Zhong Kui's Diary
Seeing Wei Zijuan's attitude, I realized that mere sweet words would not persuade her to cooperate with us. I decided to cut to the chase and recounted the incident of the six women who had been brutally murdered.
Wei Zijuan initially scoffed, but upon hearing the details, her face turned pale, and she was stunned for a while before stammering, "You mean, all those who had relations with that Fatty were murdered?"
I nodded.
Wei Zijuan immediately became agitated, turning to point at Fatty and shouting, "You beast! While courting me, you were having relations with so many other women! What do you think we are? Sisters?"
Fatty and I exchanged glances, both seeing a hint of helplessness in each other's eyes. Damn, what time is it, and you're still concerned about this?
Clearing my throat, I said, "Sister..."
"Who are you calling sister? You must not be a good person if you're with this beast. I'll fight you!" Wei Zijuan shouted as she charged at me with punches and kicks.
I grabbed her wrist and retaliated with a slap across her face. The sound echoed as Wei Zijuan froze, covering her cheek and remaining silent.
Feeling a pang of guilt in my heart, I sternly said, "Motherfucker, those six women were violently assaulted before they were killed. Do you want to end up like them? If you want to live, cooperate and tell us everything you know."
After a moment of shock, Wei Zijuan finally asked, "What do you want to know?"
Her question caught me off guard. Right, what was I supposed to ask her? Rubbing my scalp and clearing my throat, I asked, "Did anything unusual happen after you had relations with Fatty?"
"No. When I got home, I took a shower and kept washing myself. I wanted to get rid of all the dirt he left on me," Wei Zijuan glared fiercely at Fatty.
I was puzzled. If she hated Fatty so much, why did she have relations with him? I blurted out this question.
"I wanted that bitch to know that I'm not unwanted; my body is still desirable!" Wei Zijuan screamed in despair upon hearing my question.
Fatty and I exchanged another glance; it seemed there was more to this story. Pulling out a pack of tissues, I comforted Wei Zijuan and eventually learned the truth amidst her sobs.
Wei Zijuan has a boyfriend who is quite unfaithful, breaking up with her every few weeks to be with other women. After a short time, he always returns to her, claiming that she is still the best for him. This has happened twelve times in just two years.
Hearing this, I couldn't help but do the math. Damn, that's almost a breakup every two months! Doesn't he get tired of saying that she's the best? And doesn't she get tired of hearing it?
It seems her boyfriend has taken advantage of Wei Zijuan, constantly being unfaithful and then coming back. However, this time, Wei Zijuan finally exploded. In a fit of anger, she signed up for a premium membership on Century Lily Network, and her first blind date was with Fatty. Unfortunately, Fatty had already tasted sweetness with other women and sent her an invitation to "give it a try." At that moment, Wei Zijuan was burning with anger and agreed without thinking. After Fatty's trial, Wei Zijuan finally came to her senses and rushed home to wash herself clean, believing that this experience could be washed away.
After listening to Wei Zijuan's story, I didn't know what else to say. I asked if she had encountered any unusual situations lately, but she said she hadn't gone out at all and had been home without any incidents.
Could it be that staying home helped her avoid trouble? I was confused and realized I couldn't ask anything more from Wei Zijuan. In the end, I advised her to stay at the police station.
Once outside, I sat down in Lingfeng's office and briefed him on the situation. Lingfeng was also puzzled as to why Wei Zijuan seemed unharmed.
"Fatty, do those seven women you were involved with have anything in common?" I suddenly asked.
"Commonality? They all had relations with me; does that count?" Fatty replied in surprise.
"Uh, I mean do they share any physical traits or personality characteristics?" I explained with difficulty.
"Well, in terms of appearance, they're all above average and have average figures," Fatty recalled with a frown. "As for personality, I'm not really sure since we didn't talk much; we just went straight to the hotel."
Damn, that's so direct! Just as Fatty said, these women must not be looking for anything serious.
Lingfeng flipped through a report on his desk and said slowly, "The latest report is out. Although these six women were victims of violent assaults, what's strange is that there seems to be a pattern. If we arrange them by the time they were attacked, the later victims suffered more severe injuries."
"What do you mean?" I asked, somewhat confused.
