“Zzzz…”
Accompanied by the gentle chirping of cicadas, a figure slipped over the tall wall of the Cold Family Garden at dawn, avoiding the gaze of the guards, and headed alone towards the Heavenly Shadow Mountain Range.
The figure appeared somewhat slender, yet stood tall with a straight posture, exuding a vigorous aura.
Footsteps were quick, agile, and in the blink of an eye, the figure disappeared at the end of the street.
“Hey, hey, hey, wake up! Stop sleeping!”
From a concealed spot came a faint voice.
“What are you doing... I haven’t even slept for half an hour yet...”
A burly man resembling a woodcutter rubbed his sleepy eyes and muttered reluctantly.
“Sleep, sleep, sleep! All you do is sleep!”
The speaker was leaner but dressed similarly to the former, both disguised as ordinary woodcutters. Unlike the latter's drowsiness, his shrewd little eyes sparkled with cunning.
“I’m telling you, Sun Wu, isn’t it your turn to keep watch? Why are you messing with me? I haven’t had enough sleep!” The burly man complained and closed his heavy eyelids again.
Smack!
The lean man named Sun Wu didn’t hesitate to slap the burly man and whispered angrily, “Damn it, why do I have to be stuck with a useless person like you?” At this point, Sun Wu’s expression changed slightly as he said uncertainly, “I think I just saw a shadow flash by.”
The burly man perked up immediately after being slapped by Sun Wu but was also extremely annoyed. He retorted, “Who are you telling about shadows? It was your turn to keep watch!”
Sun Wu was taken aback by this and found himself at a loss for words. Indeed, it was his responsibility during that time.
Thinking of this, Sun Wu chuckled and leaned closer, speaking sweetly, “Right, right, it’s my fault. But think about it—why did the master send us here? Isn’t it to monitor that Ye Tian’s movements?”
"Yeah, so what?" the big man said, somewhat confused.
"You said we’ve been here suffering together, right? Isn’t it uncomfortable?" Sun Wu continued to set the trap.
"Uh-huh..." The big man nodded repeatedly. They had been waiting there for two days and nights, and it was indeed quite uncomfortable.
Seeing this, Sun Wu chuckled coldly to himself. He had also been drowsy earlier and hadn’t seen the figure clearly, but since he had such a fool beside him, this matter could be easily resolved.
"Buddy, I thought about it carefully. That figure must be Ye Tian without a doubt." After saying this, he took out a scroll from his sleeve, which depicted a person—Ye Tian.
Sun Wu pointed at Ye Tian's features in the painting and exclaimed, "That's right; it can't be wrong."
Upon hearing that there was progress in their mission, the big man perked up immediately and said with wide eyes, "Since he has come out, should we report back?"
Sun Wu nodded, his eyes filled with praise. "Buddy, here's the deal: you go back to report while I keep an eye on things here for a bit longer."
The big man nodded in response and said with some emotion, "Since that kid has already come out, we might as well go back together to report. Why should you suffer here alone?"
"Hey, think about it. If that kid comes back again, wouldn’t we be lying in our report?" A hint of cunning flashed in Sun Wu's eyes.
"Right! You’re so thoughtful. I’ll head back to notify them now!" The big man patted Sun Wu on the shoulder and then quickly disappeared into the street.
Once the big man was gone, Sun Wu smirked mockingly and thought to himself, "What a fool. You go back to report; if the news is wrong, it’s your problem. If it’s right, I have my ways to take credit."
With a few sinister chuckles, Sun Wu settled down comfortably against the wall and fell asleep.
These two were Xu Tai's eyes and ears placed around the Cold Family according to Wu Xiaozhuang's plan. Wu Xiaozhuang was meticulous in his thinking; he considered that if someone skilled in martial arts were sent to handle this matter, any inadvertent leakage of energy might raise suspicion. Thus, he chose these two ordinary servants.
It should be noted that these two servants were carefully selected by Wu Xiaozhuang. However, among the ordinary servants of the Xu Family, there were very few who could guarantee they wouldn’t leak any information. After much deliberation, he could only select these two: the thin one named Sun Wu was clever-minded; the robust one named Chen Long was bolder.
Although not entirely satisfactory, they had no choice but to make do with them to avoid drawing attention.
"Sister Frost, we agreed that no matter whether we find Ye Tian before dark or not, we must return."
The faint voice startled Sun Wu awake. He covered his mouth and yawned, then looked towards the entrance of the Cold Family.
The door opened, and two figures stepped out.
One was strikingly handsome and graceful, while the other had delicate features and a charming appearance. It was Cold Yang and Cold Frost, the brother and sister duo.
"Young Master Yang, Miss Frost!" The guards bowed respectfully, their tone filled with reverence.
The two smiled back at them as a sign of respect.
"Sister Frost, did you hear what I said?" Cold Yang, who was usually adept at handling various situations, found himself at a loss when it came to his sister.
A hint of impatience crossed Cold Frost's pretty face as she repeatedly said, "I know, I know, I know!"
With a light sigh, Cold Yang chose not to say anything further.
