"What should we do?" Lin Fan asked despairingly as he looked at the approaching cliff.
"Don't worry, I have a plan," Professor Zhang replied calmly, his gaze sweeping over the dashboard as he pressed a red button.
"Boom—"
The Camper Van roared to life, and suddenly two blue flames shot out from the chassis, causing the vehicle to shake violently. Lin Fan and Xiao Tang clung tightly to their seats, fearing they might be thrown out.
"What is this?" Lin Fan asked in terror.
Before Professor Zhang could respond, the Camper Van had already taken off, transforming into flight mode and soaring over the cliff.
The black SUV slammed on its brakes at the edge of the cliff, its occupants staring in disbelief at the airborne Camper Van.
"How... is this possible?"
"What the hell is that thing?"
"Chase! Follow it!"
The black SUV turned around, seeking another route to continue pursuing the Camper Van.
Meanwhile, the Camper Van had already flown away from the cliff, circling in the air before heading off into the distance, disappearing into the horizon...
---
"Xiao Fan, hurry! Throw me the toolbox!" Professor Zhang shouted as he rapidly spun the steering wheel, the Camper Van bumping along the desolate Gobi Desert.
Lin Fan snapped back to reality from his panic, disregarding the pain in his arm as he grabbed the toolbox and threw it toward the driver's seat. The toolbox arced through the air, and Professor Zhang caught it steadily, pulling out a wrench and smashing it against the flashing red light on the dashboard. The red light went out, and the blue flames beneath the Camper Van also disappeared, causing it to crash heavily to the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust.
"Cough cough..." Lin Fan choked and coughed as dust filled the cramped cabin, making it hard to breathe. Xiao Tang covered her nose and muttered in dissatisfaction, "It's so choking..."
"Forget about that for now," Professor Zhang said, panting heavily. "The flight mode can't last long; we're low on energy. We need to find a safe place to hide quickly."
"But there's nothing around here; where can we go?" Lin Fan looked out at the endless Gobi Desert, filled with despair.
"Head east; I remember there’s an abandoned research facility over there," Professor Zhang pointed to a mark on the navigation device.
Lin Fan followed Professor Zhang's finger and saw a blurry red dot flashing on the navigation screen.
"I hope we can get there before those guys catch up," Professor Zhang said quietly, a hint of worry flashing in his eyes.
The black SUV did not give up the chase; they maneuvered around cliffs, closely following the tire tracks left by the Camper Van. Wang Qiang sat in the passenger seat, holding a modified tablet that displayed the real-time location of the Camper Van.
"Boss, they seem to be heading east," said the man in the driver's seat, named Li Hu, who was Wang Qiang's capable assistant.
"Hmph, they won't escape," Wang Qiang sneered. "Notify everyone to speed up; we must catch them before dark. And remember, I want them alive, especially that little girl."
"Understood!" Li Hu replied and slammed down on the accelerator. The black SUV roared forward, kicking up a storm of dust.
The Camper Van struggled across the rugged Gobi Desert, its bumpy ride making Lin Fan and Xiao Tang uncomfortable. Lin Fan looked at Xiao Tang with concern and asked, " Xiao Tang, are you okay? Is anything bothering you?"
Xiao Tang shook her head; she seemed accustomed to such a bumpy journey and instead looked out at the scenery with interest, occasionally exclaiming in awe.
"Wow! What is that? It looks like a giant lizard!" Xiao Tang pointed at a large rock in the distance outside the window.
Lin Fan followed Xiao Tang's finger and saw that it was just an oddly shaped boulder that, under the sunset's glow, resembled a massive beast lying on the ground, exuding an ancient and desolate aura.
"That's just a rock, not a lizard," Lin Fan explained with a smile.
"Oh..." Xiao Tang replied somewhat disappointedly, but she was quickly distracted by something else.
"Lin Fan, can you help me look at the map? I seem to have misplaced my reading glasses," Professor Zhang's voice came from the driver's seat.
"Sure, I'll be right there," Lin Fan said as he got up and walked over to the driver's seat to pick up the map for a closer look.
It was an old map that had seen better days, marked with some research facilities and military bases, but many areas were already faded and unclear.
"Professor Zhang, where are we right now?" Lin Fan asked, pointing to a blank area on the map.
"It should be around here," Professor Zhang said, indicating a red dot on the map. "See, this is where we're headed; it shouldn't be far from us."
"But there are no markings here at all?" Lin Fan questioned in confusion.
"That's classified; it won't be marked on the map," Professor Zhang explained. "Don't worry, I've been here before; I won't be wrong."
Lin Fan nodded and didn't ask further questions. He trusted Professor Zhang and his own instincts; they would surely find that place and escape this ordeal.
As the sun set and darkness fell, the Gobi Desert was bathed in a blood-red hue, making it appear even more desolate and terrifying. The camper van finally arrived at their destination before nightfall.
