Zhong Kui's Diary
First, I need to find a phone. Although my phone has been smashed, doesn't Kong Xuan have one?
I pretended to ask Kong Xuan: “Mr. Qian is going to Jigong Mountain Tunnel, do you know how to get there?”
Kong Xuan glanced at me through the rearview mirror, and I quickly blinked twice. Kong Xuan immediately understood and replied, “Not really!”
Upon hearing this, I hurriedly climbed into the passenger seat and fiddled with the navigation device: “Let me help you navigate. Oh, I don't know how to use this navigation device. Never mind, it seems your phone has a map function, right? Hand me your phone.”
After getting Kong Xuan's phone, I immediately switched to camera mode, reached above the camera's blind spot, gestured to Kong Xuan, and pointed at the green belt in the middle, indicating to hit it again. Kong Xuan nodded, and with a sharp screeching sound, the van crashed into the green belt, swaying left and right. Taking advantage of this opportunity, I quickly placed the phone in front of the camera and pressed the recording button. After about two minutes, I signaled Kong Xuan to hit it again. Amidst the violent shaking, I took the phone back from in front of the camera.
Just like that, there was a video in the phone that had the same perspective as the camera. Of course, it couldn't be exactly aligned with the camera's view, which is why I needed Kong Xuan to keep crashing; only in this intense shaking could Mr. Qian not become suspicious.
Next, I pulled up this video and signaled Kong Xuan to go again. Just as I pressed play, Kong Xuan crashed into the green belt once more. I quickly placed the phone in front of the camera and asked Kong Xuan to use his right hand to steady it for me while I made a shushing gesture towards Rayue. I pulled out a dagger and leaned forward to quickly cut the transparent tape binding her.
Ding ding ding! The piercing ringtone of a phone rang out. I cursed under my breath and pressed the speakerphone button before placing it on the seat while continuing to cut through the tape.
“Zhong Zhengnan, what are you doing?” Mr. Qian shouted angrily.
“The car broke down; we probably got a flat tire when we ran a red light earlier. Now Lingfeng can't keep the steering wheel steady at all,” I said innocently while speeding up my actions.
“What nonsense is this? Where are you?” Mr. Qian huffed.
“I’m setting up navigation up front.” Finally cutting all of the transparent tape off Rayue, I held the bomb in my hand and slowly turned around.
“Navigation? What kind of navigation? You’re right in front of a tunnel!” Mr. Qian yelled loudly.
I looked up and indeed saw that there was a tunnel ahead of us with five large characters written above it. The car was moving too fast; I only caught sight of the first character 'Ji', which undoubtedly referred to Jigong Mountain Tunnel.
Just as we entered the tunnel, the bomb in my arms emitted a light beep. I looked down and realized that the bomb's timer had activated, showing only nineteen seconds left on the screen.
My scalp tingled; what was happening? However, there was no time to think about it. The most urgent thing was to throw the bomb out of the window as quickly as possible.
"Damn, what's going on? Why did the Timed Bomb suddenly start its countdown?" I pretended to panic and shouted while pressing the button for the car window. With a buzzing sound, the window began to slowly lower.
"Don't be so surprised. We've worked together so many times; you should know that this timer function is just a gimmick. The real switch is still in my remote," Mr. Qian laughed, then fell silent for a moment, seemingly sensing something was off: "Zhong Zhengnan, get your head in front of the camera, or I'll blow up the bomb right now."
At that moment, the window was already open. I threw the bomb out with all my strength. Seeing this, Kong Xuan also slammed down on the gas pedal, and the van shot forward like an arrow, probably thinking like me that it was best to get as far away from that bomb as possible.
Only then did I breathe a sigh of relief. My mind raced—since I had thrown out the bomb, shouldn't I seize some initiative? With that thought, I told Kong Xuan to move his phone away.
As soon as he moved the phone, I punched the camera, shattering the plastic cover outside it. Grabbing hold of the camera, I yanked it hard and pulled it out, severing the connected data cable in the process.
I expected Mr. Qian to be furious, but instead, he chuckled twice on the phone: "Zheng Nan, no matter what you're up to, I don't care. Hahaha, Zheng Nan, farewell!" With that, Mr. Qian hung up.
What did he mean? Farewell?
At that moment, an explosion sounded behind us. Although it occurred several hundred meters away, it still sent chills down our spines; after all, that bomb had just been attached to Rayue. If it had exploded in the car... well, we didn't want to think about that.
