Zhong Kui's Diary
We all leaned in closer and saw a Green Chip in the ashes of the fire, about the size of a Thumb nail, covered with various circuits that looked very high-tech.
What was strange was that this chip had been burned for so long yet showed no signs of damage. The circuits on it even seemed to have Green Light flowing through them, as if it were alive.
"Let's take a look at it," I said quickly.
Fatty used a stick to push it aside. As I walked over, ready to pick it up with my hand, I suddenly heard Wen Qianqian scream from behind me, "Ghost Brother, don't touch it!"
I was taken aback and turned to look at Wen Qianqian, unsure of what she meant by that. Wen Zhan also looked confused, "What's wrong, Qianqian?"
Wen Qianqian frowned and said, "Ghost Brother, could this chip be the tool that Zhang Qixia used to control those limbs?"
She only said part of her thought, but I guessed the rest—if I touched this chip, I might also be controlled by it, which would be troublesome.
I stood up and pondered for a moment before asking Fatty to arrange the remaining wood around the chip to form a circular platform about the size of a Basin. Then I took out a pickaxe and dug around in the nearby bushes for a while until I unearthed several earthworms. I picked one up and walked over to the Circle, then took out a bottle of Erguotou and poured it onto the wooden Stage, instructing Wen Zhan to get ready with a lighter: "I'm going to drop this worm on the chip. If it mutates, you ignite the wood immediately and burn the worm."
Wen Zhan nodded, took out his lighter, crouched down, and was ready to ignite it at any moment.
To prevent any accidents, Fatty aimed his Shotgun at the Circle, just in case we needed to shoot if burning didn't work.
I released my grip, and the worm fell into the Circle. The moment it touched the chip, its body suddenly glowed with intense Green Light, as if there were a green Light Bulb inside it. The scene was incredibly bizarre, and then the worm began to tremble violently.
"Light it!" I shouted loudly; something felt off, and we needed to act first.
Wen Zhan reached forward and clicked the lighter; with a whoosh, flames erupted instantly. Thankfully, he reacted quickly and retreated just in time; otherwise, he might have suffered burns on his eyebrows or eyelashes.
The worm twisted in the flames, struggling desperately. It occasionally jumped as if trying to escape the fire circle. However, since Fatty had built a platform that was wide at the bottom and narrow at the top, and considering that worms are soft-bodied creatures, its strength wasn't great. After several attempts to jump out, it kept bouncing back against the wooden Stage.
I called everyone to step back a little and took out a bottle of Erguotou, occasionally splashing some on the flames to make them burn brighter.
Soon, the worm was reduced to ashes. In the blazing fire, I could only see the green chip, emitting an eerie glow.
It seemed that, just as Wen Qianqian said, this Green Chip was the tool Zhang Qixia used to control Severed Limbs. I wiped a cold sweat from my brow, relieved that I had experimented with a soft-bodied creature like a worm. If it had been a wild rabbit, chicken, or boar, it could have led to disaster.
Fatty used a stick to find the other two chips in the fire. Looking at these three chips, I felt troubled about how to deal with them. They wouldn't burn; if I buried them somewhere, what if other worms found them and unearthed them? And then if a wild boar happened to pass by, the consequences would be unimaginable.
"Ghost Brother, I estimate that this thing reacts only to meat, just like those Yin-Yang Ancient Coins," Fatty poked at the chip with his stick. "See? The wooden stick is fine."
"Do you have any wooden boxes in your Spatial Bag?" I asked with a smile.
"A wooden box?" Fatty thought carefully and shook his head. "I really don't have one. But it doesn't necessarily have to be a wooden box!"
Then Fatty pulled out a box of condoms. It was clear that these were obtained for free from the community workstation and looked somewhat like rubber gloves. Fatty laughed as he opened one: "This thing is sturdy; it should work for storing them."
Wen Qianqian immediately spat and turned away.
Wen Zhan and I exchanged knowing laughs as we watched Fatty blow up the condom and then carefully place the three Green Chips inside, tying it off tightly. After thinking for a moment, he took out several more condoms and layered them over each other, wrapping one after another until he had four layers. Only then did Fatty hand it to me: "Ghost Brother, here you go."
"Hey, don't you have your Spatial Bag? Why put it with me?" I laughed and scolded him.
"First, your Mustard Seed Pendant has more space. Second, you're the main character; everything will somehow involve you. I have a feeling that Zhang Qixia will definitely have something to do with you," Fatty said seriously.
"Pfft! She's more likely to have something going on with you; her whole family probably does," I joked as I took the three chips and stuffed them into a corner of my Mustard Seed Pendant.
After confirming that there were no more sparks in the fire pit, we left the dirt mound and circled around Wei Family's wooden house, roughly marking out a circle with a fifty-meter radius before everyone began searching within that circle.