It turned out that Ye Tian had sneaked away and was discovered by Cold Frost, prompting her to insist on searching for him. Cold Yang couldn't refuse her but also couldn't bear to let her go out alone during such a precarious time. Thus, he reluctantly decided to accompany her towards the Heavenly Shadow Mountain Range.
"Brother Yang, you must keep an eye on Xiaoshuang. Don't let her wander off; things are quite unstable right now."
Cold Yang recalled Ye Tian's words from the previous night and stopped in his tracks, pleading, "Sister Frost, I beg you, let's not go."
With this sister who wouldn't listen to reason or scolding, his only option left was to plead.
"No way!" Cold Frost pouted defiantly.
"It’s not negotiable!" Cold Yang pretended to be angry.
Cold Frost was taken aback; she hadn't expected Cold Yang to actually raise his voice at her.
"I don’t need you to come with me; I’ll go myself!" With a stomp of her foot, Cold Frost left Cold Yang behind and walked ahead.
"You're really something..." Cold Yang sighed helplessly and self-deprecatingly said, "When have I ever been brought to this point by a girl..."
Indeed, this boy who had captivated the women outside was utterly helpless when facing his sister.
Upon hearing this, a charming dimple appeared on Cold Frost's face as she smiled sweetly and said, "I knew Brother Yang was the best!"
"Pfft. Brother Yang is nothing special. If I were really that great, you wouldn't be able to make things difficult for me," Cold Yang rolled his eyes at her, clearly unappreciative.
Cold Frost wasn't angry; instead, she said seriously, "Brother Yang, I'm not trying to make things difficult for you. I'm genuinely very worried about Ye Tian. Every time he goes out..."
"Alright, alright! I'll go with you. Just don't start crying," Cold Yang interrupted the girl who was about to cry and took big strides ahead.
Cold Frost giggled and quickly followed him.
The two figures soon disappeared at the end of the street, while Sun Wu, hiding in a concealed corner, felt excitement in his heart. He had overheard their entire conversation and could now confirm that the figure from before must be Ye Tian without a doubt.
Thinking of this, Sun Wu wiped his lips. As long as he successfully relayed this information back to the Xu Family, the generous reward promised by the family head would be his.
...
At the Xu Family's location, a small team of thirty people was currently gathered. Although their numbers weren't large, one could tell from their physique and spirit that this team was definitely composed of elite guards.
At the forefront of the team stood a gaunt old man against the wind. His hunched figure seemed as if it could hardly withstand even the breeze, yet at this moment, he exuded an intimidating aura.
A flash of brilliance suddenly shot from his chaotic eyes as he turned around and waved his hand, speaking with some excitement, "Let's go!"
The sound of footsteps echoed one after another. They chose not to ride horses to avoid drawing too much attention; however, even so, the sound of their footsteps resonated in the quiet street.
Watching the departing team, Xu Tai's eyes twitched slightly as he said in a deep voice, "Ye Tian! It's time for you to pay for Xiao Er's life!"
Clap! Clap! Clap!
The crisp sound of applause rang out as Wu Xiaozhuang walked over to Xu Tai with a beaming smile, complimenting, "The Xu Family truly has hidden talents. I believe this group of guards must all possess the strength of Three-Stage Warriors, right? Plus, with Elder Zhang personally stepping in with his Withered Heart Finger, I reckon Ye Tian will have no chance of escape this time!"
"Heh heh, hidden talents are an overstatement. This group of guards pales in comparison to you, the top guardian of the Cold Family," Xu Tai replied. He was not one for words and had previously shown this during his verbal sparring with Cold Boyuan at the Martial Arts Selection Tournament. Now, wanting to praise Wu Xiaozhuang, he ended up saying something like this.
Upon hearing this, a trace of barely perceptible anger flashed in Wu Xiaozhuang's eyes as he sneered inwardly, "Are you using the Cold Family title to mock me, you fool? Heh heh, I won't hold it against you. As my pawn in bringing down the Cold Family, your role is quite significant."
"The Xu Family is too kind," Wu Xiaozhuang said with a composed bow. His schemes ran deep; if he didn't admit it himself, Xu Tai would probably never realize.
"Heh heh, Xiao Zhuang, you're being modest!" Xu Tai patted Wu Xiaozhuang on the shoulder and even appeared quite friendly.
A hint of sarcasm curled at the corner of Wu Xiaozhuang's mouth before he returned to normal. He laughed heartily and said, "Not modest at all; it's the Xu Family who is mistaken."
Still oblivious to any oddities, Xu Tai laughed heartily as well and put his arm around Wu Xiaozhuang's shoulders, saying, "Come on, let me buy you a few drinks!"
"Heh heh, let's wait until they bring back Ye Tian's head before we drink," Wu Xiaozhuang replied coolly as he pushed Xu Tai's hand off his shoulder. He held a deep-seated contempt for someone as foolish as Xu Tai.
"Withered Heart Ghost, don't let me down!" Wu Xiaozhuang's gaze drifted far away. Compared to Xu Tai, the Withered Heart Ghost was his unexpected delight; with this person on board, the success rate of ambushing Ye Tian would skyrocket!
