Zhong Kui's Diary
Seeing Zhao Bingbing's big eyes looking at me, I came back to my senses, smiled, and extinguished the cigarette butt: "Perhaps this man is just your relative coming to see you for something; perhaps he is your makeup artist helping you with your makeup; or maybe he is your agent coming to discuss a contract... There are countless reasons, why should I get tangled up in these matters?"
"Well, you said so much, but only the last part is somewhat credible. That's right, my makeup artist just went out," Zhao Bingbing smiled sweetly, instantly filling the room with a floral fragrance.
I chuckled, "Then I apologize, I spoke carelessly."
"You don't need to feel embarrassed. This was just a test I designed to see what kind of attitude my partner has towards my future career. If there is too much suspicion, then there is no possibility between us. Congratulations, you passed my test," Zhao Bingbing said with a smile.
Damn, another test. I couldn't help but feel a bit annoyed, but then I thought about it. For someone like Zhao Bingbing, her partner really shouldn't be overly suspicious. Her testing was not unreasonable.
Thinking of this, I smiled and said, "Honestly, when Teacher Huang first informed me that I would meet you, I couldn't believe it. Why would you choose me? Although I'm somewhat satisfied with my own qualities, I never thought those qualities would truly impress you."
Hearing my question, Zhao Bingbing gradually withdrew her smile and pondered for a while before slowly speaking in the Star City dialect: "I'm from Star City. I only feel relaxed when speaking in Star City dialect; I don't have to be wary of the other person. So, the other person must be from Star City; this point is particularly important."
"Okay." I nodded.
"I graduated from Star City University. Although Teacher Zhou Wen never taught me directly, his elegant reputation precedes him. A son raised by such a father must also be refined; at the very least, he wouldn't go out fighting."
Zhao Bingbing's words made my face flush with embarrassment. Not fighting? Zhou Lei doesn't fight! As for me, I've been fighting since childhood!
I cleared my throat: "Sometimes men have to fight to defend their dignity. Of course, that does not include hitting their wives."
Zhao Bingbing looked at me in surprise: "Have you ever fought?"
I nodded: "Two or three times." I silently added a time frame—every month.
Zhao Bingbing gazed at me with flickering eyes, a smile gradually appearing on her lips as she shook her head: "I don't believe you; you definitely haven't fought!"
I was somewhat astonished: "Why do you say that? Can you tell just by looking at me whether I've fought or not?"
"People who like to fight are usually hot-blooded, but you don't seem like one!" Zhao Bingbing's smile gradually spread, and a shallow dimple began to appear.
"Are you saying that you and I aren't hot-blooded enough? Do you know how insulting that is to a man?" I replied, displeased.
"I just think you're good at controlling yourself." Zhao Bingbing's smile finally blossomed, and at that moment, everything around me seemed to be in vibrant colors.
It felt like a bunch of idioms were fighting in my mind: 'National Beauty and Heavenly Fragrance' kicked 'Sinking Fish and Falling Geese' aside, while 'Moon-Covering Flower' tightly embraced it. Meanwhile, 'As Beautiful as a Flower' and 'Flower-Like Beauty' rushed in one after another, creating chaos... Eventually, all those idioms vanished, leaving only six words in my mind—'So damn beautiful,' and then there was an 'Ah...'
"Hey! I just complimented you, and now you're dumbfounded?" Zhao Bingbing said with mock annoyance when she saw me staring blankly.
"No, no," I scratched my head. "Why do you think I'm good at controlling myself?"
"Because you've been hit by my Love Potion, yet you can still hold back and not make a move on me," Zhao Bingbing said with a hint of mischief and cunning in her eyes.
Damn it, I suddenly realized why I was feeling so easily moved... uh, emotionally stirred. It turned out I had been hit by a Love Potion; just hearing the name sounded like an aphrodisiac. Wait? When did I get hit? As I recalled the faint fragrance from that female bodyguard, I couldn't help but chuckle coldly. "Your bodyguard is quite efficient with the poison."
Zhao Bingbing giggled, "Alright, this was all my idea; it has nothing to do with my bodyguard."
"Forget it; I won't hold it against you." Given the situation, I could only act magnanimous. What good would getting angry do? I smiled casually. "Aren't you afraid that if I got hit by some scatter potion, I'd do something to you?"
"Hmph, Sister Sun is right outside. As soon as I call her, she'll come in immediately. Let me tell you, she's quite skilled," Zhao Bingbing laughed.
Skilled? There aren't that many skilled people in this world; I'm the most low-key skilled person there is. Clearing my throat, I asked, "And then what?"
"And then? What do you mean by 'and then'?" Zhao Bingbing looked at me in confusion.
"What do you plan to do after testing me?" I asked in surprise, spreading my hands.
"Next, you'll be my prospective boyfriend," Zhao Bingbing said cheerfully.
"Alright then, let's go eat together tomorrow." I immediately extended the invitation, secretly laughing to myself that after dinner, I'd announce our breakup as her boyfriend.
"This won't do."
"Why not?"
"I still have to go on blind dates with other people." Zhao Bingbing chuckled.
