Zhong Kui's Diary
Seeing us in silence, Leizu Wu couldn't help but interject, "Ghost Brother, Ling Ju, why not just put this phone in the safe?"
I shook my head, "That won't work. You heard him earlier; he wants to use this phone to contact me. If he can't reach me, he'll detonate the bomb."
"How about removing the SIM card and putting it in another phone?" Leizu Wu continued to suggest.
"The weirdness might be in the SIM card," Kong Xuan frowned and said. "There's a type of phone bug that implants a walkie-talkie chip on your SIM card. Whatever you have here can be received over there."
After hearing Kong Xuan, I quickly called Fatty. Ever since using a bug during the Jin Family Incident, he had been obsessed with the surveillance industry for quite some time and claimed to be a self-taught leader in the field of eavesdropping.
Fatty answered and immediately asked, "How much battery does that phone have right now?"
"What do you mean?" I was a bit surprised. "Isn't there just one battery in the phone?"
Fatty chuckled on the other end, "I mean, how much power is left in the battery?"
I frowned and thought about it; I had no idea. Who pays attention to how many bars are left unless the phone warns of low battery? I asked Leizu Wu to open the safe, take out the phone, check it quickly, and then put it back: "There's still more than half of the battery left."
"This phone can't possibly have a bug!" Fatty concluded decisively.
"How can you be so sure?" I was curious.
"Eavesdropping consumes power. The farther away you are, the more power it uses; the longer you listen, the more power it drains. You've been using this phone for two or three hours, and it still has more than half of its battery left—how is that possible?" Fatty argued confidently. "I think Mr. Qian really doesn't need to eavesdrop on your conversations; however, it's quite possible that there's a tracker inside the phone."
That seemed reasonable. I hung up and shared Fatty's analysis with Kong Xuan. Kong Xuan nodded, "Fatty's reasoning makes sense, but after all, he's a self-taught amateur without any authority. We should find a scientific method to test it."
I raised an eyebrow, "What testing method do you know?"
"It's simple; we can just use a 60 Security Guard app," Kong Xuan smiled.
It makes sense that Leizu Wu opened the safe again, took out the phone, downloaded a mobile security app, and ran a scan. Just as Fatty said, there were no monitoring software running on the phone.
I breathed a sigh of relief. As for the possibility of a tracker being installed on the phone, we didn't care as long as it wasn't being monitored.
Nevertheless, after leaving Leizu Wu's house, we went to the Electronic Market to have a real expert recheck the phone to confirm that there was no monitoring software before we truly felt at ease. The expert opened the battery cover and found a grain-sized tracker. He asked if I wanted to remove it. After thinking it over, I decided to leave it inside; removing it would surely alert anyone watching.
After resting for a night, early the next morning, we headed to Sky Building to see if we could find any clues from Huang Jianguo.
Upon reaching the entrance of Sky Building, the security guard on duty was Captain Li Hanxuan, the one whose leg I had broken last time but was later healed by Fortune God.
Seeing me, Li Hanxuan's face showed a hint of displeasure. "Who are you looking for?"
"I'm looking for your boss, Huang Jianguo!" I replied with a smile.
"Do you have an appointment?" Li Hanxuan blurted out instinctively. Kong Xuan snorted coldly, prompting Li Hanxuan to quickly add, "I'll contact my boss right away."
"Old Li, let them come up," came Huang Jianguo's voice from the intercom. It was no surprise that Li Hanxuan had an advanced communication tool, so Huang Jianguo knowing we had arrived was expected.
The elevator took us to the 85th floor, and then we walked up the stairs to the 86th floor. After passing through security at the entrance of the 86th floor, a female clerk led us up to Huang Jianguo's office on the 88th floor.
As soon as we entered, we saw a woman sitting in Huang Jianguo's office, sobbing and wiping her tears. Upon closer inspection, I realized it was Lin Lin. What did it mean that Huang Jianguo knew we were coming yet allowed Lin Lin to cry in his office?
Huang Jianguo welcomed us to sit down and looked at me and Fatty with an expression that seemed both amused and angry. "Zheng Nan, Lingfeng, I'm sorry; Lin has some personal matters with me and can't step away right now. We'll have to meet here in this office. By the way, what brings you two here?"
"Uh, it's like this: my friend contacted me recently. Over the years, he has been involved in some shady dealings and made a fortune. As for what those shady dealings are exactly, neither he nor I asked," I chuckled lightly.
"Shady dealings? It wouldn't be something like theft or robbery, would it?" Huang Jianguo raised an eyebrow. The recent financial crisis at Sky Building had taken a toll on him; his eyes looked somewhat sunken.
