Zhong Kui's Diary
What happened?
I was about to step forward when Xiao Qingcheng took the initiative, ignoring A-Jian's bloodied face. She reached out to check his nose while pressing her other hand on his heart. After a moment, Xiao Qingcheng shook her head with a bitter smile and said, "He's dead, there's no saving him!"
Lingfeng raised his hand to call over a security guard maintaining order at the scene. The guard approached with a puzzled expression, holding a white object that turned out to be a bundle wrapped in tissue.
"What’s going on?" The guard's tone was not very friendly.
Lingfeng showed him his identification, and the guard's expression changed immediately. He smiled and said, "Oh, it's Captain Ling. How can I assist you?"
Pointing at A-Jian on the ground, Lingfeng asked in a deep voice, "What happened?"
The guard seemed to have a cold and sniffed hard. "A-Jian was fine just now, then suddenly he started foaming at the mouth and collapsed on the ground covered in blood."
Looking again at A-Jian's face on the ground, I saw that his eyes, nostrils, mouth, and ears were all covered in blood; he looked extremely tragic.
"Did he eat anything?" Lingfeng asked while I scanned the area; there was nothing on the ground.
"Yes, he ate a roasted Sweet Potato. This Sweet Potato here, I wrapped it in tissue," the guard said as he held up the tissue-wrapped object.
At that moment, the sound of police sirens came from behind us as a police car rushed in. Three officers got out of the car and greeted Lingfeng. The leading officer gave an order, and the other two began their procedures at the scene.
"It might be a poisoning incident," Lingfeng said, pointing at the Sweet Potato in the guard's hand. "This is what he ate before he died; this brother preserved it."
The captain took the Sweet Potato and asked the security guard a few questions, mainly about the time, place, and people involved.
"I know this person. Just give me a call with the details. I'm leaving now." Lingfeng handed a cigarette to the captain and then signaled for us to get in the car.
"Ghost Brother? What are you doing here?" As I passed by one of the officers, he looked up at me in surprise.
I turned my head and realized, isn't that Tongtong from across my house?
I had lived in the staff building of the Gear Factory since I was little. Across from me lived a technician named Jia, who had a son named Jia Tong. He was four years younger than me and always liked to follow me around, often coming home with bruises after getting into fights. After I moved out, I didn't see him much anymore. I heard from my dad that he got into police academy and then managed to get a job at the police station. Among the younger generation at Gear Factory, he was considered quite successful. I didn't expect to run into him here.
"Hey, Tongtong, you've joined the criminal police team?" I stopped and greeted him with a smile.
"Yeah, I transferred over last month." Jia Tong still looked the same, with his round face and smiling eyes.
After exchanging a few pleasantries, I waved goodbye.
Once in the car, I asked Lingfeng to take me home first. As for that Human Game website, Cui Gu Yi needed some time to crack it; it was quite complex with all that talk about search engine indexing and backlinks—none of which I understood at all.
Anyway, I described everything I saw on the website and gave her my QQ number, which included Isolated from the World’s QQ number as well. After watching Cui Gu Yi's computer demonstration at Lingfeng's place earlier, I felt a glimmer of hope that she might actually find the mastermind behind it all.
...
When I got home, Yang Zi opened the door for me. The television in the living room was on, tuned to a news channel.
I smiled and said, "As expected from a prestigious family; even watching TV is different."
Yang Zi rolled her eyes and said, "Amateurs watch the excitement, while professionals look for the details. You can learn a lot from the news. Especially during the conference, every word in the meeting summary on TV can reveal so much."
I remained noncommittal; even if she was right, what did it have to do with me? I had never seen a ballot in my life.
Ignoring her, I took a shower. When I came out, Yang Zi had already turned off the TV and was sitting on the sofa in a daze. I poured her a glass of water but didn't know what to say.
"Where's Sister Guo?" After a moment of silence, Yang Zi asked.
After pondering for a bit, I told her about our trip to Moon City. When I finished, I casually asked, "Isn't your Yang Family evenly matched with the Ma Family? How did you get wiped out so quickly?"
Yang Zi's expression darkened, and after hesitating for a moment, she replied, "It wasn't the Ma Family at all; it was Li Feidao."
"Li Feidao?" I almost cursed. Why not Li Tama's flying knife? That would be even more impressive.
"Yes, Li Feidao." Yang Zi didn't seem to be joking.
Seeing her like this surprised me. "You don't mean there really is someone named Li Feidao, do you?"
"Li Feidao isn't just one person." Yang Zi seemed to feel she had said too much and fell silent.
