In a moment between life and death, Li Dapeng tightly closed his eyes, unwilling to face the world any longer. He was about to fall into the jaws of a Zombie, and his heart had already turned as cold as water. The person he cared about the most was Xin Qiqi, with her smiling face!
Was everything about to end? First, the girl he liked had left this world; was it now his turn?
At that moment, Li Dapeng felt little fear; he only felt unwillingness. He was not ready for his life to end like this. He had not avenged Xin Qiqi, nor had he expressed his feelings to her. Unfortunately, fate was unkind, and everything seemed to vanish into thin air.
A sense of helplessness suddenly appeared on Li Dapeng's youthful face. At his age, liking someone was so pure; he could give everything for her. Of course, at that moment, he did not understand what "everything" truly meant. However, when death approaches, there is often a moment of profound realization. A tear involuntarily flowed from the corner of Li Dapeng's eye, tracing down his cheek and landing on the collar of his shirt.
The cold tear rolled down from his eye socket onto his skin, feeling chillingly stark.
"Am I already dead?" Li Dapeng couldn't help but ask himself. But just then, he heard a loud sound that pierced through his eardrum!
At that moment, Li Dapeng truly felt as if the sky was collapsing and the earth was sinking; everything began to spin around him. Meanwhile, Li Nan, who was at the front, suddenly noticed Li Dapeng's perilous situation and rushed forward without thinking.
Just as Li Dapeng felt dizzy and disoriented, ten meters in front of him, Fatty had already lowered the muzzle of his Submachine Gun. It was Fatty who had just shot down the Zombie that attempted to attack Li Dapeng.
The Zombie's body slumped onto Li Dapeng, and the head that had wanted to bite him was already splattered with dark blood from being blown apart!
As the Zombie's body collapsed to the ground, Li Dapeng also fell face-first into the dirt.
Li Nan rushed over and pulled Li Dapeng into his arms, anxiously checking his body for any wounds from Zombie bites or scratches. Fortunately, aside from a slight abrasion on his forehead, there were no other injuries.
At that moment, Fatty also put away his Submachine Gun and stepped forward to say to Li Nan, "I acted quickly; there were absolutely no problems!"
Li Nan nodded and replied, "Thank you; this kid owes you a life!"
Fatty smiled wryly and said, "He's just a kid; there's no need to explain everything to him. Although I don't know what happened between you two, at his age, he really shouldn't have left the camp!"
Li Nan sighed with a bitter taste in his mouth, "This child is different. Although he is not my biological son, I have long regarded him as my own. Life is unpredictable; this is how our non-biological father-son relationship must end!"
Fatty shrugged, "In a father-son relationship, I can't say much. However, it's better to resolve grievances than to let them fester. A father-son feud should be clarified!"
Li Nan waved his hand, "Let's not talk about that. Just now, the bullet exploded near his eardrum, causing hearing damage and shocking him. He fell to the ground; he might have hurt his head. We need to get him back to the vehicle!"
At this moment, Li Dapeng had completely passed out, but he still clutched the Vigo Knife and Walther pistol in his hands.
Li Nan seemed to mock himself, "With weapons in hand, and still like this, it seems you really haven't grown up!"
Li Nan picked up Li Dapeng and stood up, intending to take him back to the armored vehicle.
Fatty asked Li Nan, "Should we end today's mission here? I think it's better to take this child back to camp first!"
Li Nan shook his head, "It's not a serious injury; it's nothing to worry about. However, I'm a bit uneasy leaving him alone in the armored vehicle!"
Fatty understood what Li Nan meant and immediately said, "How about I stay and keep this child company?"
Li Nan looked around at the others. He certainly couldn't stay in the armored vehicle himself; this mission was entirely personal for him, so he had no reason not to contribute. Lin Hai and A Fei were both rather stern individuals who could handle zombies without issue, but dealing with twelve-year-old Li Dapeng seemed beyond them. After considering it, he decided that Fatty was indeed the most suitable person to stay with Li Dapeng.
Li Nan nodded at Fatty and said, "Alright, you take Li Dapeng back to the armored vehicle. Lin Hai, A Fei, and I will continue searching for that special metal company!"
Fatty smiled at the two brothers, "Sorry for leaving you guys today; I'll rest in the armored vehicle while waiting for you!"
After saying that, Fatty carried Li Dapeng and turned back.
The distance to the parked armored vehicle was only about one or two thousand meters. Watching Fatty board the vehicle made Li Nan feel relieved. He then waved his hand at the two behind him and said, "We still have work to do; let's continue!"
Although Fatty made a joke earlier, neither Lin Hai nor A Fei took it seriously. Moreover, this mission was not particularly heavy and posed no real danger, so it couldn't be considered a tough job at all. Therefore, Fatty didn't gain much from it.