"That's an outdated perspective. Among all shady dealings, theft and robbery can only be considered low-income activities," Kong Xuan explained with a smile from the side. "The real money is in health products. A piece of deer antler combined with a turtle can yield ten thousand bottles of deer-turtle wine; ten pounds of flour mixed with some goji berries can produce hundreds of thousands of health supplements; just toss a few lemons into the Swimming Pool and you've got an alkaline health drink for everyone..."
Huang Jianguo hurriedly waved his hand to interrupt Kong Xuan's endless chatter and chuckled, "Director Ling, I understand your point, but let's first listen to Zheng Nan's business."
I laughed heartily, "Anyway, this guy made money, but that money can't be seen in the light. Since it can't be seen, it needs to be laundered, right? What's the best way to launder money now? Of course, it's making movies! Clearly, the box office is only ten million; he can claim the box office revenue is one hundred million or several hundred million. This way, that hidden money can enter his pocket openly. Haha, I might be rambling a bit too much. In short, I want to make money with us. We plan to establish a film and television company specifically for laundering money... uh, I mean to develop our profitable business!"
"And then?" Huang Jianguo looked at me thoughtfully.
"Rent a venue. Why else would I come to you? To ask you to play Emperor Ama?" I pretended to be exasperated and pointed at Huang Jianguo. "We just need to register a company, then rent a floor from you, and find a few planners and photographers; isn't that all set?"
"Alright, alright!" Huang Jianguo immediately smiled and said, "I'll have Old Deng from the investment department talk to you about the specifics." While saying this, he picked up the phone on the table and dialed a number. After a while, the other end picked up and called him 'General Huang.' Huang Jianguo replied with an 'uh-huh,' "Old Deng, come to my office right away."
After hanging up the phone, Huang Jianguo smiled and said, "Just wait; Old Deng will be here soon. We're all familiar faces; I guarantee you the best price."
"However..." I pretended to frown.
"What is it?" Huang Jianguo looked somewhat surprised.
"Lingfeng is the Public Security Bureau Chief; he won't miss any movements in Star City." I sighed, "General Huang, it seems that Sky Building hasn't been very peaceful lately."
"What do you mean by that?" Huang Jianguo's expression grew more puzzled.
"Wasn't Three Good Dining renting office space in your Sky Building?" I sneered inwardly; the prelude was over; now it should go deeper.
"Yes! That's right." Huang Jianguo nodded.
"Recently, Zhou Mu Yang's son was kidnapped and they demanded one million in cash!" After finishing this sentence, I immediately stared into Huang Jianguo's eyes to see what expression would appear on his face.
"Kidnapped?" Huang Jianguo's face changed color. At the same time, Lin Lin, who had been silent beside him, also screamed in panic and unease.
I glanced at Lin Lin in surprise, somewhat confused as to why she was so flustered. After pausing for a moment, I continued asking Huang Jianguo: "Zhang Dingcheng also rented a floor in your Sky Building, right? And Leizu Wu from Emperor Club also rented a floor? Their children have been kidnapped. Just yesterday, Zhang Dingcheng paid one hundred ten thousand in ransom to get his child back. As for Leizu Wu's child, they are still in the hands of the kidnappers who are demanding one hundred twenty thousand in ransom."
Huang Jianguo's expression changed unpredictably. After a while, he licked his lips and said, "Zheng Nan, what do you mean by this?"
A hint of confusion crossed my mind. I was aware of Huang Jianguo's boldness; back then, he could joke around even in front of the dark muzzles of our Special Police guns. But now, without me saying much, he looked flustered, which felt off.
I thought about it but calmly replied, "Haven't you noticed that these three companies have all moved from Sky Building to Ping An Building? Moreover, the ransom demanded by the criminals is exactly the annual rent of these three companies!"
Upon hearing this, Huang Jianguo's eyes flickered as if he was pondering something. After a long pause, he asked me, "What exactly do you want?"
"Right now, others are here. It's your Sky Building that is pressuring those companies that tore up their contracts and moved to Ping An Building. Of course, this originally had nothing to do with me, but since we are planning to lease your floors, some things naturally need to be clarified," I said with a smile.
Huang Jianguo let out a bitter laugh and shifted his gaze to Lin Lin. "You should talk to them."
Kong Xuan and I exchanged glances, both surprised. What did he mean? What could Lin Lin say to us?
"Ghost Brother!" Before Lin Lin could start, she began to sob again.
"Why are you crying?" Huang Jianguo said impatiently. "Can crying solve the problem?"
Lin Lin immediately stopped crying, took a deep breath, and slowly said, "My sister Lin Fei has also been kidnapped. The criminals are asking for five million."
