"Benefactor?" Jiang Chen was puzzled. Upon closer inspection, it was indeed her. This female soldier was Mei Dong, whom he had rescued in Myanmar. Because she was in uniform, if Mei Dong hadn't called out to him, Jiang Chen wouldn't have recognized her at all.
Sitting in the driver's seat was another person Jiang Chen had saved, Jin Liu. Jin Liu also shouted to Jiang Chen, "Benefactor, get in the car! We'll give you a ride."
"What’s going on?" Jiang Chen asked in surprise. However, he quickly realized that when they were captured in Kunshan, they had been treated as spies. Although at that time neither Jin Liu nor Mei Dong had admitted to it, now that they were back in the country and wearing military uniforms, it was clear they were indeed undercover agents sent by the state.
"It's a long story; just get in the car first!" Mei Dong said.
"Is that really okay? Won't it violate your regulations?" Jiang Chen pondered. He thought military vehicles shouldn't carry passengers casually.
"It's fine; we're not on a mission right now. We certainly can't take passengers while on duty," Jin Liu replied.
Since they said so, Jiang Chen no longer hesitated and opened the door to sit in the back seat.
As soon as the door closed, the vehicle started moving again. Jiang Chen remained silent. He had figured things out for himself and didn't want to ask more questions. Although it was quite a coincidence to run into them here, he was merely hitching a ride for a short distance and likely wouldn’t encounter them again. Their matters were unrelated to him, so he felt no need to inquire further.
Jin Liu and Mei Dong did not explain anything, perhaps due to some disciplinary constraints, so they remained silent throughout the journey.
With the car, things changed quickly; they soon arrived in Chitai City. Just like before, Jiang Chen needed to return to Nangang City but had to fly from Chitai City first.
"Where should I drop you off?" As they entered the city, Jin Liu finally spoke up; he couldn't just let Jiang Chen off anywhere, especially since it was getting late.
"Take me to Chitai International Hotel!" Jiang Chen replied. This was the best hotel in Chitai City, a five-star establishment. Although he was dressed quite ordinarily, he was wealthy now; last time Hongmen had transferred him ten billion dollars all at once.
Jin Liu and Mei Dong exchanged surprised glances upon hearing this. From his attire, they had assumed Jiang Chen would settle for a regular inn, but instead, he wanted to stay at the finest hotel. However, upon reflection, anyone capable of taking down the drug lord from Myanmar must have no issues with money.
They soon arrived at Chitai International Hotel. As Jiang Chen got out of the car, Jin Liu and Mei Dong followed suit. Jin Liu shook Jiang Chen's hand and said, "Benefactor, our identities are special; we can't invite you for dinner. We can only take you this far."
"That's alright. I understand. Besides, I'm used to being alone and can manage with a simple dinner," Jiang Chen replied gratefully.
"It’s nothing; giving you a ride is just a small favor compared to what you did for us," Mei Dong said as she also shook hands with Jiang Chen to bid farewell.
After shaking hands, Jin Liu and Mei Dong turned back to their vehicle and drove away. Jiang Chen suddenly felt a familiar vibe from them but didn’t dwell on it; he thought their encounter here was merely coincidental and didn’t consider that they might meet again in the future—if that happened, it would no longer be a coincidence.
Jiang Chen turned and entered the hotel, requesting a presidential suite. The front desk staff were surprised by his request given his ordinary appearance but quickly processed his check-in without showing any surprise since they were professionals at a five-star hotel.
Jiang Chen enjoyed a good night's sleep; it had been a long time since he had slept comfortably in a bed.
The next morning after breakfast, he took a taxi to the airport and bought a direct flight ticket to Nangang.
After landing, he took another taxi straight to Huafei Villa. On the way, he sent Lin Yin a message informing her of his return and that he would be home soon. Lin Yin greeted him at the door. Upon seeing him, she immediately wanted to hug him and playfully scolded him, "You've been gone for so long!"
Jiang Chen shyly declined the hug; after all, they weren't married yet! Moreover, there were security personnel and housekeepers nearby. They were also excitedly greeting him: "Director Jiang is back! We all missed you!"
Jiang Chen responded warmly, "I’m sorry for making everyone worry; I missed you all too!" He then turned to Lin Yin and said, "Let’s go inside and chat."
Once inside and with the door closed behind them, Lin Yin threw her arms around Jiang Chen excitedly and exclaimed, "You just got back; I missed you so much!" Her demeanor resembled that of a newlywed welcoming her husband home after a long absence. With no one else around to see them, Jiang Chen allowed her embrace before they both settled onto the sofa where he briefly recounted what had happened during his time away.
"Does that mean you've reached the pinnacle of the martial world now?" Lin Yin asked. Jiang Chen had explained his cultivation journey to her as Seclusion for Cultivation. He didn't want Lin Yin to know he had become an immortal; he just wanted her to believe he was highly skilled in martial arts. For now, Jiang Chen wasn't ready to go to the immortal realm; he wanted to enjoy a bit more of his life as a human.
Jiang Chen nodded, then took out his phone and sent a message to relevant contacts, including Old Qin, Teacher Gong, Zhuyong, Ma Wenlai, Zhou Dafeng, and the Li brothers, Li Huailong and Li Huaihu, informing them of his return.
Some recipients replied with messages, while others called. Most were concerned about Jiang Chen's recent disappearance and where he would be spending the New Year. Jiang Chen responded that he would be in Nangang for the New Year and that he had been out for Seclusion for Cultivation.
After dinner, Old Qin called.
"Director Jiang, you've been missing for several months. You've finally returned today? It's already the twenty-eighth day of the twelfth lunar month; the Lunar New Year's Eve is just two days away. Are you spending the New Year in Nangang? You're still single; why not come to my house for the celebration?" Old Qin sounded quite cheerful. Despite Jiang Chen being very young, Old Qin never referred to him as "Xiao Jiang."
"Old Qin, I plan to spend the New Year in Nangang this year. However, I don't want to trouble you. I'll come by your house to pay my respects during the New Year!" Jiang Chen replied.
"Director Jiang, you're being too polite. Not only are you my granddaughter Shasha's savior, but you're also my benefactor. As the ancients said, a drop of kindness should be repaid with a fountain of gratitude. Besides, saving a life is far more significant! Coming to my house for the New Year isn't a burden; it's merely accepting our small token of gratitude. And Shasha has grown up quite a bit since returning from university. She hasn't seen you in a long time and wants to catch up!" Old Qin spoke without any pretense.
Jiang Chen chuckled, "Old Qin, you're too kind! You gave me a company; isn't that already repaying my kindness?"
"That's just a small gesture. No matter how big the company is, it can't compare to saving a life. Director Jiang, there's another important reason for inviting you over for the New Year: Shasha's parents are coming back this year to celebrate and thank you in person!"
"Shasha's parents? Didn't you say they were no longer in this world?"
"Oh dear, I must be getting old and forgetful! I forgot to tell you that Shasha's parents are still alive!" Old Qin's voice clearly brightened with excitement.
