this person died?"
Fatty shook his head. "It doesn't look like he died from being suffocated by feces, does it?"
On the other side, Li Nan discovered another corpse, though it was not well-preserved; only a row of molars and a few vertebrae remained.
Bitter Melon and Lin Hai also approached to check. Aside from those two corpses, there were no other findings.
Li Nan pointed to the shattered pieces resembling fish tank fragments on the ground and said to everyone, "Initially, there should have been a medical experiment taking place here. The subject was an adult toad; however, the experiment never got underway before an accident occurred. The apocalypse struck, and the doctor conducting the experiment must have been bitten to death by an invading zombie. The person next to him was likely his companion; they share the same cause of death!"
Fatty did not understand what Li Nan was trying to say and asked, "With the apocalypse happening and so many people dying, what's so strange about that?"
Li Nan then asked Fatty, "Since these two doctors are dead, where did their experimental subject—the toad—go?"
Fatty pondered for a moment but saw no dead toad around and replied, "It probably ran away! What's so strange about that?"
Li Nan frowned. "It's not that simple!"
At that moment, Bitter Melon suddenly realized something and said, "Could it be that the thing we encountered is the Toad that escaped from the laboratory?"
Li Nan nodded, "That Toad ate the body of a person who was bitten to death by a Zombie before escaping the lab, which is why it mutated!"
Upon hearing this, Fatty was shocked. "What? The thing attacking us is actually a Toad? That's just disgusting!"
Li Nan replied, "Things are much worse than you think. Do you really believe there’s only one Toad kept in this laboratory?"
Fatty's jaw nearly dropped. "Are there other things as well?"
Li Nan picked up the Experiment Record from the platform again. "It clearly states here, along with corresponding medical experiments, that the subjects included rabbits, a Mouse, and even a monkey!"
Fatty glanced at a half-height iron cage in the corner, its door wide open. It must have contained that so-called monkey!
Feeling overwhelmed, Fatty exclaimed, "Are you saying there are three mutated monsters in this abandoned building?"
Li Nan shook his head. "Not three, but four. That Mouse has a pair!"
"Oh no!" Fatty barely caught his jaw. "How can we deal with this? One mutated Toad almost wiped us out, and now there are four more? Are they trying to ensure our complete demise?"
Li Nan's expression grew serious. "Now you understand just how dire our situation really is!"
Bitter Melon frowned as well. "Maybe it's still possible to leave now."
Li Nan said bitterly, "Leaving now might already be too late!"
As they spoke, a stream of green slime gradually dripped down from the wide-open door of the laboratory.
Bitter Melon did not understand the meaning behind Li Nan's words, but he said, "I have no choice, but you are different from Lin Hai. It's so dangerous here; if we don't leave now, we really won't be able to get out!"
Lin Hai had already raised his AK-47, aiming at the position outside the door, while Fatty also sensed something was off.
Li Nan did not respond to Bitter Melon's words; he simply shouted, "It's coming! Right above us!"
In an instant, Bitter Melon was extremely alarmed, and at that moment, a droplet of saliva suddenly fell from the ceiling.
Bitter Melon touched his forehead, feeling something green. Looking up, he saw a creature on the ceiling with eyes as big as pot lids staring intently at him.
Before Bitter Melon could react, the toad perched on the ceiling shot out its long tongue, wrapping around Bitter Melon's waist and then contracting its muscles.
Fatty was quick on the draw and fired a shot, but the toad seemed prepared. Instead of pulling Bitter Melon into its mouth, it flung him away, targeting Fatty who was about to shoot!
"Damn it!" Fatty cursed under his breath and immediately retracted his gun. In the next moment, Bitter Melon was thrown back and crashed into Fatty, knocking him to the ground.
Seeing that both Fatty and Bitter Melon had failed, Lin Hai raised his AK-47 at the same time. However, the toad moved swiftly, constantly changing positions on the ceiling, making it impossible for Lin Hai to aim. A few bullets were fired but all missed.
Li Nan observed the toad's movements and thought that with just the four of them, they definitely couldn't handle it. However, at this point, Li Nan and his companions had no choice but to either stand and die or bow their heads and seek death! But Li Nan was also a man of conviction; he would never go down without a fight!
