Zhong Kui's Diary
Once the reporter arrived, things started to spiral out of control. The customers naturally knew that the store owner was in trouble, and who wouldn't take advantage of that? They all transformed into successful individuals, claiming to be worth millions. Because of poor mobile signal, they lost a significant amount of business and refused to compensate for those million-dollar losses. But what about this phone... can it be returned?
Initially, the owner thought about ignoring it, but after receiving another phone call, his face turned pale. He loudly announced that all phones could be returned unconditionally. The crowd cheered and rushed to register for returns.
Boss Ma awkwardly approached me: "Brother, is it really necessary to bring up the Secretary of the Municipal Committee? Just now, Secretary Liu called me; the leadership is very concerned... I admit defeat; just tell me what you want."
I maintained a calm expression while feeling surprised inside. Just based on Lingfeng, it was impossible to invoke the Secretary of the Municipal Committee. No matter how impressive Lingfeng was, he was at most a member of the Municipal Standing Committee, while the Secretary of the Municipal Committee in a provincial capital city would definitely also serve as the Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Committee, making him a member of the Provincial Standing Committee. The level difference was evident; it was impossible for a member of the Municipal Standing Committee to command a member of the Provincial Standing Committee. If the Secretary of the Municipal Committee intervened, there were only two possibilities: either Lingfeng's family had spoken up or Lou Wei had found someone to intervene.
In this situation, it was most likely that Lingfeng informed Lou Wei, and Lou Wei took the opportunity to return a favor. Afterward, when I called to inquire, it turned out to be true.
I chuckled lightly: "If you had done this earlier, we wouldn't have had any issues. I'm fine now; you can handle the aftermath yourself. I'm going to get a new phone."
"But I'm also a victim! I'm just a distributor!" Boss Ma protested behind me. "The issue lies with Orange's headquarters and our local operators; Mobile and Unicom are responsible for the phones. If both sides start blaming each other, I can't afford to offend either."
Hearing this made me furious: "So you're planning to hold us hostage, huh?"
"I wouldn't dare!" Boss Ma quickly clasped his fists in apology. "I'm just venting my frustrations."
Hmph, what nonsense. Fatty and I walked towards the counter, where there was already a crowd. Behind us, Boss Ma sighed: "Fortunately, only the Orange 4s has issues; if all Orange phones were problematic, I'd be bankrupt."
Fatty and I removed our SIM cards and deleted various information from our phones before returning them to Mobile Store. With the refund in hand, we headed to another Mobile Store to buy new phones.
Clearly, the salesperson at the other Mobile Store was reveling in our misfortune; after all, competitors are often rivals. They were not shy about their sarcasm: "Relying on their brand to do as they please; after all, phones are primarily for communication. No matter how high-end a product is, what's the use if it can't make calls?"
I completely agreed with this salesperson's viewpoint; what good is a phone with poor signal? Is it just for playing games or reading? It seems that this Orange Phone isn't all that great after all.
After turning on the device, a message from the secretary's desk indicated that there was an unanswered call. I quickly dialed back, and amidst the music, a gentle female voice said, "Welcome to Rui Fashion Limited. Please press the extension number directly. For directory assistance, please dial 0."
Rui Fashion Limited, isn't that Tang Zian's company?
I pressed 0, and after a few rings, a woman answered the phone: "Hello, this is Rui Fashion Limited. I am Peng Xin from the Human Resources Department. How may I assist you?"
"Uh, my phone shows that someone called me from this number. I missed the call and am calling back now."
"I see. May I ask which department in our company you have been in contact with?"
"I haven't been in contact... Oh, right! I submitted my resume to your company yesterday."
"Could you please tell me your name and the position you applied for?"
After answering her questions, Peng Xin asked me to hold on for a moment. After a while, she transferred my call to the human resources department.
"Hello, I am Rao Meiying from the Human Resources Department of Rui Fashion Limited. You are Mr. Zhong Zhengnan, correct?" This girl's Mandarin was very standard.
"Yes, that's right. I am Zhong Zhengnan."
"I saw your resume on the talent website and found that your qualifications match our company's opening for a Marketing Department Graphic Designer. Do you have time this afternoon?"
"I do!"
Next, Rao Meiying provided me with the time and location and reminded me to bring relevant works. After hanging up the phone, I stared blankly at Fatty: "Do I need to bring works to apply for the Graphic Designer position? Where on earth am I supposed to find works?"
Fatty also looked surprised and said, "You don't even know this? A portfolio is based on your previous successful cases. What successful cases have you had?"
I replied angrily, "After being with me for so many years, you still don't understand me? Damn it, writing a debt collection note on the wall with a brush doesn't count as a successful case?"
"Tsk tsk, this is a bit troublesome," Fatty frowned.
In the end, I went with Fatty to the nearby mall, grabbed more than ten promotional flyers from various clothing stores, picked out a few that I could understand, stuffed them into my pocket, and hurried to Computer City to buy a USB drive. While I was at Computer City, I also logged onto the internet and downloaded some promotional material images from the mall's app to use as my own work. Just in case they asked why this design looked familiar, I could just say I had designed it.