"The first victim, Li Yingying, was like a crazed brown bear had ravaged her—she was covered in blood and flesh everywhere, especially her lower body which was horrific. The second victim, Luo Feng, while also bloodied and bruised, fared slightly better. By the time we get to the last victim, Zhang Huihui, she showed almost no signs of injury at all. Moreover, she didn't die on the spot but rather passed away after being taken to the hospital," Lingfeng explained with a frown.
"What did she have that the others didn't?" I asked urgently.
"No, the whole person was delirious, talking about ghosts until the last breath," Lingfeng said with a bitter smile.
I also shook my head with a bitter smile. Ghosts assaulting people? That was too absurd.
Lingfeng lightly coughed and turned to Fatty, saying, "Fatty, you mainly need to recall what differences there are between them. Or, what distinguishes Wei Zijuan from the other six."
"Right, maybe for some reason, she wasn't targeted by that madman," I nodded in agreement.
"What reason could there be? It should be that the madman didn't have the time or opportunity to act," Fatty raised his eyebrows.
"These six victims all had status, usually surrounded by subordinates. Especially one named Yin Tong; she was a departmental-level official, working at the Municipal Committee and living in the Municipal Party Compound. There are armed police stationed at the entrances of those places. Logically, the murderer shouldn't have had a chance, yet something happened, and the first crime scene was right inside the Municipal Party Compound. So your reasoning about lack of opportunity and time shouldn't hold; the murderer must have had other reasons," Lingfeng said solemnly. The murder of Yin Tong in the Municipal Party Compound was extremely serious; now it couldn't be covered up anymore, and they could only do their best to solve the case.
"I'll think about it some more," Fatty said as he lit a cigarette, furrowing his brow in deep thought.
Lingfeng and I didn't disturb him; we each lit a cigarette, and soon the office was filled with smoke.
"Uh, could it be..." Fatty suddenly spoke up but then stopped after just a few words.
"What is it?" I asked with a smile.
"Forget it; that reason is a bit far-fetched," Fatty chuckled.
"Why are you being so coy?" Lingfeng looked at Fatty discontentedly. "There are no outsiders here; whatever nonsense you say doesn't matter. Just treat it like brainstorming."
"Although all seven girls had relations with me, Wei Zijuan felt different. From start to finish, she was passive while those other girls were very proactive," Fatty said, scratching his head with an innocent smile.
"What do you mean?" Lingfeng asked, somewhat confused.
"Do I have to explain it so thoroughly?" Fatty chuckled awkwardly. "Those six girls were all very active in their pursuit; as soon as they entered, they got straight to the point. They even followed a routine: first showering and then pushing me onto the bed—well, you know what happens next. But Wei Zijuan just lay there beneath me like a wooden doll."
"Are you saying that these six women are all desperate?" I laughed.
"Yes, and there's plenty of water, especially that Zhang Huihui, there's an overwhelming amount," Fatty said with a beaming smile, lost in happy memories.
"Damn, that's such a ridiculous reason," I joked, while Lingfeng nodded in agreement, "Fatty, think of some other differences."
Afterward, Fatty considered various differences, comparing height, hairstyle, skin tone, clothing, and even names. The conclusions he reached seemed unreliable. After much deliberation, they still had no breakthroughs. Finally, during a late-night snack, they called Kong Xuan over. He analyzed it from a spellcasting perspective but also made no progress, and they all reluctantly went home.
The next morning, just as I was in a daze from sleep, I received a call from Zhao Bingbing saying she had time to have dinner with me.
"Let's have dinner together then. I'll call you later to confirm the reservation," I said before hanging up. I dozed off for a bit longer before finally getting up, washing up, and calling Fatty to wake him up. We stepped out and casually found a place for breakfast, which instantly perked me up.
After waiting for Fatty to finish his meal at the breakfast shop, we took a taxi to Qifeng Temple to continue yesterday's discussion with Kong Xuan. The three of us analyzed every angle possible until our heads felt like they were going to explode, yet we still couldn't figure anything out.
Forget it; let's wait for news from Lingfeng. It's possible that after some investigation, these six women might share other similarities. It can't just be about their connections with Fatty; perhaps they were classmates who mocked someone together or something along those lines.
As for the three of us, out of boredom, we started playing cards without a care in the world. Whenever we got thirsty, we drank tea; when we got hungry, we ordered takeout. A lot of our time was spent just like that.