Before I could express my relief, another deafening explosion shook us; this time it was less than a hundred meters behind us. I glanced at the rearview mirror and saw the tunnel collapsing behind us.
Damn! How powerful was this bomb? It actually caused a tunnel collapse hundreds of meters away?
Kong Xuan and I exchanged glances; both our faces turned pale. Kong Xuan cursed and pressed down harder on the gas pedal, practically launching the van forward—who knew if there would be more explosions?
It wasn't until we burst out of the tunnel that Kong Xuan finally stopped the vehicle. The three of us got out of the car with expressions of shock mixed with a bit of relief—especially Kong Xuan and me; we were visibly relieved. Damn! We had once again brushed past death.
The three of us stood on the road in silence. We looked at each other for a while before Kong Xuan finally asked me: "Zheng Nan, what do we do now?"
I pondered for a moment and said, "Have you noticed a problem?"
Kong Xuan frowned and shook his head. "Right now, my mind is full of questions. I don't know which one you're referring to."
"Have you ever seen the movie about Dong Cunrui blowing up the bunker?" I changed the subject.
"What do you mean? At a time like this, you're asking me what movies I've seen?" Kong Xuan suspiciously reached out to touch my forehead. "Are you out of your mind?"
Rayue, hearing Kong Xuan, looked at me with doubt and instinctively moved a little closer to Kong Xuan.
"Damn, you're the one who's crazy!" I couldn't help but laugh and cry at the same time. I waved away Kong Xuan's hand and explained, "I've always been confused. When Dong Cunrui blew up the bunker, why did he have to hold the explosives? Couldn't he just put them on the ground and find a place to hide?"
"If he didn't attach the explosives to the bridge, then the power of the explosion wouldn't be enough to destroy it!" Kong Xuan looked at me disdainfully.
"Exactly. The reason is that the bomb's power wasn't sufficient. Similarly, although Mr. Qian's bomb is several times or even dozens of times more powerful than that homemade bomb back then, the sturdiness of this tunnel is far beyond that bridge from back then. Plus, this tunnel is nearly ten meters high; how could a bomb possibly collapse it?" I expressed my doubts.
Upon hearing this, Kong Xuan furrowed his brows. "Hmm, that does seem a bit unreasonable."
"Do you remember that time in the sewer? I threw a bomb into the sewage, and when it exploded, it actually collapsed the entire sewer. Doesn't that make even less sense?" I licked my somewhat dry lips. "And now it's even more bizarre; no matter how powerful the bomb is, it absolutely shouldn't be able to shake down a tunnel hundreds of meters away."
"So what exactly is going on?" Rayue asked in confusion from the side.
"I'm not really sure," I scratched my head.
Kong Xuan pondered for a while before looking up with a glimmer in his eyes. "The only possibility is that there were already other bombs buried in those two places, and Mr. Qian's bomb was just a decoy to divert attention."
I slowly nodded. "Right, it's possible their original plan was to blow up those two places. But if they just suddenly blew them up, the police would definitely be puzzled. What would be the point of blowing up those two places? This way, the police would analyze the motives behind the explosion. For some reason, they didn't want the police to guess that motive, so they staged these kidnapping cases to divert attention."
"I'm completely lost. Are you saying their main goal was to blow up the tunnel and sewer, while the kidnappings were just a smokescreen?" Rayue looked quite puzzled.
"That's right!" I nodded.
"With such a simple matter, why are you rambling on? Did your language teacher teach you sports? Alright, I won't mock you. Let me ask you, what exactly is their motive?" Rayue frowned.
"Well, I really don't know. I think we should go back to the scene and take a look," I said to Kong Xuan.
Kong Xuan nodded as well, signaling Rayue to get in the car. After driving for a while, we found an opening to turn into the opposite lane. After passing through the reverse tunnel, we found another opening to return to this side of the road.
As soon as we reached the tunnel entrance, I asked Kong Xuan to stop the car. I stared at the tunnel and pondered for a while before slapping my thigh: "I finally understand why Mr. Qian wanted us to drive at 60 miles per hour."
Kong Xuan raised an eyebrow: "Why?"
"When we entered the tunnel, wasn't the bomb just about to activate its timer?" I exclaimed.
"That's right!" Kong Xuan nodded.
"After Mr. Qian saw us enter the tunnel on the camera, he immediately activated the Timed Bomb. If I'm not mistaken, when the van travels at 60 miles per hour for 0 seconds, the explosion of this Timed Bomb will definitely occur at the point of collapse." If there were a mirror in front of me right now, I would surely see the light of wisdom shining in my eyes.