Isn't that what graphic design is all about?
At noon, I found a place to have lunch near Bond Building. With about two hours left until the scheduled time, I went to an internet café to play some games. Around two forty-five, I arrived at the front desk of Rui Company.
The receptionist heard I was there for an interview and led me into a room, poured me a glass of water, asked for my resume, and then stepped out. After sitting for about three or four minutes, the receptionist brought me to another door and smiled, signaling me to go in.
As I pushed the door open, I entered a conference room where two women were already seated facing the entrance. They were both wearing white blouses and dark gray skirts. One had an oval face with her hair casually draped over her shoulders and a laptop in front of her. The other had an egg-shaped face with her hair tied up in a bun and was holding my resume.
The long-haired woman was already quite beautiful, but the one with the bun was even more stunning and charming. For a moment, I felt a bit dazed—was I entering a clothing company or a beauty company?
When they saw me come in, both women smiled slightly at me. The long-haired woman said with a smile, "Mr. Zhong, please take a seat!"
I smiled back and closed the glass door behind me. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a crumpled piece of paper on the floor.
Damn it, are they really trying to play this old trick on me? Throwing a crumpled paper on the floor and then observing whether the interviewee would pick it up... Please! Picking up that paper would just show that I have civic sense? A sense of belonging?
To hell with that; I'm not falling for it. I casually kicked the paper under the conference table and then walked over to sit down across from the two women, smiling at them nonchalantly.
Seeing me kick the paper ball into the conference table, both women were momentarily stunned, and then the long-haired woman smiled and said, "Mr. Zhong, hello. I am Rao Meiying, the Human Resources Department's personnel manager. This is Ms. Xiao Lin, the Director of the Marketing Brand Department."
"Hello, Ms. Xiao, hello, Manager Rao." After greeting them respectively, I put away my smile and sat up straight, maintaining a serious demeanor. I needed to be more serious; I couldn't afford to be casual anymore since this was an interview.
"I'd like to know why you chose to kick that paper ball away instead of picking it up and throwing it in the trash can," Xiao Lin asked with a smile.
"Uh..." I cleared my throat. "It's like this: as a designer, sometimes you have to break free from constraints and not stick to conventions. If I bent down to pick up that paper ball or ignored it altogether, how would that be any different from an ordinary person?"
"Well, I can accept that reasoning. However, the paper ball ended up at my feet!" Xiao Lin said without any displeasure on her face, still smiling.
"Uh..." I was taken aback for a moment, my mind racing. I forced a laugh and said, "Well, as I mentioned earlier, designers emphasize breaking the rules. Kicking the paper ball to you can test your attitude; if you can tolerate it, then..."
"Then it means I'm easy to bully?" Xiao Lin interjected with a smile.
"Uh, no, it means you can... be accommodating towards your subordinates." I hesitated for a moment before coming up with the word "accommodating."
"Are you sure that's what you meant?" Xiao Lin asked with a grin.
"Alright, it was just a casual kick; it landing at your feet was an accident!" I rubbed my nose unconsciously.
"Let's get to the main topic. Please introduce yourself," the long-haired woman said with a smile.
Finally recalling some tips about interviews from Baidu last night, I knew what to do at this moment. I cleared my throat lightly and said, "My experience in this field is all in my resume; I just want to emphasize one point: I have strong hands-on skills and excel at connecting with clients."
I wasn't lying; during my previous job in debt collection, I indeed had strong hands-on skills and often left those who owed money with bruises.
However, for the two women across from me, the atmosphere changed. Yes, this guy is good at charming clients and has a knack for arranging things in the supermarket.
The two women exchanged glances and asked me about ten questions, mostly about why I left my previous company and my views on overtime. I answered each one. Finally, Xiao Lin smiled and asked, "Do you have any work you can show us?"
I stood up and handed her my USB drive. Xiao Lin took the USB and passed it to Rao Meiying to plug into her laptop. They watched for a while, and then Rao Meiying took out the USB and returned it to me. "If possible, when can you start?"
"Anytime!" I replied with a smile.
At this point, I understood that the interview was over. What followed would be waiting for the results; those who were told to wait for notifications usually had no chance. Since Rao Meiying asked me this, it clearly indicated that I had a good chance.
Sure enough, Xiao Lin nodded at Rao Meiying, who then smiled and said, "Then come to the company to report for duty. I will give you a note shortly that will remind you of what you need to prepare for your report, which is just some photocopies of your ID, a health check form, bank card, and so on. Since it's not very cold now, remember to wear black trousers and a white shirt!"
"Uh, you haven't discussed my salary yet?" I asked in surprise.
"No need to discuss; just go with the expected monthly salary on your resume!" Rao Meiying smiled.
"If I had known earlier, I would have written two thousand more!" I immediately regretted it.
Xiao Lin and Rao Meiying both smiled gently and stood up to shake my hand. "Welcome to Rui!"