My curiosity was piqued, and I pressed her for more information. Yang Zi remained tight-lipped. Finally, my frustration boiled over, and I bluntly said, "You and Yang Zhou are the only ones from the Moon City Yang Family who escaped. Now that Yang Zhou's fate is unknown, if something happens to you too, this will remain a mystery forever!"
Hearing this, Yang Zi shot me an angry glare. I glared back at her, recalling a saying from the internet: half-finished sentences are the most annoying!
After a while, Yang Zi lowered her gaze and lightly coughed. "Sometimes it's better for you not to know certain things."
I had no words, only a hum to express my dissatisfaction.
Yang Zi's gaze wandered, finally settling on the cup of plain water in front of her. She spoke softly, "In any era, there will be many successful individuals, whether in politics, business, academia, or martial arts. Over time, these individuals accumulate their resources, and through generations of inheritance, families are formed."
I nodded to show my understanding. The Jin Family could be considered a business family, while the Tang Family was a martial arts lineage. The Xiao Family? Perhaps they were a Taoist family.
"It's like rolling a snowball; as it rolls, it grows larger. The development of a family is similar. When a family's influence reaches a certain level, it will attract the attention of relevant authorities. You would understand this without me explaining," Yang Zi glanced at me and seeing my nod, continued, "Some families know how to keep a low profile and control their influence within safe limits, while others become reckless and start meddling in various fields. This is akin to playing with fire. No one can tolerate a monopoly, can they?"
"Yes. Understood!"
"Li Feidao consists of a group of people who used to be called the Imperial Guards. They monitor all the major families closely and collect evidence of their crimes. No family can guarantee its innocence; when this evidence accumulates to a certain extent, enough to bring down a family, they will file it away. Then it depends on whether you behave yourself or not. If you do, everyone can coexist peacefully; if not, that evidence becomes the Sword of Damocles hanging over your head."
Yang Zi's words were quiet but struck me like thunder. I realized that what I previously knew was trivial compared to this; this was real insider information. There’s a saying: 'Those who know don’t speak; those who speak don’t know.'
"Is the person chasing you one of Li Feidao?"
"Yes." Yang Zi affirmed and continued, "Every major family knows about Li Feidao's existence and is aware of the Sword of Damocles hanging over them. Each family lives in constant fear that the sword might fall. Our Moon City Yang Family has faced disaster precisely because our development has been too rapid in recent years."
I remained silent; I had no right to speak on such matters of this level. After a moment, I cleared my throat and asked, "What are your plans moving forward?"
"We'll take it step by step. Since Li Feidao already knows my whereabouts, it's likely that experts will come after me soon," Yang Zi said as her gaze began to wander again, devoid of any fighting spirit.
"More experts? When did so many experts appear?" I scoffed.
I'm not bragging; in terms of martial arts alone, I consider myself an expert. Kong Xuan could also be classified as one. People like us are definitely among the top in Star City and likely within the top fifty nationwide. Based on Yang Zi's martial prowess, she could also rank among the top hundred in the country. For Li Feidao to kill me and Yang Zi would require at least three experts like him. If they were using weapons, they would need at least five such experts. Experts aren't something you can just copy and paste; where would he find so many?
Yang Zi looked at me skeptically and said urgently, "Don't doubt it. Li Feidao is divided into Eagle Group, Wolf Group, and Dragon Group. Eagle Group is responsible for intelligence, Wolf Group handles tracking and positioning, and Dragon Group is in charge of sniping and combat. From what I know, there are at least ten experts in Dragon Group like me."
I gasped in surprise. Where did they recruit so many experts? Aren't experts supposed to have principles? For example, I wouldn't be swayed by a hundred thousand! Absolutely not! Ten million? Damn it, is Dragon Group still hiring?
If what Yang Zi said is true, then we are facing a complex situation. Even if I had the ability to communicate, I couldn't confront Li Feidao and his group directly; after all, we stand on different levels unless I were as skilled as Li Feidao himself. But is that even possible?
"Why are they so eager to hunt you down?" I pondered for a moment before asking.
"According to my speculation with Yang Zhou, the first reason is to eliminate us completely before the Yang Family in the capital realizes what's happening, cutting off the roots. The second reason might be that they urgently need something from the Yang Family." Yang Zi glanced at me, his words flickering.
My heart sank as I took out the Book of Life and Death: "Is it this thing?"
Yang Zi was shocked: "How do you have this? What about Yang Zhou?"
Indeed, they had no idea that this item had seven pages and thought I had taken it from Yang Zhou. It seems that the page of the Book of Life and Death, the Kaiyang Scroll, is with Yang Zhou.
