"Such big words!" The burly man sneered, "Brothers, let's go after them!"
Lin Fan's heart sank; he knew things were likely to end badly today.
He quickly picked up Xiao Tang and turned to run. "Don't let them escape!" A furious shout came from behind, accompanied by hurried footsteps.
Lin Fan ran desperately, but he was just an ordinary person with limited stamina, and soon he felt exhausted. As he ran, he scanned the surroundings, hoping to find a place to hide.
"Up ahead is Misty Canyon!" Xiao Tang suddenly pointed ahead and said, "I came here with my dad before."
Lin Fan looked up and saw nothing but a white haze; everything was unclear. "Misty Canyon?" Lin Fan's heart skipped a beat; he knew this place was said to have a complex terrain filled with dangers, including Mutated Zombies.
"We don't have time; we can only take a gamble!" Lin Fan gritted his teeth and plunged into Misty Canyon.
...
Thick fog surrounded Lin Fan and Xiao Tang like a wall. "Cough cough..." Lin Fan couldn't help but cough; his throat felt as if it were on fire.
"Xiao Tang, are you okay?" Lin Fan asked, looking down at her with concern in his voice.
Xiao Tang shook her head; although she was a Zombie, she seemed unfazed by this environment.
Lin Fan took a deep breath, enduring the discomfort in his body, and continued to pull Xiao Tang forward.
In Misty Canyon, the light was dim, the path was rugged, and there were jagged rocks everywhere; one misstep could lead to a fall.
Lin Fan walked cautiously; he didn't know how long he had been walking or where he was, only relying on his instincts to move in one direction.
"Roar..."
Suddenly, a deep roar echoed from ahead, filled with anger and threat.
Lin Fan immediately stopped in his tracks, warily scanning his surroundings but seeing nothing.
“Roar…”
The roar sounded again, this time closer, and Lin Fan could even feel the ground trembling slightly.
“ Xiao Tang, be careful!” Lin Fan shielded Xiao Tang behind him, gripping a branch he had picked up from the ground tightly, ready to fight at any moment.
“Roar, roar, roar…”
A series of roars erupted, and Lin Fan finally saw them—a group of Mutated Zombies appeared not far in front of them!
These Zombies were enormous and grotesque, their skin a sickly gray-green, with exposed fangs and sharp claws, emanating a nauseating stench of decay.
“So many Mutated Zombies!” Lin Fan gasped; he knew he was likely doomed today.
“Roar!” One particularly large Mutated Zombie charged at Lin Fan and Xiao Tang. It moved with incredible speed and was suddenly right in front of Lin Fan.
Instinctively, Lin Fan raised the branch to defend himself, but the Mutated Zombie's strength was overwhelming, and the branch snapped instantly.
Lin Fan was knocked back by the Mutated Zombie, crashing heavily to the ground; he felt as if his bones were about to shatter.
“Lin Fan!” Xiao Tang exclaimed in shock. Without hesitation, she rushed in front of Lin Fan, spreading her arms to block the attack from the Mutated Zombie.
“Get away!” Lin Fan struggled to get up but found himself powerless, helplessly watching as the Mutated Zombie's claws reached for Xiao Tang.
“Clang!” A crisp metallic sound rang out as the claws of the Mutated Zombie were unexpectedly blocked by something.
Lin Fan looked up to see Professor Zhang standing in front of Xiao Tang, holding a sharp dagger that had appeared in his hand at some point.
“Professor Zhang!” Lin Fan exclaimed in surprise.
“Are you both okay?” Professor Zhang asked with concern etched on his face.
"It's okay." Lin Fan shook his head as he struggled to get up from the ground.
"Be careful!" Professor Zhang suddenly shouted, pushing Lin Fan and Xiao Tang aside.
It turned out that the Mutated Zombie, which had been blocked from attacking, did not give up. It swung its claws again, reaching for Professor Zhang.
Professor Zhang sidestepped and thrust his dagger out like lightning, striking the Mutated Zombie in the eye.
"Roar..." The Mutated Zombie let out a painful scream, covering its eye and wildly swinging its claws, but it could never touch Professor Zhang.
"Run!" Professor Zhang shouted to Lin Fan and Xiao Tang. While fending off the Mutated Zombie's attacks, he covered their retreat.
Lin Fan knew this was not the time to hesitate. He grabbed Xiao Tang and turned to run.
"Roar, roar, roar..." A series of deafening roars echoed behind them. Lin Fan knew that the Mutated Zombies were still chasing them.
...
Lin Fan and Xiao Tang followed Professor Zhang as they weaved through Misty Canyon. They had no idea how long they had been running or where they were headed.
"There’s a path ahead!" Professor Zhang pointed forward, his tone filled with excitement.
Lin Fan and Xiao Tang looked up and indeed saw a narrow path appearing ahead. On either side of the path were steep cliffs shrouded in mist, making it impossible to see the bottom.
"Let's go!" Professor Zhang stepped onto the path without hesitation.
Lin Fan and Xiao Tang followed closely behind, carefully walking along the path, afraid that one misstep would send them tumbling down.
...
Finally, they emerged from Misty Canyon, and their surroundings opened up before them.
"We're safe!" Professor Zhang let out a long sigh of relief, wiping the sweat from his forehead, a look of contentment spreading across his face.
Lin Fan and Xiao Tang also breathed a sigh of relief as they slumped to the ground, gasping for air.
"Lin Fan," Professor Zhang said, looking at Lin Fan, "have you ever wondered why those people wanted to capture Xiao Tang?"
"I don't know," Lin Fan shook his head, feeling puzzled himself.
Professor Zhang sighed and said, "Because Xiao Tang is special. She is the first intelligent Zombie, and her existence might overturn humanity's understanding of Zombies."
"Overturn understanding?" Lin Fan looked at Professor Zhang in confusion.
"That's right," Professor Zhang nodded. "For a long time, humanity has believed that Zombies are mindless creatures without thoughts or feelings, but Xiao Tang's emergence proves that this understanding is wrong."
"So, Professor, do you really think it's possible for Zombies and humans to coexist peacefully?" Lin Fan asked.
Professor Zhang was silent for a moment before replying, "I don't know, but I believe that one day, humans and Zombies will find a new way to coexist."
Lin Fan gazed into the distance, lost in thought.