Li Nan once again drew his Compound Bow from his back and led Lin Hai and the others forward. He showed little interest in the building covered with signs, as the Zombie that had emerged there had already been shot dead by Fatty, so there was no need for any lingering attachment.
After Fatty helped Li Dapeng into the armored vehicle, he laid him flat on the back seat. He then pulled out a cigarette from his pocket and lit it, placing it between his lips.
As the smoke filled his lungs, a flush appeared on Fatty's face, seemingly enjoying it very much. Meanwhile, Li Dapeng, lying in the vehicle, began to shake his head and slowly sat up.
Feeling a buzzing sound in his ears and feeling quite dizzy, Li Dapeng shook his head a few times, which somewhat alleviated his discomfort.
Seeing that Li Dapeng had woken up, Fatty laughed and said, "Little brother, you really walked through the gates of hell this time!"
Focusing his gaze, Li Dapeng realized it was Fatty speaking. His first question was, "Am I still alive?"
With a wide grin, Fatty exhaled a large cloud of smoke before replying, "Of course! If you were dead, wouldn't I just be Fatty?"
Completely unaware of what had just happened, Li Dapeng only remembered a Zombie suddenly appearing behind him and reaching out with two bony hands. He had almost been eaten by it.
In his confusion, all he knew was that he heard a gunshot near his ear and then everything went blank.
Covering his forehead, Li Dapeng noticed some bloodstains but could confirm one thing: he was indeed not dead.
"What exactly happened?" Li Dapeng asked, while Fatty continued to puff on his cigarette.
"If it weren't for me, you would have really met your end at the hands of that Zombie. Aren't you going to thank me?"
At that moment, Li Dapeng recalled how Fatty had teased him earlier and retorted angrily, "If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have been caught off guard by that Zombie. It's all your fault..." As he spoke the last part, his voice grew quieter.
Fatty noticed something unusual and immediately asked, "What's wrong? Did that Zombie scare you so much that you need to change your pants?"
Li Dapeng did not continue to respond to Fatty. In that life-and-death moment, he had indeed thought of many things: the death of Xin Qiqi, the hatred of Li Nan. After such a brush with death, Li Dapeng felt utterly powerless. After his life was threatened, he realized he was even less capable than a wild dog jumping over a wall. If it weren't for Fatty, he might have really died!
Seeing Li Dapeng lost in thought, Fatty said nothing more. He took a drag from the cigarette butt in his hand repeatedly until it burned his fingers, then tossed it to the ground.
In the apocalypse, resource consumption is akin to the depletion of oil; eventually, everything will run out. Therefore, Fatty had no choice but to place great importance on a single cigarette butt.
With nothing to occupy himself, Fatty stood outside the car and looked around. He noticed that the surroundings of High-Tech Park were quite exquisite. Not far away was an exhibition hall resembling an Ecosystem, and there was even a botanical garden nearby!
Fatty muttered to himself, "With nothing better to do, they just create these Ghosts. If only they focused more on military engineering, this place could become a refuge like a paradise!"
Just as Fatty was joking around, Li Dapeng suddenly shouted from inside the car.
Fatty hurriedly leaned into the car but found that Li Dapeng was completely fine.
"What’s going on? Why are you shouting?" Now it was Fatty's turn to ask questions, but Li Dapeng's explanation made Fatty's nose flare with anger.
"It’s nothing; we’re even now about what happened before!"
Fatty widened his eyes in disbelief. "Damn it! I let this little brat play me for a fool, ruining my reputation!"
Li Dapeng didn’t care and was about to jump out of the car when Fatty stopped him. "Fine, you got one over on me, but don’t challenge my limits!"
Li Dapeng shouted back, "I want to go out! I want to kill Zombies! Don’t stop me!"
Fatty sighed with a bitter smile. "Alright! Little ancestor, you’re definitely going against me now. Just see if you can get out while I’m standing here!"
Li Dapeng's expression turned serious as he was about to pull out the Vigo Knife to stab Fatty. However, his speed and strength were completely insufficient in Fatty's eyes. Before he could make a move, Fatty had already seized both of his arms.
Li Dapeng struggled desperately, "Let me go, let me go!"
A smug look appeared on Fatty's face. "You little brat, you've got quite the temper! Brother Nan said you have to stay in the car obediently and can't go anywhere!"
Hearing the name "Li Nan," Li Dapeng struggled even more, but it was all in vain. As a twelve-year-old kid, it would be a miracle if he could break through Fatty's iron grip!
Just as Fatty was feeling pleased with himself, Li Dapeng's pupils suddenly constricted, and he shouted loudly, "There's something behind you!"
Fatty didn't even turn around and laughed heartily, "That trick won't work anymore; I won't fall for it a second time!"
Li Dapeng's face began to show signs of turmoil. "There really is something, and it's a ghostly thing!"
Fatty remained unconcerned. "No matter what you say, you definitely won't be getting out of this car before Brother Nan comes back!"
