"Madam is right; I feel at ease with you handling things." Aunt Wang sighed, no longer speaking, and turned to the kitchen to prepare afternoon tea.
I got up and walked to the floor-to-ceiling window, gazing at the bustling city outside, my thoughts racing.
I knew that this charity gala was just the beginning; the competition between Lin Jiaojiao and me had only just begun.
"Lin Jiaojiao, let's see who will be laughing in the end!" I silently vowed to myself.
In the evening, a black Maybach slowly drove into Jiang Family Villa.
I was sitting in the living room enjoying tea when I heard the sound of the car engine, knowing that Jiangcheng had returned.
I set down my teacup and got up to greet him.
"A-Cheng, you're back," I said with a kind smile and a gentle tone.
Jiangcheng looked at me, slightly taken aback, then revealed a faint smile. "Mom, why are you out here?"
"Why? Am I not welcome to come out?" I pretended to be displeased and shot him a glance.
"Of course not! You can come out whenever you want; in this house, you are the most important," Jiangcheng quickly explained, his tone carrying a hint of helplessness.
I smiled and said nothing more.
At that moment, Lin Jiaojiao also got out of the car. She was wearing a white dress with a light pink knitted cardigan over it, looking pure and lovely.
"Mom," Lin Jiaojiao walked up to me and sweetly called out.
"Mm." I responded lightly, my gaze lingering on her face for a second before I looked away.
"A-Cheng, Jiaojiao, dinner is ready. Let's go in and eat," I said, turning first toward the dining room.
The dining table was filled with a sumptuous array of dishes, all favorites of Jiangcheng and Lin Jiaojiao.
"Jiaojiao, try this. Aunt Wang specially made sweet and sour fish for you today," I said as I picked up a piece of fish and placed it in Lin Jiaojiao's bowl.
"Thank you, Mom," Lin Jiaojiao replied with a smile but did not pick up her chopsticks.
"What's wrong? Don't you like it?" I asked, feigning concern.
"No, it's not that, Mom," Lin Jiaojiao quickly explained. "I just think this fish is too precious, and I..."
"What's precious or not? As long as you like it," I interrupted her. "A-Cheng, you should eat more too."
As I spoke, I picked up another piece of fish and placed it in Jiangcheng's bowl.
Jiangcheng glanced at me, then at Lin Jiaojiao, but ultimately said nothing and quietly continued eating his meal.
"By the way, A-Cheng, I heard you're discussing a cooperation project recently. How's that going?" I casually asked.
"Mm, still in discussion. Everything is going smoothly," Jiangcheng replied briefly, his tone somewhat dismissive.
"That's good to hear." I nodded. "A-Cheng, Mom knows you're busy with work, but you also need to take care of your health and not overwork yourself."
"I understand, Mom," Jiangcheng replied, though his gaze remained fixed on his bowl and chopsticks.
Seeing this, I couldn't help but sigh inwardly; it seemed that Jiangcheng's attitude towards me hadn't changed much after all.
"Mom, the Blue-and-White Porcelain Vase you bought at the auction today is really beautiful," Lin Jiaojiao suddenly spoke up, her tone carrying a hint of envy.
I put down my chopsticks, picked up a napkin to wipe the corner of my mouth, and smiled as I said, "I'm glad you like it. I plan to place that vase in the study, so you can admire it whenever you have some free time."
"Thank you, Mom," Lin Jiaojiao replied with a smile.
"By the way, Jiaojiao, I heard that you have quite a bit of knowledge about antiques. If we have the chance in the future, we can exchange ideas together," I said to Lin Jiaojiao with a meaningful look.
Upon hearing this, Lin Jiaojiao's expression changed slightly but quickly returned to normal. She smiled and said, "Sure! I've loved antiques since I was little; it's just that I haven't had much opportunity to get involved. I hope you'll guide me more in the future."
"Of course," I replied with a smile, though a glint flashed in my eyes.
I knew that Lin Jiaojiao was superficially trying to please me while actually testing me.
However, the more she tried to test me, the more it indicated that she had something to hide.
This game was becoming increasingly interesting.
I raised my wine glass, gently swirling it, and a meaningful smile crept onto my lips.