Food is essential for people; as long as one is human, they cannot escape the basic needs of eating, drinking, relieving oneself, and sleeping. I could believe that the Wei Family lacks a toilet; in the wilderness, one can simply find a spot to take care of that. However, if there is no kitchen, then that would be hard to accept. I do not think the Wei Family members are demons, nor do I believe they are all savage beasts. They must have a kitchen, and logically, it should be located near their wooden house.
Unfortunately, sometimes logical reasoning does not apply. We searched around the Wei Family's wooden house several times, and there was no kitchen to be found—not even a slightly larger open space—just trees and bushes.
Everyone returned to the dirt clearing, looking at each other in confusion, unsure of what to do next.
After a while, Wen Zhan said, "Ghost Brother, you have experienced so many supernatural events. Is it possible that the Wei Family members are demons?"
"Demon? How do you explain that out of seven members of the Wei Family, six committed suicide by hanging themselves, and one went insane?" Fatty interjected. "I've never heard of ghosts hanging themselves."
"Just because someone hangs themselves doesn't mean it's suicide. Could it not be that someone else strangled them first and then hung them up?" Wen Qianqian immediately supported Wen Zhan.
"Pfft! A demon so powerful could be killed by someone else?" Fatty scoffed.
"Naturally, they could be killed by an even stronger demon," Wen Zhan replied with a smile.
I quickly interrupted their argument: "Before Grandma Song used the Vedic Formation, she had Song Yuqing perform a move called 'Only I Am Supreme.' This move absorbed all cultivators and demons with magical powers. After the chaos caused by the Vedic Formation, there should no longer be anyone with magical powers in this world; thus, it seems unlikely for there to be any demons."
"Ghost Brother, didn't Jin Manyuan release ten Dark Overlords? Aren't they demons?" Wen Qianqian asked with a frown.
"That's right; Dark Overlords are demons. However, they should still be in their dormant phase—like butterflies—they are currently just pupae and have not yet emerged as butterflies," I explained with a smile.
Fatty added with a laugh, "Ghost Brother, your analogy is inappropriate. If they were chickens, they would still just be eggs."
"Let's not digress; let's return to the question of why the Wei Family has no kitchen," Wen Zhan said as he took out cigarettes and handed one each to me and Fatty. "Do they not need to eat?"
"By the way, didn't we see sweet potatoes in the cellar? That indicates they still need food," Wen Qianqian chimed in. It seemed she and Wen Zhan were in sync; just moments ago they were discussing demons, and now both had shifted their stance.
Just as I was about to joke about Wen Qianqian, a vague thought flashed through my mind. I vaguely felt that there was a place we had overlooked. I couldn't help but silently repeat Wen Qianqian's words twice in my mind. Suddenly, it struck me, and I couldn't resist pounding my right fist against the palm of my left hand and exclaimed, "The Cellar! We've been forgetting one place, and that is the Cellar."
"But isn't there only Sweet Potato in the Cellar?" Fatty asked in surprise. Then his brows relaxed, and he exclaimed, "That's right! At that time, I was just about to check the Cellar when Ghost Brother discovered that the phone on the Board Wall was missing. Then there was a commotion, and afterward, I forgot to check the Cellar."
Wen Zhan also nodded, "Yes, yes, yes! Didn't Wei Haibo keep shouting about the golden Cellar? There must be something wrong in this Cellar. Perhaps Zhang Qixia and Early Summer are right inside this Cellar."
Everyone returned to the wooden house. To avoid another sneak attack from that right hand, I took out three Big Iron Pickaxes and handed one each to Fatty and Wen Zhan. The three of us began to dig and pry wildly, quickly demolishing all the Board Walls of the wooden house until only a wooden frame stood in place. This way, our line of sight opened up significantly; no matter which direction that right hand came from, we could react in time.
After sorting everything out, we took a short break. Fatty slung his gun over his back and jumped into the Cellar. After the Board Wall of the wooden house was torn down, the light improved significantly; even with a two-meter-deep Cellar, we could see clearly.
Inside, there weren't many Sweet Potatoes; they were just laid out in a thin layer. Kicking aside the Sweet Potatoes revealed the ground beneath. Fatty vigorously dug a few times with the pickaxe, but all he heard were dull sounds from the earth, seemingly indicating that there were no secret passages below.
"Ghost Brother, there's nothing down here!" Fatty quickly turned over the soil beneath his feet and stood up feeling frustrated.
Could it not be here? I felt a bit frustrated too and was about to call Fatty back up when I heard Wen Zhan say, "Fat Brother, try knocking on the side wall of the Cellar."
Right! The secret passage might not necessarily be beneath our feet; it could also be in the side walls.
Without hesitation, Fatty swung his pickaxe and began smashing against the walls. Soon after, there was a metallic clang as Fatty's pickaxe struck a Metal Plate.
