Zhong Kui's Diary
“Knock, knock, knock!” Someone was knocking at the door. Through the peephole, I could see that it was Luo Yun.
I glanced at Guo'er, who called out, “Come in!”
Luo Yun pushed the door open, and immediately the voice of Fatty came from outside, “...with a straight body and a slanted breast, we are upright people, honestly eating our meals, yet we can still get our heads bashed in. Now Ghost Brother has thirteen stitches on his head; how do you account for that...”
As Luo Yun shut the door behind her, Fatty's voice immediately became much quieter. Wow, this soundproofing is really good.
“Zheng Nan, are you feeling better?” Luo Yun quickly walked over to Guo'er and asked timidly. Her eyes contained too many emotions—helplessness, pleading, panic, and confusion. I looked at Guo'er, who reached out to hold Luo Yun's hand and patted her knuckles before looking at me helplessly.
“This has nothing to do with Ma Zhenkai; just call him in,” I sighed and said to Luo Yun.
“Who are you?” Luo Yun's eyes suddenly sparkled with life.
“Well, who told you that you and Guo'er are good friends! Call your man in; I want to have a chat with him!” I was the biggest victim here; if I didn’t pursue this matter, it could easily be swept under the rug.
“Thank you, Zheng Nan. Thank you, Guo'er.” Luo Yun smiled brightly and was about to step forward when Guo'er stopped her and gestured for her to sit down. She then quickly walked to the door and opened it, waving outside.
Unfortunately, Fatty's voice came again from outside: “...that person who ambushed Ghost Brother must be handed over. I’ll first knock a hole in his head, then Kong Xuan will take a turn... Hey, don’t leave! If you leave again, I’ll get angry! I’m really getting angry! Damn it! Kong Xuan, don’t pull me...”
When Ma Zhenkai walked in, he still had that calm demeanor. However, upon closer inspection, his eyes seemed somewhat unnatural. I couldn’t help but laugh; Fatty was originally someone who would stir up trouble endlessly. Moreover, this time he not only had reason on his side but also two powerful backers behind him. The strange things he said would definitely be endless. It was impressive that Ma Zhenkai could maintain such composure; his Kung Fu training was truly exceptional.
Guo'er leaned out the door and whispered a few words to Fatty; only then did he quiet down. Guo'er smiled as she closed the door and pointed to a chair for Ma Zhenkai. “Please sit!”
Ma Zhenkai gave me a deep look but remained silent and still.
I smiled faintly: “If I let this matter go just like that, you’ll definitely have some reservations in your heart. Here’s the thing: I came to Yue City to find two people. One is named Gong Ping'an; I have his photo here. The other person you must know is Yang Zhou from the former Yang Family.”
Ma Zhenkai nodded without any hesitation: “Leave these two people to me; if they’re alive, I’ll find them; if they’re dead, I’ll find their corpses.”
"Also, what about the person who ambushed me? I want to see him." I couldn't help but touch the back of my head, letting out a hiss; damn, it really hurt!
"Zheng Nan, I know you're feeling indignant. I have an unreasonable request!" Ma Zhenkai finally dropped his calm facade, revealing a hint of a bitter smile.
"What request? Just say it!" I replied with a laugh. "I'm not pursuing this matter, partly because Guo'er and Luo Yun are classmates, but another reason is that I think you're someone worth admiring."
Saying this made me feel particularly good. What does it mean to have the upper hand in conversation? This is what it means. 'I think you're someone worth admiring...' Heh, it's like a big thug patting another thug on the shoulder saying, 'Keep it up, I believe in you.'
Refreshing!
The bitterness at the corner of Ma Zhenkai's mouth deepened: "In this line of work, loyalty matters. Since I'm his boss, I should take on what I can. Whatever you plan to do with him, I'll shoulder it." He finished speaking and looked at me resolutely, quite calmly.
Luo Yun's lips trembled as she called out softly, "Mark..."
Ma Zhenkai nodded at Luo Yun: "No need to say more; I've already made up my mind!"
Luo Yun immediately burst into tears, unable to hold back her sobs.
I stared at the two of them in astonishment and after a while said, "What are you two doing? I didn't plan to do anything to him. In this line of work, fighting and killing are normal. I'm just a bit curious about how he rushed out from behind me; isn't there only one door in the private room? And who the hell brings a Glue Stick to a gathering..."
Ma Zhenkai suddenly turned red: "Well..."
"What?"
"It's a bit inconvenient to explain, and you might get angry."
"What’s inconvenient? Come on! I promise I won't be angry; I don't plan to do anything."
"Alright then. That guy saw an Adult Toys store downstairs before dinner, and his wife is really fond of those accessories. He picked out a particularly thick Massage Stick downstairs and came up just in time to see..."
"Get out of my way! I want to kill him..."
...
After three days in the hospital, I was playing cards with Kong Xuan in the ward. Originally, Guo'er was supposed to stay with me, but I insisted she go shopping and see the sea with An Ran and the others. With Aijia Yu by her side, I wasn't worried about her safety at all.