"Other people?" I exclaimed.
"What? You have to meet many people for blind dates, okay?" Zhao Bingbing looked aggrieved.
"Weren't you just saying I was your boyfriend?" I reminded her.
"My backup boyfriend," Zhao Bingbing laughed.
"Fine, take your time choosing. I'm leaving now. Let me know when you've made a decision." I stood up with a cold smile.
"Where are you going?" Zhao Bingbing asked in surprise.
"I have to go on a blind date too; I have a Kindergarten Teacher to meet this afternoon," I said, making it up on the spot.
...
After leaving the Great China Hotel, I called Liu Dan. It was about time; I figured in a couple of hours I could have dinner with Zhao Bingbing and asked if she could apply for Ruby Employee in advance. Liu Dan was initially surprised, seemingly astonished that I could invite Zhao Bingbing to dinner. Then he snapped back to reality, realizing that having proof was essential; taking a photo together during dinner would count as completing the task.
As for the subsequent inappropriate matters with Zhao Bingbing, Liu Dan didn't seem to care: "She's a future superstar; how could she be with someone like you? It's obvious that it wouldn't work out. There's no other possibility, so as long as you get her to dinner, that's mission accomplished."
I called Fatty next to ask about his Fifth Task. Fatty weakly replied that he had to meet a Fifty-Year-Old Aunt who was bringing along a Twenty-something girl for a blind date. He thought the girl would be his date, but it turned out the main character was actually the aunt. What frustrated Fatty the most was that the aunt looked down on him because of his old appearance...
I laughed as I hung up the phone, shaking my head in amusement. Fatty actually got dissed by a Fifty-Year-Old Aunt—what a story! This teaches us that sooner or later we need Dabao and cucumber masks...
I waited for a while but didn't receive a call from Zhao Bingbing; instead, Lingfeng called me.
"Zheng Nan, how's the progress on your side?" After some small talk, Lingfeng asked.
"Almost there. As long as I have dinner with Zhao Bingbing, President Wang will award me the Ruby Medal. At that point, I can directly subdue him. Once I capture him, we can take down the entire Matchmaker gang," I said with a smile, emphasizing Zhao Bingbing's name. Hey, did you hear that? The future superstar is having dinner with me; you should be envious.
Unexpectedly, Lingfeng didn't seem to care about that at all and instead said in a low voice, "A woman's body was found in the outskirts of River District yesterday."
Lingfeng suddenly changed the topic to this matter, which left me a bit taken aback. After a moment of silence, I asked, "What does this have to do with me?"
"This woman had been sexually assaulted before her death. The killer's methods were extremely violent and bloody; the lower half of the victim was a mangled mess," Lingfeng cursed under his breath before continuing, "The deceased is named Li Yingying."
"Li Yingying?" I was even more confused. "I don't know anyone by that name. What does it have to do with me?"
"It has nothing to do with you, but it does concern Fatty," Lingfeng replied.
"Are you suggesting that Fatty raped her and then dumped her body in the outskirts?" I frowned.
"Where did you get that idea? I just wanted to tell you that Li Yingying is a senior member of Century Lily. Before her incident, she went on a blind date with Fatty," Lingfeng explained.
"That's just a coincidence," I scratched my head.
"A coincidence for one person, but not when it involves two," Lingfeng said with a bitter smile.
"Two people? What do you mean?" I shouted.
"This morning, another woman's body was found at the top of Qingxiu Park. Her name is Luo Feng; she had also been violently assaulted. And guess what? Luo Feng is also a senior member of Century Lily, and her date before the incident was also Fatty," Lingfeng said solemnly.
"Damn, is there anyone else?" I asked anxiously.
"Nope," Lingfeng replied with a wry smile. "These two murder cases are already serious enough. If another one comes up, the Provincial Department will set up a special task force. At that point, even I as the Police Chief won't be able to handle it."
"I'll ask Fatty!" I quickly hung up the phone and pondered for a while before calling Fatty over to my house. Damn it, Fatty hasn't had an outlet for his emotions lately; in his impulsive state, he might end up causing some trouble.
About forty minutes later, Fatty came in holding a large watermelon. He found a fruit knife, cut it in half, and sliced it into several pieces, inviting me to join him.
I bit into two pieces of watermelon and casually asked, "Fatty, when is An Ran's due date?"
"Mid-September, about twenty days from now," Fatty replied as he put the remaining watermelon in the fridge. "Why are you asking this?"
"Well, you must be feeling pretty stressed during this time, right? Have you gone for any health treatment?" I tossed a cigarette to Fatty, lit one for myself, and exhaled a puff of smoke, appearing quite nonchalant.
"You know I’m broke right now; my membership card has been confiscated. Where would I get the money for health treatment?" Fatty said with a long face. "I think the Emperor Club made a huge mistake by not allowing credit!"
"Haha!" I couldn't help but laugh. "So how have you been solving your problems? By... you know?"
"How could that be possible? I have so many blind dates lined up!" Fatty chuckled.
At his words, I felt a chill run down my spine. No way, he couldn't possibly be serious about those things, could he?