To express his apologies, Ma Zhenkai brought us each a hundred thousand in cash, which made the card games much more enjoyable. Honestly, cash has a much better visual effect than a bank card. At first, we were having a great time, with bills flying around the ward as we played enthusiastically. However, after a couple of rounds, it became boring. First, it was tedious; second, Fatty started cheating, stealing money from our pile whenever he lost, and there was no way to guard against it.
On the third night, Ma Zhenkai brought us some news: they had discovered Yang Zhou's body. It seemed like all his bones had been smashed as if someone had used a hammer on him. His body was left in a trash bin by the roadside, reduced to a pile of flesh, though his skull was still somewhat intact, which allowed for identification.
What was even more shocking was that when the body was sent for forensic examination, no blunt force trauma was found. Instead, numerous fingerprints were discovered all over his body. The forensic experts reached a surprising conclusion: Yang Zhou had been killed by someone who crushed his bones with their fingers, and those fingerprints belonged to Gong Ping'an.
Upon hearing this news, the three of us felt a chill run down our spines. We realized that this Deceptive Spirit had essentially merged with Gong Ping'an. We needed to find it quickly; if it fully merged and gained greater power, it could turn into a ghost! Once it became a ghost, it would possess ghostly abilities like invisibility, making it even harder to capture.
I immediately instructed Ma Zhenkai to send more personnel and also asked Gu Shuchang to intensify their efforts. The Underworld began searching simultaneously. Finally, by the fifth day, we confirmed Gong Ping'an's location; he was holed up on the top floor of an abandoned building in Moon City. This was discovered by a 'Sphere Enthusiast' who liked to observe other people's bathrooms.
Knowing Gong Ping'an's location, I declined Ma Zhenkai's and Gu Shuchang's offers for assistance and called Guo'er to tell her not to come to the ward tonight. After hanging up, I pulled out my IV needle and got out of bed to leave the hospital. With bandages wrapped around my head, I must have looked quite conspicuous walking down the street. I hailed a cab and about ten minutes later, the three of us arrived at the abandoned building.
This abandoned building stood over thirty stories tall; its main structure had been completed but construction halted for some reason. It wasn't due to a broken funding chain; rather there were too many funding chains involved. Each chain represented a developer, and each developer represented a faction vying for control of this building. The reason for its unfinished state was that its prime location attracted attention from various factions competing for ownership—quite an unusual situation.
Just how good was its location? Well, there was a pedestrian bridge below it bustling with people; where there are many people, there are business opportunities—something not only merchants know but beggars do as well. However, to solicit money on that bridge required paying a management fee of ten thousand each month to the gangsters just to stay on the bridge itself; going below the bridge meant entering another beggar's territory where the management fee started at twenty thousand per month.
I digress; because this abandoned building involved multiple factions, it was heavily guarded with high walls prohibiting outsiders from entering. There were eight security guards stationed at its only entrance and exit, belonging to four different factions. Sneaking past these eight guards would be more difficult than getting credit from Health Treatment.
"I'm curious how he got in," I said while gazing at the nearly two-meter-high wall in amazement.
"Aside from the main gate at the security office, all other entrances are sealed off; you can only climb over!" After circling around most of the wall, Kong Xuan found a footprint: "Look here at this footprint."
The footprint was about shoulder height for me; two meters higher and three meters higher there were additional footprints. I estimated that these footprints indeed belonged to someone who had climbed over the wall.
Looking around, even though this was an alley behind the building and due to the Abandoned Building, the alley was filled with ruins, which was in stark contrast to the bustling Capital City in front. Despite this, there were surprisingly four or five people selling fruits at the entrance of the alley, possibly trying to avoid being caught by the city management. They occasionally glanced at the three of us. Come on, if you keep staring at us like that, how are we supposed to climb over the wall?
I discussed it with Fatty. He went outside the alley to find a beggar, whispered a few words, and then pulled out a hundred-dollar bill. The beggar shook his head firmly. Fatty seemed to curse under his breath and pulled out another bill before the beggar reluctantly took the money.
After Fatty returned, we stretched our limbs a bit. Suddenly, the beggar started screaming like a pig being slaughtered and began dancing wildly as if he had gone mad. The attention of those vendors at the entrance of the alley immediately shifted to him. Without saying a word, we each took a running start and swiftly climbed over the wall, jumping down.
"Ouch!" Fatty exclaimed when he landed.
"What happened?" I and Kong Xuan looked over.
"Motherfucker, I stepped on a rock and twisted my ankle," Fatty cursed as he bent down, grimacing while rubbing his ankle.
"How about this? You can stay down here and keep watch for us," I joked. "After all, you're on the ground floor without an elevator; with your weight, it would be tiring to go up!"
"No way, I have to go up. How can I miss such an amazing thing? I have to see for myself this legendary invulnerability!" Fatty gritted his teeth, shook his legs, and his body jiggled like ripples.
"Alright then, let's go!" I felt a warmth in my heart.
